Although it depends on what you consider a "victory" in this situation. He held his own in the sense that he didn't die, he didn't get the Lion stolen, and he stopped Zarkon in his tracks once or twice. Suggesting how powerful that motherfucker is and how inexperienced Keith is as a Paladin? All things considered, his display was fairly impressive.

But no, he didn't accomplish his actual goal going into the fight: defeating Zarkon. So that's a failure, sure.

Voltron has the most disappointed looking face since Heroman.

So who do you think would have piloted what Lions if the Galra had captured them all? I'm thinking Haggar being in the green is pretty obvious, given that the druids apparently like to fuck around with slaves and see what different things do. Sendak would have probably been red as a fighter who never gave up and wanted to prove himself, with Prorog or whatever Zarkon called him in the Blue, as a kind of rival for him who overstepped his limits at times, while Zarkon would obviously be the Black Lion/head. Which really just leaves the Yellow Lion, which I doubt there's any Galra that would have fit it, that we've met at least, which makes me wonder why Allura was so worried about them getting the Lions at all frankly. Maybe Lotor would have worked there though, even if we've yet to really see his new counterpart.

So I took /m/'s advice and watched New Voltron.

Surprisingly, Sweatie and Chocolate Space Elf fit right into the bro-fest without turning the entire thing to shit.

Because of that, this turned out to be one of the most mellow, impossible-to-hate cartoons I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, the heavy focus on characterization left little time for actual robot battles.

As for the dramatic tone of the show, it just isn't as fun as random idiots flashing slasher smiles, yelling nonsense and whacking enemies with giant, planet sized mallets.

The characters were also such raging normalfags that their blandness almost made my eyes glaze over.

The worst part is, with the LGBT chauvenists flocking around this show and projecting onto a character who ONLY pulled a Doubtfire gambit, I worry that the staff will start pandering to the politically motivated portion of the fanbase at the expense of good storytelling (a la the ending of Korra).

All in all, I'd still watch the second season, but with low expectations.

It's not a bad show per se, but I want more out of a /m/echa title than just generic characters, character-driven drama and a robot that serves as a weapon rather than the real star of the show.

Hopefully I'll be able to pop at least one hypeboner by the time this dedpairfest is over.

Otherwise, Voltron Force will still be my favorite Voltron remake, if only because it wasn't 26 episodes of constant suffering. IIRC they even used the upbeat original theme.

The odd thing here is that they really have potential to make the robot a character in itself. The robot does have potential to have a character and personality, due to how the lions function, and their bond with their pilots. I'm not talking something overt like Voltron chatting like a transformer, but some overt shows that it is indeed aware of what it is doing may be interesting.

It may also give a solid reason for the Black lion turning coat for Zarkon.

I really think people are over blowing this to a ridiculous degree. People project on popular fiction, this is common and nothing remarkable. I don't see why people projecting here will mean, Kieth will suddenly come out of his non-existent closet, or Lance will suddenly have a gender transition as he's floating around in space, or something like that. I will admit to being not familiar with the climate, as I haven't kept up with cartoons for a while, but I really don't think a few fans claiming up and down that Pidge is a transmale and a lesbian will have bearing on the show.

I will agree that Voltron himself doesn't show much much to frown at the camera, and when he does he isn't always portrayed as being very strong. Why that was done was simple.

They had an extremely limited voice actor cast. Look at the credits - there was something like 5-6 people with only one female cast member so they all had to jumble different sounds/types to try to make things as distinct as possible. Had they not gone with SAG voice actors they may have been able to hire more but then again we probably wouldn't have remembered it so fondly and there would have been no Peter Cullen.

Hell, certain episodes that had background females that were voiced by the male voice actors pitching their voices.

I know it's not well liked, but I hope they work Vehicle Voltron in somehow. Even if it's just a cameo.

I'm not too hard on the writers because Allura in the original was mostly a damsel in distress and was largely useless even when she took on the mantle for the blue lion from Shiro/Sven and the fact that the writers here are coming off Korra which had one of the most incompetent, unlikable, fuck up lead female characters in a western production so anything that stray from that path is a improvement.
