I feel like introducing the concept of a pilot having Fold Receptors and resonating with their songstress is a great sort of endgame for power levels and very much in line with Macross in general.

That said, we've seen with Messer that even people without Fold Receptors can pseudo-resonate as long as they have Var Syndrome because the bacteria that causes Var also enhances your receptiveness to suggestion through Fold Waves. Curiously, it seems that the main reason that Messer was able to control the Var and sync up with Kaname is that Heinz was out of commission. The important part is that people with Fold Receptors/Var can emit Fold Waves regardless of whether they sing or not, as evidenced by Hayate resonating with Freyja.

With that said...crazy theory time.

Mirage has frequently expressed concern at her possible susceptibility to Var due to her ancestry and now, her lack of Fold Receptors. Mirage will get Var. In her Var'd out state, she will be surprisingly hard to shoot down considering her current performance. This will lead to Hayate fighting her one on one to make her stop, with Freyja singing to try and calm her. Hayate will resonate and go all dance of light and attempt to dance through the skies with Mirage. She won't understand at first, but will eventually be drawn into his dance and begin to resonate with both him and Freyja, bringing her back to normal.

From that point onward, Mirage will be able to resonate with Hayate when they fly due to the combination of his Fold Receptors and her Var.

A bit of a crackpot theory, but I think its been setup for.

You should at least watch Macross 7 so you learn to like fun.

Again, an example like that doesn't really prove it can't happen. For another example of it not proving it can't happen, Jin from Aquarium Evol, another Kawamori show, got figures, phone straps and other merchandise. And again, he died. Merchandise does not guarantee on immunity. All it means is that the merchandisers think you'll be popular.

I think it matters because the character's presence in the show is what actually matters for initial merchandising (before they can switch things around to match popularity, if necessary).

"Dying" is a way of leaving the show, so if the character leaves early it's very likely they won't get much merchandising since it means the character won't have much presence in the show overall.

Early has already passed, since we're almost at the half way point of the show and one character only just died 10 episodes in out of 26. Even if you only want to count deaths not close to the show's ending, you still have several candidates, like some of the enemy guys in Valvrave, the Autoscorers in Symphogear (the first died 7 episodes in to a 13 episode show) and so on. Depending on what you want to make your cut off point you could also count Michel in Frontier (episode 20 of 25) and so on too.

She already is both those things so I doubt it. Freyja got jealous because Hayate was spending time with Mirage and both her and Freyja blushed when there was talk about confessing and not wasting time, so she's a love interest already.

She also gets more focus over the episodes so far than anyone in Delta or Walkure bar Hayate and Freyja, and has a probable character hook in her family legacy, with only Hayate and Freyja having character arcs too. Reina, Makina, Kaname, Chuck and Arad have none so far. Messer didn't have an arc, just two episodes of focus since they were killing him. And Mikumo has mystery and plot, rather than a character arc.

Can't you just dislike a character instead of trying to distort reality and pretend she's less central than she obviously is? If Freyja is going to win, she'll win. You minimising Mirage won't alter it.

The show might be misusing her, wasting her or whatever other adjective you wish to choose for it, but she's still there.
