***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Anyone ever feel like there's some kind of oily substance on your kit when you first get it? Airbrush told me they use some kind of spray to help the molds pop out or keep them from sticking. I feel like some of that was on this Hi-Zack I built...

Amazing Binder, Portent Flyer, and the Kurenai weapon set are all readily available on amazon, I'm sure the state of the shelves back in Japan are about the same.
That leaves.. the Lightning backpacks that got reprinted was it last month or the month before? Then there's the powered powereder, in a similar state?
They really didn't leave that much out, as far as I can tell.

I'd suggest a gravity-fed, internal-mix double action airbrush (gravity fed meaning it feeds from a reservoir in the top, which is less prone to feed problems when there's little paint in the reservoir; internal-mix because it gives a more even result; and double action because you can adjust both the pressure and the width of the spray pattern on the fly), and not worry about getting an expensive model until you've learned how to handle the "cheap" version. (Note that a cheap starter kit with an airbrush and compressor runs about $200 US, and the compressor will be terrible. *Good* hardware runs in the $300 US range for the compressor alone, and the same again for the air brush - I suggest changing the compressor before the brush though as even a cheap airbrush with a good compressor is better than an expensive airbrush with a cheap compressor)
>>

I guess this stuff is actually quite expensive

I think I might have to reconsider
>>
>>14434918
Gelgoog and all variants. ESPECIALLY the Gelgoog Marine.
>>
>>14434918
Goog, GM, Command, and Alex are my top picks but they've all been mentioned. They're all good designs that came out just a little too soon before the technology was ready to handle them. I'd prefer releasing updates of old 1/144 MSVs or even bringing in ones that have never had a release before.

Also, if they don't want to risk money on a kit, why not sell a cheap 1 runner conversion kit? It can't be that difficult and you can still jew it for 7-8 bucks. Is it simply because they can't release a full kit of that design at a later point? I'm a huge MSV fan and I'd love if they released, for example, just the torso and backpack for GM Cannon.
>>
>>14435838
You honestly don't need to spend 200$ if you are just starting to airbrush. This is a pretty cheap starter kit that I used when i first started https://www.amazon.com/Master-Airbrush-Multi-purpose-Dual-action-Compressor/dp/B001TO578Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1467421805&sr=8-3&keywords=master+airbrush

Question for my airbrush people.
Most people use a harsher liquid for cleaning their AB like hardware store lacquer thinner. After you use that do you use something else to flush the airbrush to make sure none of that harsh stuff is lingering and interacts with your paint? And if so what do you use, or do you find it to not be a problem?

The only stuff I have from Victory Gundam are three HGUC V2s (currently done up as one Assault, one Buster, and one Assault Buster).

The V2 - even the slightly overscale HGUC version - is hilarious to pose next to some of the other suits I have, as my collection leans towards the larger end of the spectrum. S, Ex-S, all the Unicorns in Destroy mode, Nu, Hi-Nu, Sazabi... all of these 20+ meter suits, and there's this *midget* of a suit that barely reaches crotch height on most of them, and it can wipe the floor with all of them at the same time...
>>
>>14436249

I've never used anything stronger than 96% denatured alcohol (I only use acrylics for airbrushing, and this washes them right off), and at that strength the alcohol left in the airbrush evaporates in seconds.

>>
>>14436828

Unicorn mode is definitely more stable, and less prone to shedding parts. The beam sabers on mine aren't held in place on their pegs by anything, the arm panels (which you connect the shield to...) fall off, and the psychoframe in the knees won't lock into place, so overall the kit is terrible for posing, or at least mine is. In Unicorn mode this doesn't matter as much because the parts in question are hidden or held in place by other parts, but in Destroy mode... argh!

Still keeping mine in Destroy mode though, for basically the same reason you mentioned - it's a bitch to transform and I don't want to do it too much and risk breaking stuff as happened on my VF-25s.

>>
>>14436748

For plain early-mid UC thruster power, check out the Sinanju and Sazabi, as they have thrusters literally out the ass.

