He was both the main series director and writer, so he had a lot more influence than he would've if he was just the director's seat (mainly because the director takes a backseat to the producer in tv production, according to what Lucas said in the Return of the Jedi commentary)

Yes but film doesn't follow the same rules as tv.

According to Lucas in the RotJ commentary (and if I trust him on anything, it's knowing hollywood's rules), tv runs on the system that the director basically exists to bring about the producer's vision, with the director's own personal style put into the work. In movies that isn't the case, producers are there to make sure the movie gets made. In terms of creative control the director calls the shots.

The comparison dress not male sense. After Eva Anno went on to do what is more comparible to Lucas' career /before/ Star Wars.
