Granted it's an admittedly limited field, but how do you think it stacks up to Exosquad, Megas XLR, Big Guy, and Sym-Bionic Titan?
>>
>>14401128
I don't think Exosquad is unbeatable
>>
>>14401128
On-par. My personal rating would be:

Exosquad > Sym-Bionic Titan > Voltron > Big Guy > Megas XLR.

Not saying any of those shows are bad; quite the contrary I adore all of them. This is just a comparison of them in a vacuum.
>>
It's very okay
>>
>>14401085
Its pretty fucking cool. Worth checking out.
>>
>>14401085
You know what?

The fact that Voltron doesn't appear often and the mech battles are few and far between, this gave the show a lot of opportunities to make the characters and the individual lions shine.

It's like the show is starving you from seeing Big Grumpy Robot and when the combination sequence kicks in, it feels more special since it's not every episode you see this.

And it works! Definitely up there on my Super Robot favorites.

Opening sucks Gravion dick though
>>
>>14401085
It pretty good but it needs to put it the joke to the better place. Sometimes the cast made the joke in the middle of intense action or firefight which were lame.

Keith need to man up and return to his spot at the lead pilot of Voltron. Shiro needed to die etc etc.

The worst part of watching it on Netflix is you know you could be watching Gurren Lagann instead.
>>
>>14401341
or sidonia.
>>
>>14401320
Keith was the weakest link of the show and I think the show would suffer immensily to give him leadership status.

He was the most under developed and one note character of the whole thing. If they worked on him, then maybe. But for what we got? Glad we got Shiro.
>>
>>14401320
> Shiro needed to die etc etc.

Why? He is one of the best thing on the show.
Serious leader, but not too much. Also there is no need to give the princess a lion, her role as a pilot of the ship is more than enough and she has already a lot of time screen.
>>
>>14401144
Even though I agree with your ranking having Megas XLR at the bottom of a list feels so wrong.
>>
>>14402258
Objectively, Megas is the worst. Because where the others kinda try to have a plot and stuff, Megas is 100% comedy, and comedy is anything but objective.
>>
Now that I think about it, this show was pretty mediocre. Its trying so hard to subvert cliches that it doesnt even understand why some of those cliches are standards
>>
>>14401085
It's too early to tell since this season is basically just establishing the setting but it's clear they're going for the long game with Voltron. What's currently out is still pretty decent though..

However I'm really, really disappointed that they didn't use the classic Voltron music when combining. That shit is iconic and is probably the only reason I still think fondly of the old show despite not remembering much else about it.
>>
>>14402258
>>14402267
Basically. As a comedy and a loving send-up of anime and mecha it was great, but even then I thought the comedic timing of the original short was a notch above the actual show.

It's good, to be sure, but compared to the others on the list it just ranks behind them.
>>
>>14402300
I really don't like the mass effect looking sword that has replaced the forked sword of the original. Granted in the vision they have, Voltron has a sword on fire, but I'm not sure if it's the Blazing Sword, or just Keith's mass effect sword on fire.
>>
>>14402349

I dont like how they Mass Effect'd/Ipod' everything mechanical. Its just so clean and bland.
>>
>>14402354
Yes that too. It was very evident.
>>
>>14402354
Don't worry, once Earth rolls out Vehicle Voltron we'll show those xenoscum what proper mecha is about.
>>
>>14401144
Man I miss Sym-bionic Titan
>>
>>14402800
So do I. It started off rough, but it got better, and those last few episodes were really good.
>>
>>14401085
It's extremely decent. And I mean that in every possible context.

It's a slow burn, which allows for a good amount of character development across the team. On the other hand, the writers only develop two characters at a time, and clearly only want to focus on three of them this season. Which is fine, but it's certainly noticeable.

Also, of course, the extreme lack of actual Voltron in the series. Again, not necessarily a bad thing, but it trades the problem of "Why even bother with the individual lions?" for "Why even bother forming Voltron?" I'm certainly grateful for the expanded role of the lions, but it's cancelled out when the fights become less inspired after Voltron shows up.

But aside from that, a few oddly obvious twists, generic art direction on the mecha side of things, and a really terrible OP theme, it's actually quite solid.

