The OVA expands on the ending a bit. There is no manga, it predates the whole most animes being manga adaptations trend. It feels rushed at the end because it lost its last quater due to the main sponsor having to pull out.

Apart from the TV series and OVA, that's it I'm afraid.

Layzner MK-II does show up in SRW and even got a toy made of it. It's a cool design, shifting Layzner's design inspiration from Gundam to Macross

The JP wiki page seems to reference a novelisation of OVA 3 and that seems to be where the MkII is from. I have no idea where to find said novelisation and it definitly isn't translated.

Did it specifically reference MK-II over the Powered/New Layzner?

Seems a bit bizarre to change that, because I can imagine that if Eiji actually did have MK-II for the final battle, he would have utterly trashed Ru Kain instead of what actually happened

A majority of anime was based on manga even back in the 1960s tho senpai

Checking the details for both, Powered is mentioned as being in the novelisation, MkII is just 'appears in tie-in materials'. It seems to be implied that the Powered was a stopgap measure with MkII being the planned upgrade later if the show hadn't been cut short, according to a 1986 interview with Takahashi.
