Also the combat between mobile suits was unbearably slow-paced. It was deliberate to draw scenes out and make it look more down-to-earth but it ends up clashing with the way mobile suits behave in the canon series, which is more fluid and animated.

Also the ending was bad and the compilation movie was terrible.

I'm kinda glad opinions have changed on 08th.

I used to be the only person to criticize it and I got crucified for doing so back in 2004-5 and that was just for the outrageous opinion that it wasn't perfect and it wasn't the best Gundam series despite the fact I liked and still like the show.

What gets me about 08th MS team is that it's possibly the single most happy go lucky shonen style gundam show minus G Gundam but its considered THE GREATEST THE MOST REALISTIC AND MATURE show in the franchise purely on it's aesthetic.

I think the whiplash between the aesthetic and what was actually going on in the show is probably what turned me off from the show at first in the fist half.

But like every time a new show is announced I get reminded that /m/ only cares about fights and designs and not actual stories, so it isn't a suprise.

And I'm saying this as somebody who had fun with the show and Karen is practically my waifu, but just....

0083 left me shocked at its horrible writing in the latter episodes (the earlier ones weren't great either), and it had a far more retarded romance than 08th, because of Nina's bizarre moodswings, the "gato is my ex" twist (as they like to pretend it is) and of course what she does in ep 13.
Hell EVERYONE was an idiot in episode 13.
And then there's the fax that a colony was just randomly dropped and would never be mentioned again because of the awkward retroactive nature of the OVA, and really, in general it's a big mess.
It also had the most embarrassingly blatant examples of the "Gundam retcon" formula spelled out in the epilogue, what with all the "cover ups" this, and "classified superweapons" that. I won't pretend that 08th didn't have some of that, but oh jesus 0083 was cock and balls out about it.

This reminds me of that part in War in the Pocket when it was revealed that the ship that was going to bomb the colony was caught and that what Bernie was doing was pointless IN A SINGLE LINE OF DIALOGUE FROM A NO NAMED CHARACTER. Literally the single most important detail of the entirely fucking plot.

I know this is a joke, but sans the pointless rape scenes with the fat superior officer dude, I genuinely think that was a good ova. There's actual world building, some good animation and mecha, and probably as good of tragic love story that they could fit in such a short amount of time. Yeah, yeah, it was a yaoi porn anime, but it was more than that and could have been much, much more. I really wish we got that part 2 that they previewed at the end. I want to see where they were going with it.

As the other anon said it shows how futile what it was doing was, not every character has to know all the information all the time and this showed that despise doing what he thought was the correct thing it didnt even matter anymore and you as the viewer know it but the characters dont.