I think the main deciding factor would be if you watched the previous series the writers and animation studio worked on: Avatar: The Last Airbender. It might be harder to handle the random bouts of humor and stylistic touches if you're not already familiar with them.
>>
>>14403037
I'm glad they made the lions useful, but most of the lions having only the tail gun, and the mouth gun got boring quick. (They did try to shake it up a little in the later eps at least.)
>>
>>14401426
That is the reason Shiro need to play the role of Kamina and forced Keith to man up, get over his autism and start to earn the trust of other teammates.
>>
>>14401085
I really enjoyed it. It's great.
>>
>>14402354

I wouldn't really mind so much but the castle is supposed to be however many thousands of years old
>>
>>14403100
what? they already trust one another. that storyline is over. the two supposed rival characters can even understand meaningless hand signals between each other. what's with the obsession with killing off Shiro?
>>
>>14403284
>what's with the obsession with killing off Shiro?

10,600. But remember, it's still the product of a highly advanced, if extinct, civilization. The depiction of "advanced" in any given piece of media is heavily dependent on whatever the current technological aesthetic of the society that creates the media is.
>>
>>14405211

> Altean and Galran technology is advanced beyond Human and van do FTL, plasma shielding and even magic
> Pidge and Hunk immediately know it inside out

Possibly my biggest peeve with the show. The tech feels so mundane and unimpressive because of it. Pidge putting the invisible walls tech on the green lion is probably the worst example.
>>
>>14405223

mine was 10K years has pased and Galra is still using the same tech and fashion afterwards. you'd think in 10 K years their tech would have surpassed Voltron and shit.
>>
>>14405223
What annoys me is that Hunk is supposed to be the engineer but it's Pidge that's always shows tech feats.
>>
>>14405420
Hunk is MacGyver. Pidge is the computer nut.
>>
>>14405435

Yea, Hunk has an affinity with mechanical systems, Pidge with electronic. They're both engineers, just of a different type.
>>
About halfway through
>2d animation can look kinda cheap
>opening theme is lame
>Pidge reveal is super obvious (to be fair, the show acknowledges this)
>humor is hit-or-miss
>disappointing lack of Obari sword pose
Other than that, solid 7/10 show and a step in the right direction for western animation.
>>
>>14405237
You could argue Zarkon being in charge for 10,000 years lead to technological stagnation, but it doesn't jibe with what they told us about how the druids were always constantly inventing shit.
>>
>>14405237
>>14405928
Well, it's not like the show ever claimed Voltron was Altean tech. It might be even older and since this is sci-fantasy that means it's even more advanced.

That was a problem I had near the beginning, when they sent in their first monster to capture Voltron.

If that's the case... whats the fucking point of capturing Voltron?
>>
>>14407026
>Not Romi Park as Pidge
>>
>>14407449
Her believing it and Zarkon believing it are two different things, especially since she was wrong. Zarkon having been the former Black Paladin, he knows the current paladins are total scrubs at using Voltron compared to what he knows about how to use it. They can't even change their bayards into more than one form.
>>
>>14407462
No anon, it's supposed to be obvious Pidge isn't a young boy.
>>
>>14407522
But at the third episode we the audience don't have that context.
>>
>>14407546
It still informs the character's actions. Haggar works to capture Voltron because Zarkon told her to, even if she thinks her monsters are better. Zarkon tells Haggar to capture Voltron because he knows exactly how powerful it really is.

If you have seen the entire season it's because in the hands of Zarkon it can be much more powerful. They haven't realized its full power while Zarkon has.

It's especially noticeable in the last episode how much more powerful Voltron is than any individual lion.

>>
>>14410003
>Sven, Matt Holt (Pidge's brother) and Shiro were a team back in the academy
>>
>>14410003

At the moment at least the Galaxy Garrison might as well not exist. They were there purely so that the Humans would have someplace to come from and nothing more. They don't know anything about Voltron, the Galrans appear to have surprised them and then left to follow the Blue Lion and the Galaxy Garrison just kind of disappeared in to a plot black hole. I'm not even sure they ever saw the Blue Lion. They certainly never saw Voltron, and all the action is taking place on the other side of the Galaxy from Earth at present. At most they'll be able to scrounge some Galran tech from the guys who crashed following Keith and co when they rescued Shiro.