00 also has some wild possibilities for combining stuff - stick two Quanta shields on the backpack of the 00, and it'll have twelve sword bits plus the two swords; or you can swap the arms of the 1.5 Gundam for the arms of the Reborns, and have three GN Drives.

Then there's the Voiture Lumiere from the V2 Gundam, or the ludicrously huge boosters on the Ex-S...
>>
>>14437038
I'm thinking of a cheaper kit that has a lot of actual thrusters. I'd like to avoid 00 wankery, and I don't want them to be too big either. Even though they're pricey I think a thunderbolt kit might work for what I'm looking for, especially with those really long thin ones. Although I think those are tanks on some mobile suits?

A cheap compressor of the type you get with the rock bottom starter sets doesn't have a tank, it feeds directly to the airbrush and the only pressure vessel is the hose.

I have one of these, that I got for free from a friend that upgraded, and it sucks rocks, but it's all I've got and all I can afford because disposable income and I are words that don't go together.

>not really an explosion but cheap compressors do fail
I could understand shorts and burning, but explosions seems a bit over the top, especially for small motors like the ones we use for airbrushing.
>>

Not him but is there anything wrong with using a 'shop compressor', it has a water trap and a regulator installed, and I have a secondary water trap on my airbrush just to be sure.
>>
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVP_A7eGYxw
>>
>>14440286

how fine is the adjustment on the regulator

that's the major concern
>>
>>14440306

that's a tank failure though, and at a much higher pressure than a hobby compressor

and the tank was clearly kept outside and rusted
>>
>>14440328
I was able to get it to about 15PSI according to the gauge, if that's the only problem I could just get a more precise regulator if it's ever an issue.
>>
>>14440347

I think you would be ok with most paints then

really "hot" paints (like high solvent content true laquers) such as alclad metals might be tough though because they can go fast and the effect depends a lot on your air control

only difference would be how long it lasts and how noisy it is basically yeah

I have a Paasche D3000R that is great, I have my connections taped and I literally leave it on all the time because the tank just stays topped and it doesn't leak, so I can just start painting any time. I haven't turned it off in probably 5 months. I would never go back to a tankless compressor at this point, there are too many advantages.

No? Look at the Kotobukiya kits. Hell, even Max Factory's own Dougram kits had better color separation than this half-assed effort, and they were even smaller and cheaper to boot.

This does not bode well for their upcoming Pacific Rim kits.
>>
>>14441649

Look at that Dougram kit which is all fucking flat slabs and shit and then look at Chamber. How would you make that kit without a ton of decals? You can't.

Kotobukiya's kits require tons of detail painting and even then they've gotten better because they prepaint things for you while in the past you just had to do it on your own.

You fail to understand how far plamo has come. If you were a military fag you would have to deal with kits that are all one color, and come with nothing, and don't even have pegs. Chamber is a respectable effort considering the design.

Don't have a pic of just the weapon, but my favorite is the GN Sword III.

One thing I love about the design direction of Gundam 00 as a whole, is how everything looks futuristic while still maintaining a believable mechanical and technological look.
I'm not really sure how to articulate this better, but for comparison, most UC designs (to my eyes, at least) look very mechanical and functional, but not exactly futuristic. They look more or less similar to present-day tech.

Hey /gpg/ Been nice and busy working on a lot of stuff, and I just started my RG 00Russer, which is the second in a 3 part little project I'm working on. Now, I've run int a little snag. I lost two of the stickers that make little L-shapes on the knees.

Now, due to my autism, I went out and bought some blue paint to try to redo the L-shapes, since I can't access my other paints, and I think I managed to match it well, but what do you think? Should I paint the other leg, or does the paint not clash with the colors of the stickers? The paint is on the right leg, and not the left, the left is just purely stickers.

It's a bit inconvenient, but the site does update when the release date comes closer, so eventually "Month/Timeframe" becomes "Month/Day." For example, the 1/10 Megaman reprint was listed as "Late December" originally, then as the month went on it was specified as "December 24." It'd still be even nicer if we knew the date at the start of the month like we do with Bandai, but on the other hand they show the previous month's release dates on the same page..
>>
>>14444665

Honestly, even just knowing the timeframe is good enough for me.

