Regeinland really had the most beautiful ship designs.

Roth's flagships and the Agrell were personal favorites of mine.

Plasma a shit unless it's the Absoluta.

Well, actually plasma is still bad even on the Absoluta, but the ship is broken enough for me to overlook such a minor flaw.

Kinda saw that coming the moment they hinted towards the REAPERS being a thing.

Spoiler that shit, anon.

And it's not really confirmed that EVERYONE dies. Besides, Yuri could probably just Flux them back or something.

It's a very open ending, but I don't think it's quite that dark.
>>
>>14344822
Serious talk, while the game's plot was engaging, I felt they really did take a lot of elements from Mass Effects, from the Mass Relays/Void Gates, Reapers/Overlords and Epitaphs being some form of Protean artifact. Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but I kept experiencing every new plot point with a sense of deja vu
>>
>>14344849
There are certainly quire a few similarities, but a lot of them are due to the two making similar references to classic sci-fi (mostly Clarke), rather than necessarily being a direct reference from one to the other.

So, to whomever in the last thread inquired about making Infinite Space ships in Galciv, I happen to have Zenito in that game, with the ships to match, though they're a bit shittier than the Lugovalos ones because I threw them together on the fly from memory so I could actually keep playing the game instead of losing the will to live.

In keeping with Zenito tradition, they had terrible population growth, hull capacity and ship durability, but high research, evasion and accuracy.

The Absoluta actually did manage to buff accuracy and evasion thanks to thulium mods, though tight supplies meant I couldn't build many, and my insistence on playing to type and not getting any hull space boosts nearly prevented me from fitting actual weapons on top of those modules and the hangar. As it stands, it's firepower is pretty lacklustre (unlike the Kajto, which killed all the things).

Also, yes. I made beeline for plasma guns and avoided fighting till I got them. It just wouldn't have been the same.

That one ship was the only Lugovalian ship I never actually built in GC2 (besides the Toutatis, since that game had no carriers). I just never got to the right point to build it, plus I didn't want to burn myself out spending hours on it (that and the more simple geometric shape would be a pain given how GC2's designer worked).

No need for pictures though, I can just keep my copy of the game at one side with the ship database open.

Y'know, thinking over it Desmond really was a chump.

I mean, when we meet him he's a bootlicking toady with ambition beyond his station as Eremon's adjutant, which was as far as he'd ever get under his own power. Then, just after conquering the SMC, Eremon got fucked up when the second most powerful man in the universe dropped in out of nowhere and blew half his fleet away, allowing Yuri to finish the job of shooting his now crippled flagship out from under him. This humiliating defeat entailed an automatic demotion and being stripped of his honours, which left Desmond holding the ball for all the credit, credit that he in no way deserved.

His superiors knew, of course, that he was a scrub. So they brought Coyle in to actually run the place, and gave Desmond a token acknowledgment in rulership of a Podunk little backwater system and the 'important' job uncovering the secrets of the epitaph which he was never going to be able to do since he's not an observer or tracker, which the emperor full well knows.

Basically, Desmond got kicked upstairs because no-one else in the Lugovalian command staff wanted to put up with him. And he STILL manages to cause them grief. What a loser.
>>
>>14350632
>>14350880
That's one thing I really like about Lugovalos. The empire may be rather violent and expansionist, but almost all the people involved are surprisingly decent. Desmond is obviously the exception, but even Eremon, asshole that he was, got a few rather nice humanizing moments.
>>
>>14351753
Yeah, Lugovalos is definitely my favourite evil empire in fiction because the evil part is debatable. As you say, most of the individual people are in some way sympathetic and likeable, with Eremon only really being subject to particular hate because of personal beef Yuri has with him. The only Lugovalians we see that are total assholes are Desmond and potentially Katida, and the latter didn't start that way and is kind of a monster of your own creation.

But it's not just the people. I love the chapter where they go back to scout out the SMC, filled with righteous fervour, only to discover to their shock that most people actually quite like their new masters, since they've improved quality of life, removed all the corruption of the old governments and now actually get shit done. And they take care of their people, as that clip showed. The only downside is that they've cracked down on unlicensed space travel, but for most people all this means is that they actually cleared out all those fucking pirates that infested the place, and that's not even including the other reason they do it i.e.interfering with the overlords. They're meritocratic too, with several of their highest placed people (Merril, Eremon, Ian, Katida not having been born in the empire at all and rapidly rising in rank through ability alone.

All this of course contrasting with the LMC governments that are violently squabbling over internal politics and who gets to be in charge even with an invasion on their doorstep, and you sit their seeing them repeating the mistakes of the SMC and wearily trying to sort out this mess and start to wonder if maybe Lugovalos doesn't deserve to win.

