I'm not sure how much I agree with Nausicaa's decision to destroy the only chance of engineering humanity to survive the world's purification. Humanity is responsible for the nuclear fallout that permeates the world, and also took responsibility for cleaning it. The people of the current world knew nothing of the nuclear war, and are only trying to survive the best they can. Nausicaa choosing to let nature take its course, even if it means humanity's extinction, damns all of the world to either become infected, or die in the new, clean world.

After all, when we dump oil in the ocean we don't just shrug and say "the dolphins can handle it". We try to clean that shit up and avoid doing it again.

Anno actually worked on the Nausicaa movie. There are rumors that Miyazaki absolutely hated him. Something about being disgusted by his obsession with war and violence after Anno proposed a spin-off just about Kushana. I don't know if it's apocryphal or not, but it makes for a nice story.

He said Anno can make it if he wants, then followed up by saying Anno can make whatever the hell he wants because he just doesn't care anymroe at this point, this was during his retirement speech to the press.

Anno said himself during that Russian interview (where he also claimed that anime had like 5 years left) that he had zero interest in making a Nausicaa sequel at that point.

Don't know if you noticed but God Warriors don't last too long, a fully matured one only kicks for seven days and then petrifies itself when it dies. So them being long lasting was never a priority.

The biggest problem with the ending wasn't Nausicaa decision, but the fact that she didn't carry it out thoroughly by destroying the Garden as well. You know, where the Dorok king got the Heedra and immortality from and used to take over. Someone would pull the same shit again, and the Garden keeper would do nothing to stop them. Also, the epilogue scene was rushed and inconclusive as fuck.

One of those endless Miyazaki anecdotes is that he supposedly didn't really like the ending but I didn't think accepting all of the post-apocalypse humanity's known history as just a transition period would have fit anything thematically either.

According to Miyazaki's notes, the original concept for the God Warrior was a giant piloted mecha. I'm guessing over time he changed it into a biomechanical monster (probably thanks to Anno's influence).

Coincidentally, this was Nagano's original concept design for L-Gaim (which he called Alon). Aesthetically, it's quite similar to Miyazaki's proto God Warrior. And these were both made around the same time.

Honestly, I like the mechanical look more than the naked monster one used later one. Maybe Miyazai used the organic version because it was easier to draw than the mechanical one.
