There's basically only 2 games in the series + a spin-off.

The order is Mask of Arcadius -> Liberation Day.

Academy is a "school life" spin-off. It kinda sucks even though I like the genre.

The main game is a space opera but the plot is kind of a trainwreck because the writer is a hack.

The good news is that the Tactical battles is actually pretty good because it was done by someone else. It's tough as hell though, so expect your special snowflake mechs to be slapped around by swarm of grunts (which is what /m/ always wanted) - thankfully, the Special Snowflake Nadesico Battleship is at least very strong.

Kayto Shields is a dumb name and I'd take him much more seriously if he were a pretty girl instead of a gorgeous boy

First game is fine, a noble captain and his plucky crew of female love interests and offscreen redshirts fight an entire empire due to his love for his little sister. But mostly you just shoot stuff.

By the 2nd game, everyone was some kind of special snowflake all along, and they take it in turns to give boring dramatic reveals about who is the specialest snowflake? But mostly you just shoot stuff.

The torpedoes were practically a necessity to stem the endless tide of capital ships, but the vanguard cannon was just gratuitous.

Have to say, I much preferred the way you resources were handled in Liberation Day. Money being separate from intel meant you could actually justify buying things instead of making upgrades, and command points working more like a meter you could fill up in combat but with a fairly low cap meant you couldn't just accumulate mountains of points and teleport around firing the vanguard cannon every turn.
