Eh, it was basically cute robots doing cute things, mainly because that master wasn't into the Esport side of things at all.

If you'd include that, the series would get grimdark as fuck, what with all the robot abuse happening in the scene according to background material.

Shinkis had ended as a line when the anime came out. In fact I remember a lot of people being confused about the anime being a thing because anime is usually just a glorified ad for the source material. So I guess someone on the production committee really wanted a Shinki anime to happen.

It was seriously ahead of its time. When Shinkis first came out they were a novelty few people has interest in. Now look at Frame Arms Girl.
