I did those, they are very unpredictable, you don't always get those nice long shards. And if you want then to grow out of a plastic part it would have to be prepared (possibly even small crystals embedded in the plastic) and submerged in warm liquid for quite some time.

And I'm afraid the plastic might actually start to change color since those are specially prepared concentrated solutions.

Fukui said it was stupid in an interview, along with the fact Bandai dictated at least some of Unicorn's plot to him. He almost certainly didn't like that idea but couldn't refuse since he was hired to write it. It'd be like blaming Tomino for Victory having it's first few episodes messed up or 0079 having lots of mobile armors. Sometimes you just can't fight the guys in charge and have to let them have their way.

He may be a hack for other things (I've no real idea, since the Unicorn OVA is the only work of his I'm familiar with), but that's almost definitely not his idea or fault.
