My favorite Mech is the Atlas.
He comes from a pseudo-realistic setting.
But he is a fat, giant skeleton man robot with a fuck huge cannon coming out of his stomache and in the lore he is "know to toss smaller mechs like ragdolls", so he fights tacticool and "realistic" mechs by suplexing the FUCK out of them.

What I'll never understand is that there is a whole section of people who play Battletech/Mechwarrior that hates Japanese Mecha or Mecha in general.
I'm a /m/an and I fucking love Battletech for what it is, but several of it's design cues share a Japanese common origin. It's kinda retarded to see them hate on something that kickstarted their favorite game.

I've seen veterans of the game shit over Dougram and Macross designs while praising the Timber Wolf, without realizing they all belong in the same fucking game.

The AT-AT is my favorite western mecha. It's so menacing. It just keeps on trucking no matter what you throw at it. If it wasn't for the tow cable the rebels would've gotten fucked up.

Having the turret mounted on the head is sorta dumb, but it doesn't matter because when you're this armoured you don't need to turn around.

They're pretty much Dougram-level sci-fi.
So yeah, they're just as "unrealistic" as any other mecha.

But at least there's the inherent nice thing about how they handle mechs which is a fun mix of super-robo (a mech with its own personality, heritage and so on) and real-robo (a mech as a simple machine of war) with just how much the individual machines get to be customized and have stories associated with them.
Probably a part of why the whole universe is so popular in the first place.

Its not a gun, its a laser. It works by tilting a laser to aim the shot, to strike down missiles during a faced retreat and discourages the user from making aboutfaced retreats or backups. It suits an aggressive playstyle but a better player who knows how to evade would do better with a lighter machine.