You can check the timeframe on amiami too, even though they just have "month" and "month - late".

I'm painting up a Hazel to practice hand-painting an entire model, and I can't decide what to use as my second main colour. For reference the blue/teal is Vallejo's metallic Gunmetal Blue, it's a bit darker than in pic related most of the time. I think the white body looks better, but the prospect of handpainting that much white makes me sad as I only have grey primer on hand. The dark body would probably be Citadel's Dark Reaper.

Thoughts appreciated, especially if you think a different secondary colour would work better.

Oh, and the yellow lines are actually gold.

It seems to me that the color of the L's are very slightly off, but they do match well (and it might be due to lighting. If the color IS off though (you'll have to be the judge of that) simply painting the other L's will fix it as it doesn't seem to clash with the other stickers at all.
>>
Where do I go if Mech9 doesn't have the translated color guide? I have an Origin 78-02 I want to paint and want those tiny subtle differences from say the Revive.
>>
grey or black panel lines for turn x?
>>
>>14445186
Black
>>
>>14445076
Yeah, it's a tad bit lighter than the sticker L's, but I was more concerned with how they seem with the smaller blue stickers, like the cautions and triangles. I can and will do the other L's (since they're pretty easy to mask and do), it's more the smaller ones that I was unsure of. If that's the case, then I won't fuss too much.

>>14445186
I'd go grey, but I say test out how much the black sticks out on the main colors, like on the runners. Like test it out on the part that tells you what runner it is. Usually next to the letter it has some words that stick out, so you could try test panel lining on that? See which ever tickles your fancy, but typically the unanimous answer in these threads is grey.
>>
>>14445060
Yeah, that was this one.

I won't buy it though, I want a collection that show the evolution of the line and the two victory gm are better for that I think.

Now that I think about it, is there a figure of the heavygun? Probably not I guess.

Runners(brace for decals).

It looks really nice and it looks like they give you a choice between waterslides and stickers. Always a plus. I've heard pretty much nothing but positive things about this kit other than the amount of decals, which is not unusual for a design like this.
>>
>>14449178
Thanks again.
>>
>>14449178

Bandai's VF decals (the water ones) tend to be made of suck and lose, and I haven't actually seen any builds that used them yet. All the completed builds I've seen so far have used the stickers, and apparently they're really excellent when properly handled. Which means my fumble fingers really should stay away, but I'm not going to be able to help myself...

At least I have a friend who loves both Macross and painting Warhammer minis to do the pilot figures for me, all he wants in return is to be in on next months order, so he can get his own VF-31 when I buy the VF-31S.
>>
>>14449321

They use the stickers because they are more robust than waterslides, which can shred during the transformations.
>>
>>14449328

Not can. Will. (Has two VF-25 kits with ruined water decals, plus one with no decals at all due to how badly the first two went.)

I'm looking for something that could fit on the MG zeta plus, I know the p-bandai exists with the extra parts but I have the regular release already unbuilt - I was looking at the SD zeta plus with all the parts for all variations including the HHC I'm just wondering if even that would work instead of attempting anything in styrene. I know it's a bit of a stretch with MG to SD head size but any opinions would be great.

This was the second coat. I'm experimenting with these paints trying to find the proper thinning ratio for handpainting. I might have overthinned a bit
>>
How do you check right angles when you scratchbuild small stuff?
(Small stuff, but big enough to notice if the angles are wrong).

But the third coat fixed everything. No brush strokes really. acrysion paint sorta self levels
I can still see the seam line. I used tamiya extra thin cement and couldn't feel the seam line after sanding but now I can still see it. Wondering if primer would've eliminated it.
I'll try putty next time.
>>

>Wondering if primer would've eliminated it.
Maybe not eliminated, but you would have noticed it and fixed it with more sanding and putty.

Also, have you guys ever used gesso to spot the mistakes and seams before painting?

