First of all, Hasegawa will get around to it, eventually. There's too many official schemes for the thing floating around for them not to, it's just a matter of time - since Hasegawa only really makes one new Macross kit per year, or thereabouts. They might up the pace a bit with the Macross Modelers thing, but don't expect miracles.

Bandai...might or might not make a transformable VF-171 kit. Basically, they didn't even try making grunt VFs in the 1/72 model kit lineup for Frontier before the project was discontinued; when they eventually did make them for the DX Chogokin toyline, they sold like hotcakes, but at that point the 1/72 kit line was two years dead.

Now, they know people are interested enough in grunt VFs to buy the ridiculously expensive DX toys, therefore they'll probably be even more interested in buying the more reasonably priced 1/72 kits. And as I said for Hasegawa, there's room for more than one release of the 171, because I've spotted I think three separate schemes for it in Delta alone, plus the ones that show up in Frontier and Mac-30.

Also, I think Bandai might test the waters at some point with a VF-25A kit, because that is literally only a color swap of the VF-25G with the gun from the other kits, and the only engineering they'd need to pay for is a new decal sheet with more numbers suitable for grunts.

So Kawamori announced something at Anime Expo?

The toys were marketed with an MSRP of between 14,000 and 20,000 yen depending on which one, with the VF-25 and VF-171 versions being on the cheap end, the VF-27 and YF-29 somewhere in the middle, and the YF-30 and the Renewal Super VF-27 (the only one that retailed with Super parts IIRC, all the others had the super parts sold separately) at 20,000 yen.

The thing is though that they are all limited edition - they only make small-ish batches of around a thousand at a time, and if you miss them then you're stuck buying them second hand at huge markups due to being them collectibles.

Also, make note that there are two versions of the VF-25 and VF-27 toys out there, and at least in the case of the VF-25, the first version isn't worth the asking price. Any asking price, if I've understood the complaints right.

That's the VF-171, IIRC. The original VF-25 toys didn't (just) have quality control issues, they had outright design flaws, like using plastic pegs for load bearing parts. Anymoon.com has a comprehensive review of both versions that point out the differences, and it's quite illuminating. The DX toys really didn't start to become good until the YF-29 toy.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these things, as they're way out of my price range. Being a certified /a/utist and /m/echaphile, I've spent way too much time looking at reviews and shit though...

Tried that before, didn't work very well. After umpteen tries when it just wouldn't recognize the kanji despite a really high rez scan, I decided screw it, I have a slate with a pen and I can damn well write them in by hand. It still takes google a few tries before it recognizes some of the characters, though.

Anyway, the stat blocks are basically all translated at this point, but that was the easy part. The descriptive blurbs will be more difficult, there's a crapload more text... but I'm starting to recognize certain kanji as I go, and I'm basically copy-pasting every kanji I get right into a notepad so I can paste it back instead of having to write it again, which speeds things up a bit

YF means it's a prototype. VF is the designation for mass-produced models.

VF is the general designation of a Variable Fighter model.

Though, it is worth noting that the later generation VFs are no longer UN spacey produced. They are made by PMCs like the SMS and Xaos. The VF-19 was actually nerfed repeatedly, not really because the Earth government was worried about it, but because it was such a handful to fly. And the first-generation production machines were so expensive a lot of buyers went "fuck it, we'll wait", until the VF-19F and S came out. Which were still expensive, but at least flyable by a slightly above average fighter pilot.

The VF-19P is nerfed further still because it's sold to civilian agencies, who don't need the performance.

The thing is though that all versions of the VF-19 still retain the airframe toughness necessary to handle the YF-19's performance - which is part of why they're still expensive even dumbed down - and if you're willing to spend the money, you can bring even the monkey models up to performance rivalling or exceeding the YF-19. And with modern technology such as the Inertial Storage Converter which was still in its infancy during Project Super Nova, you can actually make a VF-19 model that's superior in every way to the YF-19 and still flyable without being Isamu Dyson.

Which is exactly what happens in Macross The Ride, where several of the competitors in the Vanquish races fly updated versions of the VF-19 that were developed by their home fleets, rather than Shinsei's HQ on Earth. Other people take those same technologies and apply them to older airframes, including the VF-11, VF-1, VF-0 and Sv-51 - can't check right now because my lap is full of cat, but IIRC the VF-0 version in M:tR has VF-19 engines...

They're faster, but the first generation VF-19s had way more maneuverability. It was just that the edge of the envelope was kind of razor sharp, one second it's still under control, and the next it's completely out of it, and unless you're Isamu Dyson or Max Jenius with the reflexes of a rattlesnake and instinctive understanding of exactly what to do, you're not getting control back in time to save the plane.

The monkey-models can be modded back to that level of maneuverability by applying improved tech that wasn't available at the time the YF-19 was built - such as the ISC and more advanced computer control that's been developed in the almost 20 years since the YF-19.

The Ride and Frontier's cameo are chronologically last appearance of VF-19 in cannon, so whatever really. And most of late models are specialized anyway, so saying that any one of them is THE definite version is also impossible by definition.
Nothung is especially build for superior maneuverability and it is described as VERY hard to fly, EF/A, Isamu's custom is probably just as finicky, while both planes are pretty much one off builds.

Currently rewatching Frontier. Chaos comes off as absurdly underequipped when compared to SMS. I get that they're supposed to be glorified bodyguards for idols, but at the same time they seem to be handling everything in the sector aside from dedicated planetary defence.

It's also no exaggeration that SMS Skull Squadron has 2-3 SHINIGAMI-level pilots while Delta only has SHINIGAMI.

The organization in general is incredibly incompetent. I'd say the cream of the crop is definitely harvested before promotions can set in and NUNS probably settles for the losers that couldn't cut it in PMCs as far as pilot ->officers goes, and puts the rest on people rising through the ship crewman path. Sorry, not desk jobs, I meant non-combat jobs, like flight instructors, test pilots, etc.
Its not incompetent of NUNS to promote good pilots to those roles.
They need people for those jobs, they have no choice.
The problem is when the need for such people and the wishes of the pilot in question clashes. That's when the pilot jumps to PMCs if he wants to keep flying in combat.

Its worth noting that for both SMS and Chaos, the newbie pilot is trained by his future squadmates.
So ideally a new PMC pilot is able to work with his squadmates pretty quickly since he would most probably be trained in their squad-specific stuff like formations and whatnot as well.

Except the YF-29 was in development before the VF-25 was done with its first production run (test pilots and SMS early hands-on). They were developed simultaneously, not as a patchwork upgrade to the VF-25.

The VF-19ADV is actually a patchwork job. A super high performing patchwork job (unlike the VF-171EX), but one nonetheless.

Macross 7 refused to take part in the YF-24 project anyway, because they said they were pursuing their own next generation fighter based off of the VF-19 instead.

It sounds like it was always the intention to me at least when reading those pages. The element of surpassing initial design appears to come more from things like Alto using the EX-Gear to remote control it or just getting more performance than intended according to it's design specs when flying it.

Regardless though, my point was more that the only YF-29 we really see is a patchwork rush job SMS did based on doing up a VF-25 with loads of new avionics and equipment and it far surpassed the stock model VF-25 and even surpassed a stock model YF-29 because of it from what we can tell. Whether it was the fold quartz or Alto or whatever, it surpassed them regardless.

But Itano doing weird things for the sake of art is nothing new.
