I think most people that like it, especially those who are new to or only have a casual interest in the mecha genre, like it because it's loud and colorful and straightforward. It's over-the-top robot smashing with the most basic plot possible, and because they don't have to sit through lulls or digest any politics any more complex than "those people did a bad thing", they get out of it the only thing they wanted from it, and thus leave satisfied.

Pretty much any other show that a general audience is made to watch (the Toonami crowd for instance), if there's even one episode without much action, they start screaming WHERE ARE THE ROBOTS.
