Memes aside, I agree. Its more forgiving in 0080 cause it was the first time we ever really saw Zeon in a likable, efficient, capable, and endearing light. It's only been ruined retroactively due to the incessant Zeonwank that permeated the franchise later on.

Because the child constantly insisted and forced himself upon him wherever they went? And the child was the only one in on everything, and despite everything, the only one on his side? A more reasonable criticism would be questioning Al's practically unflinching resolve in the face of real, proven danger at his age.

No, that'd be 0079. Ramba Ral is the obvious examples, but there's a couple of other, smaller examples of decent people in Zeon using good tactics and being nice throughout the show, like the guys who tried to destroy the Gundam with bombs in order to go home. The entire point of Zeon in 0079 was that while their side did horrible things and had shitheel leaders (especially Gihren), there were some decent folks in there despite it who just wanted to fight for their country or go home or whatever. The OVAs just include more of that, and while most of the Cyclops team are assholes, Bernie is the likable exception who we're supposed to empathize with. Just like Ramba Ral in 0079. That isn't Zeonwank, unless you think 0079 was Zeonwank too.