Majority of the top of the fighter mode is decals. Unlike the vf 25, there aren't any sharp edges that will strip the decal in it EXCEPT the one in the knee cap which has a thin part of decal in it.

And someone pls respond to my question.

Three coats of paint thinned and I get a finish thats BARELY thicker than airbrush application. To my eye it looks like the runner has always been red except for where you can obviously see the white.

you're probably right. I've never used primer to check for imperfections but I hear that's the best way to go about it.

Never used gesso but my gf has a tub of it from art school. I'll give it a try one day.

It's good to know I can get decent results from hand painting if I try. I was scared this was gonna be a THIN YOUR PAINTS moment for me.
Obviously I would mask this normally but I wanted to see how steady my hands were. Verdict: I'd better keep an ample stock of masking tape on hand.

Next I want to test hand painting top coat and mixing clear gloss with varying amounts of flat additive to get certain degrees of matte finish.
It probably won't go well.
>>
Are gundam paint markers good for detail painting or should I just hand paint instead?
>>
>>14449683
Pour it into a small container of sorts, then use a detail brush
>>
>>14449692
Shouldn't I just buy paint instead if I'm gonna use a brush anyway?
>>
>>14449705
Well, you can. But the markers are a bit better if you just pour a bit into a small cup/bottom of soda can and just use a detail brush
The marker will put out way too much on it's own.

That was the best I could do with a marker. like the anon said if you put it into a container and use a brush it'll be better. using the marker tip causes more paint to come out than you need and will be thick as hell. This is only one coat its still kinda see through. I'd need to do another coat, maybe 2 to get full coverage but it'll never be even because of all the build up of excess paint.

You're better off buying paint jars and brushes.
>>
>>14449662

Find your local equivalent of "Future Floor Wax" by S.C.Johnson - it's sold under a variety of brand names world wide, and it's pretty much the cheapest shiny clear coat you can get since it comes in half-liter bottles for about what I pay for two small jars of model paint. Pour a small cup of that, and add a few drops of transparent yellow acrylic paint (MR Color or Tamiya, pick your poison), then dunk the clear parts and then set them on a piece of folded tissue. If it turns out bad, dip the canopy in Windex or other ammonia-based window cleaner, and it'll wash right off.

Don't use straight clear yellow unless you want a super ultra yellow canopy...

Also, would it look weird if I only painted a few parts of a kit? Not digging the dark green parts of the graze and would like to paint those a dark grey/black.

Why do I have a feeling that the Formula will be the first and last Xenoblade X kit?

I am tempted, right now, to get a second Formula because I'm looking to convert it into a Lailah.

I'm sure it looks better than this in real life due to the size, but this is the effect you get with "metallic" paints with flakes

Those are flat metallized paints like alclad's gunmetal, but I feel pretty confident that is flat coated alclad dark aluminum. Topcoating it dulls it like that. Either way nothing is going to make the flake go away.

I wonder, why was the Seraphim Gundam so expensive for a while?
It's a little shitter gundam that the Seravee shits out. I saw its prices being close to that of the HGUC Kshatriya at one point.

Shalltear Bloodfallen is also known as Gundam Valkyrie because of her battle form. I was wondering what I'd need to kitbash the skirt armor.

I don't think there's a mobile suit with skirts that long. It'd probably be easier to scratch build it.

It's possible that there will be more if it sells well. For example, Majestic Prince is getting a second model kit so the Red Five must have done decently well. I just hope the Formula doesn't have seam lines up the ass like all of the other Kotobukiya kits I have built

Not sure what the autograph pen contains but I assume any Tamiya top coat will seal it. But it could make it run too, as always spray light coats.

As for the cockpit TS-71 smoke on the inside of the cockpit and TS-13 clear on the outside probably looks good
>>
>>14449662
How does the Hasegawa models handle the color separation? I assume they come Grey. Do they have decals or stencils? I'd love an untransformable VF from Bandai with better color separation in the pieces but I guess that would intrude on Hasegawas license
