Yeah, that's pretty much SEED in a nutshell. It sets things up to be interesting, but then messes up the landing.

Kira was an interesting lead until they revamped him into a 70's super robot pilot.

Flay was an interesting character, but they just push her to the background while praising Lacus-sama.

The reasons for the war sound interesting when looking at the timeline, but the show just goes "racism lead to the war" while saying there was no reason to fight.

Every time, SEED went with the laziest, most basic solution to all it's problems and it took itself seriously. Which is really sad because the build-up is mostly solid.

As someone whose watched every Gundam series from MSG to 00, I can honestly say that SEED fucks up more than any other series. And yes that includes X because I could still rewatch that series than SEED/Destiny.

I hated 00's time skip and some of the pacing but overall, it was more redeemable than SEED and Destiny. Wing was plagued with inconsistency and its original director leaving early, but the series didn't revolve around the protagonists like Kira and Lacus. Even Zeta's autism made more sense than post-Aegis kamikaze.

The only good thing to come out of this mess was the Astray side-stories and Stargazer. I'd rather much watch Lowe Gear and the Junk Guild or Gai Murakumo with Serpent Tail than Kira. Hell Canard Pars was WAY more developed as a character despite being a failed prototype to what would later be Kira.

Premise and lore were pretty fucking solid.

Exploring genetic modification and the advantages it would bring over other people? That's a really big issue. I mean, ffs, some people sperg out over the idea of genetically altering a fetus so it exhibits a specific hair or eye-color, imagine how they'd react about coordination?

Then there's the social element. Nevermind racism, Coordination is basically automatization for the Creative Class. You're a lawyer? Awesome... but this other dude here is a lawyer and thinks like a fucking super-computer. You're an engineer? We just replaced a dozen of you with this one Coordinator.

Coordinators have garbage birthrates? Immigration and the question about whether shrinking populations are really so bad is relevant as fuck to the industrialized world. Now, of course, Japan has the debt issue and coordinators are inferred to be straight-up barren after a few generations, but fiction is built on hyperbole.

N-Jammers ruined radio communication and destroyed nuclear power, plunging the global economy into a massive depression? You want to talk about horrors of war "do the ends justify the means?" bullshit, this right here was something to really explore.

Seriously, so much god wasted potential.

Why do I get the feeling even the producers wanted Morosawa gone? I mean, just look at how over the top this defense is. Approved first draft? Could get a script written in one day?

Here's the ways I could see this happening.

1) Morosawa's scripts were coming in late, causing the producers to want someone else to write and get the show back on schedule. Fukuda refused and there was a fight, which ultimately resulted in pushing the show back further.

2) Producers wanted scripts to undergo revisions, no doubt wanting Shinn to be more prominent because he was the SOB they were trying to push. Fukuda refused to budge on his wife's writing, causing fights and the show to fall behind.

I mean, FFS the dub looked at the scripts and thought they were shit. Wouldn't the producers as well? But then again, the whole issues with the Cosmic Era seem to stem from letting Fukuda off whatever leash he was on and do his thing.

To be fair Terminal was a blantant retcon that came about halfway into the series when they realized the Kira faction had no chance in hell at dirctly opposing Zaft in a straght up as they were.

Early on in the show Kira and Lacus are almost helplessly uninformed and lament that even though they have a supe Gundam and a warship they're still undergunned and undermanned to the point where sending out a one eyed cripple is the on way Kira's getting any backup.

And then right around the midway point all of sudden they start talking about this Terminal thing and Lacus and Andy leave (after Andy only went out once in his MS for 5 seconds) to this secret MS factory staffed by tons of people.

In my own opinion, SEED have just the same issue most main-Gundam series have, and most anon here seems to think the same: it turns from a real robot to super robot in the end. When it came out, I was super hyped because it seemed like the introduction to a new timeline, not just a spin-off from the main series to produce gunpla, but an actual new timeline to replace the UC. The universe had so much potential: the coordinators, the N-jammers, the MS designs, and some of the characters were badass. I particularly appreciate Rau for not being the conventional Char clone, just a complete asshole and he is great at that. And then, enters the Freedom Gundam. At first it was nice, and the Freedom had a badass design, the battle of Orb with the Kusanagi leaving on the Mass Driver is quite good, and very emotional. But it's just not the same, you knew at this point that Kira would win, and the whole plot with Kira/Athrun being enemies was obsolete. I was also a lot confused about the fact that Andrew joined the Kira crew... That's when the show ended for me.

Honestly, I'm sick of the newtype bullshit in most Gundam. Tomino probably have a fetish about space wizard teenagers, but it's just not coherent with the wish to make true real robot, and I know that his involment in Gundam now is scarce at best, but his spirit and ideas just continue to ruin the franchise. To this day, I still think the first Gundam Tomino didn't directed, War in the pocket, is probably the best one. I feel like SEED had the same potential, starting with a new and fresh crew, and a new and fresh universe, but at the end someone probably thought that it missed the Tomino Newtype Wizard bullshit or something. The same goes for Gundam 00, interesting plot and story, ruined by super robot at the end.

At least in 00's case the super robot went far enough in Trailblazer to give it a unique identity after the total flop that was season 2. It also gave us the in-universe film adaptation.

SEED couldn't have possibly matched the 0079 or War in the Pocket in quality though. Not even the first half of 00. The staff was just too incompetent, regardless of whether Jesus Yamato became God or not.
