Nagano's design for the Gundam ZZ was dubbed the "Proto-Epsy Gundam" is an alternate-universe MS development article published in... The Anime magazine, IIRC. Attached is a pic. The art for the article was done by Kobayashi, but that's Nagano's ZZ alright. The article describes the P.E.G. as a refinement of the Psyco Gundam concept -- bigger than a regular MS, smaller than the Psyco.

Nagano's only designs for Gundam -- that got animated at least -- were for Zeta Gundam. And all mecha artwork for Zeta was cleaned up by Kazumi Fujita.

The idea was that since so many different people were designing mecha for Zeta, Tomino wanted one guy to unify all their designs into a consistent style. That guy was Kazumi Fujita.

From what I've dug up, a lot of Nagano's importance to Gundam design has been snubbed over time by Banrise. He basically set the type of aesthetic Zeta Gundam (the whole show) was supposed to have with his design original design for the Mk-II, and even before then with L-Gaim and the inner frame concept. And at the time of ZZ's airing, Nagano's name was never even mentioned in the credits. And we've all heard of how he was fired in CCA even though they were deep in production with only a week left before animation was to begin (from that Izubuchi interview).

I think part of Nagano's reluctance for Bandai to do anything with FSS comes from a lot of this bad blood between him and the shady corporation as opposed to his design translating well into kits as not. It was the same for Tomino as well, which resulted in Victory being his middle finger to Bandai.

In CCA, reportedly Nagano was asked to turn in his mechanical designs by a specific deadline. He turned them in somewhat late, which didn't cause any immediate tension, but the reason behind this was that he had decided to overstep his boundaries, and turned in a giant ass binder of personal designs for every single prop, character, costume, setpiece, mecha, button, floor tile, etc in the film. This is such bullshit. He was the lead mechanical designer. Pilot outfits, cockpits, and mecha are typically what mecha designers are in charge of. Some of Nagano's designs like this I really love, as well as his quirkier unconventional designs like the Hamrabi above. However, he gets caught up in his own style and I don't like it on most of his designs. The feet, hands and general aesthetics are often very similar between his work for different universes (although there are plenty of exceptions and I usually love them) such as the incredibly over-exaggerated tall/jutting foreheads. To me he's a hit-and-miss designer. I think he really used to be better though, because Gothicmaid looks like shit.