I'd love to see them be more relevant, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards. Sadly.
>>
>>14410055
Maybe in season 2? Like why was Keith attracted to the shack?
>>
>>14410064

I presume he was attracted to the energy of the Blue Lion since he was a potential Paladin and while he wasn't perfect for that Lion, he was close enough, both physically and psionically at one point to feel it.
>>
>>14410082
Yeah but even after that he was still thinking about it. So who knows.
>>
>>14410055
Shiro did leave his escape pod back at Earth...
Dunno what you can even glean from a mere escape pod, tho'
>>
>>14410055
They did see the Blue Lion. And let's not forget that the cave where the Blue Lion was hiding has some form of Lion tech/magic. It's not inconceivable that by the time the show shifts back to Earth that they'd have a considerable tech jump.
>>
Why has no one ever questioned whether it was because of Shiro's arm that they keep getting tracked?
>>
>>14410273
Probably haven't twigged yet. Bet it's gonna be brought up early in S2 when they get found after being split up.
>>
>>14410246

What kind of tech was there really? The plasma shielding was that of the Lion, the chute that brought them down was nothing advanced - the only thing it had was detection of a suitable Paladin candidate. We've no reason to even assume the Galaxy Garrison no where the cave is, never mind that they'll be able to dig that tech out or make anything out of what is only detection technology.
>>
>>14410339
Keith left a shack full of notes. And even if the cave had only the most basic technology, it had something that powered those fancy lights for thousands of years. Then again maybe it was the Blue Lion that was powering things.
>>

So if they actually do make a Voltron using that they would make a shit one right?

Which isn't really helpful even if they did find it.

Is there any basis for the Keith=Lotor rumors apart from wishful thinking?
>>
>>14417143

Probably not given that someone helped them at the end of the last episode and it was definitely a Galran, so that's probably Lotor, not Keith.
>>
>>14417189
I can buy that that dude was an agent, doing Lotor's biding, but I doubt he was Lotor himself.

There is however a something clearly off about Keith, with his psychic connection to the lions, ability to read Galran symbols, space autism and general non-descriptness.

The only thing we really know about him is that he's sorta brash and that he used to be an ace student.
There's going to be some kind of reveal about him in the second season.
>>
>>14417229

They all have a psychic connection to the Lions. Allura says it herself in the pilot, the quintessence of the pilot is in the Lions. It's how Zarkon tried to take the Black Lion in the finale, cause he still had a connection to it.

I was thinking today, if this reboot gains enough traction, do you think it might pave the way for Saber Rider? That was a borrowed IP under WEP, as well.

The only thing that's really thrown me so far is the vagueness concerning the scope of the show's universe. They keep saying that Voltron is supposed to protect the UNIVERSE and that Zarkon has taken over the UNIVERSE, and I'm thinking, "Well, a galaxy is bad enough, but yep, they're showing us a map of the UNIVERSE, or at least the local group, with a ton of galaxies in it, and 90% of it is Galra-controlled."

They kind of lampshaded it in a later episode, but the sheer immensity of the job ahead of them is still being downplayed. Even in a best-case scenario where Voltron's victories snowball and the people it frees go out and free other people, "defeating the Galra Emprie" is not a 10 year mission. It's not a 20 year mission. It's not a lifetime mission. It's a, "You do what you can during the next 30-50 years, die, and pass along Voltron to the next crew. And they do the same thing. And so do the next guys. And it just goes on like that, all Infinity Blade-like, for thousands and thousands of years," mission. Assuming that they never lose a lion, of course.

I'm sure there'll be some sort of twist later on that nullifies the need for all that (and, really, I'm overthinking it), but that seems to be the situation.

I think that's sort of how it was in the original Voltron too though
>>
I'm hoping for Dairugger XV Voltron to show up too eventually. And maybe even Albegas!

No reason why we can't share.

>Guys, seriously, they're super deep
Nah. I think you guys are underestimating how good Megas was, too.
>>
>>14417551
Was it? I honestly don't even remember. I just assumed that they were fighting a fleet that was threatening a few planets and that was it.
>>
>>14417267

Yeah but he was the first one to develop a connection to the Blue Lion, even though he didn't wind up as its pilot.

I think the more suspicious part of his character is the fact that he can use Galran tech on his own though.
>>
>>14417570
I didn't even say that. I'm saying Big Guy and Rusty is part of the handful of underrated American mecha series, along with Megas, Sym-Bionic Titan and ExoSquad.

>>14417576
>Keith us part Galran and Lotor will eventually be introduced as his half-brother

Oh lord please no.
>>
>>14417143
>Is there any basis for the Keith=Lotor rumors apart from wishful thinking?

Keith is the only one who has been able to get the Galra handprint thing to work without dismembering robots or having a cybernetic hand.

I actually didn't catch that was something suspicious until someone pointed it out in the talkback thread and then I was kicking myself for not realizing it earlier.

So, Trump?
>>
Not sure how to feel about it so far. The humor isn't really my style but it has some good lines once in a while. It just seems forced into too many scenes. The action is pretty good, nothing great but enough to hold my interest. The story is fairly standard so far, music is nothing special. The characters are likable enough when you get past the bad jokes which is the post important part, so no complaints there. Overall it just seems like I'm a little older than the intended audience but the spirit is there and I can really appreciate it. I wouldn't call it great but it has more good than bad.

>not Pidge

>>14417829
Regardless of anyone's opinions, he's not even a politician yet, how the fuck would you know if he'll be ineffectual or not?
>>
>>14417798
Source?

I don't know why I'm morbidly curious of Japan's reception to Grumptron
>>
>>14417798

More like they all want Keith to fuck Shiro if the fanart I've seen is any indication.

Anon's probably talking about when he closed the hanger doors on the Balmera without having to use a Galran or robot hand
>>
>>14419232
Well it was a hand shaped symbol. Saying that he can read is a bit of a stretch. Though the theory that he's part alien probably isn't so far fetched. Earth was clearly in the Altean database and someone has to have built the Blue Lion's hiding spot so it's definitely been visited before.
>>
> Albegas was to be known as Gladiator Voltron
> The Galra use Gladiator matches as entertainment and the Witches pull people to experiment on from them
> Zarkon builds Gladiator Voltron as his final method of attacking Volton, to try and use mew Galran tech and magic to overwhelm it
> Zarkon, Haggar and someone else pilot it
> Alternately Lotor and two other Galrans build and pilot it
> Alternately three good Galrans take it or build it along with piloting it once the Galrans are defeated and become second Voltron
> Earth makes Vehicle Voltron to become the third or something
> And I get annoyed at the level of tech humans understand and cam use in the show all over again to say they can make a mech nearly as good as either Voltron despite having no magic, no FTL etc and only recently being exposed to them
>>
>>14419770
If anything, they could pull the "time dilation" card at some point, due to something going wrong.
>>
>>14419169
In the first episode when he's running around the Galra ship looking for the red lion, he sees the Galra symbol and visibly flinches. It's a very quick moment, I only caught it on a rewatch.

Why is Aang Pidge?
>>
My biggest qualm with it is it's really tropey, at times. Like there's a "massive beam collision power-struggle" moment and all.

That, and there are a lot of "problem solved with sudden revelation of secret power that wasn't foreshadowed or anything" moments.

But I got past that pretty easily. It's a very optimistic show, it's strongest point is the compelling and likeable characters, and the action can be pretty great.
>>
>>14420097
>Shiro=Mako
>Allura=Katara
>Hunk=Bolin

Kind of an insult to the Voltron characters, to be honest.
>>
>>14420097
If Pidge was Toph and Shiro's Mako was more like Shiro's Shiro, I'd watch it. Sure, why the hell not.
>>
>>14401085
Humor is cringey at best, but overall I enjoyed it.

Got a kick out of the Gurren Lagann homage too... just hope once they actually acquire the Blazing Sword they all yell out the name.

Even this crossover fanart pushes Shiro/Keith.

But then again, Mako also became part of a popular gay ship. Probably more popular than Korrasami around here.
>>
>>14422307

No, you're not. I think it adds personality to the robot, and it's easiky exploitable for posts that require disspointment/dissaproval.
>>
>>14401085
I want to see a second season before making a definite call, but it's definitely very decent

I always like seeing the transformation 1:1 as the GGG Final Form

Hey, that's not fair. Hunk is actually tolerable.

>>
>>14401085
I liked it

It's not groundbreaking but it's fun. Keep in mind it ends on a cliffhanger and season 2 hasn't been announced yet to my knowledge.