At least they join your crew in extra mode. And Bastian is an absolutely amazing gunner. Sadly, his brother is outclassed due to the "jack of all trades, master of none" thing being completely useless in a system where only one stat matters for any given crew position.

Maybe so, but why use him when you can have the legendary space pirate dream team of Valantin, Zachman and Celina (or Taranis if you don't use him as your XO)?

Of course, what characters are good to use in extra mode depends partly on what you get from the grab bag. Some characters are guaranteed, mostly major ones like Taranis or Brian or Safira (all of whom are very good), but a lot of the others are randomized.

Nah, the extra mode ages are drawn from both time periods, since it has characters from both. Taranis's would be from act 1, presumably since that's when he was introduced, though he looked the same back then too.

You just don't really expect the conquereor of LITERALLY THE ENTIRE OCCUPIED UNIVERSE SANS TWO GALAXIES to be middle aged.

Actually, come to think of it, Macklin is 75, which means he was kicking about before Taranis was even born. I wonder what the story behind the two of them is?

Taranis backstory prequel when?

>First time i remember seeing him was when Cico was proclaimed crown prince and he was by then already a grown man.
I may be misremembering, but I think that scene was between act 1 and 2. Hang on, I'll check.

Well, the scene is indeed between acts, though ambiguously. Taranis mentions that Cico's journey took 5 years, so likely it occurred no more than halfway through the act break.

Also, he's said to have 46 kids. Not bad for a guy in his friggin thirties.

I wonder how the empire works with Taranis being an observer. I mean, they just get magicked into existence, but he's supposed to be descended from the royal line, unless he just retroactively started that way. In either case I wonder what the empire was doing before he got in charge of it. Was the mandate to stop the overlords entirely his own design?

Yeah they're great, and it's no wonder Lugovalos uses them so heavily, plus unlike plasma weapons you can stick them on anything with the right slots. They're balanced out by only becoming available at the vey end of the game...but of course you can go nuts with them in extra mode.

The only real downside to them is that they only come in small and medium sizes.

Fun fact, the L3 small cluster missles are exactly as powerful as their equivalent QUANTUM TORPEDOES (and seven times more accurate, and target everything).

Medium quantum torpedoes are still much stronger though (as in over twice medium CMs at 500 attack, making them the single most powerful weapon system in the entire game), so if you can offset the accuracy issue and don't mind focusing on one target really hard they're also a very potent option.

>>14371205
That's unfortunate.

The Evstafi is still a bit of an odd choice, though. I've never found it hugely useful outside of a "poor man's Corsair" meatshield role at the front of the fleet. I mean, its stats are nice, but the fixed weapons are annoying, and the Hi-Stream Blaster is obviously rather useless. Unless you need durability, it's outclassed a bit by some of the other endgame battleships.

But then, the game's nowhere near hard enough to require some kind of optimized fleet composition, so it really doesn't matter.

Id say they are more like space Italy based on the ship names, though i am a bit torn on whether they are French or Italian.

Anyways, there was a choise to go against either their regular military with rear admiral someone or with Schneizer against the Zanetti corporation.

I picked rear admiral jarhead and went against the regular schmucks.
In return i fought some mediocre ships, i got some mediocre ship blueprints and i managed to shanghai the elder prince of their nation into my fleet where he acted as a great security officer.

Yeah, Teodoro is the only captain besides Zachman to put up any kind of actual fight in a melee.

I recall that which route you picked determined which minor Regeinland officer got microwaved by the ZR1, either the bland guy or the green haired lady.

I always wondered how the group that went to Zenito in the Enemonzo route (Lord Roth? I think it was Lord Roth) actually succeeded, considering the circumstances of the situation there. Enemonzo is a straight fight, but Zenito presents a more unusual problem.
>>
>>14372145

Plasma actually is quite powerful, level for level it's much better than lasers. The issue comes from the fact that they're always fixed and are often at lower levels. The Evastafi has good standard weapon slots (all medium and large), and all of them are as high as plasma is seen to go (level 3, save for the diffusion plasma which is Lv2, but the Evstafi is the only player ship with one so it's not possible to compare.

Just to compare, the best large laser (Lv5) is strength 340, 20 more than the best large plasma, the best medium laser (Lv6) is 10 points weaker than the best medium plasma, and the best large particle laser (Lv3) is 10 weaker than Lv2 plasma.

So there's not all that much of a performance difference. The only issue is with some ships (mostly Zenitonian and cheaper libertasian ones) being stuck with lower level guns.

Just look at the Absoluta. It's medium guns are actually stronger than its large ones!
>>
>>14375964
>the best medium laser (Lv6) is 10 points weaker than the best medium plasma
On the other hand, quantum torpedoes kick the shit out of it to the tune of 220 extra damage. And while they have shit for accuracy, you can stack accuracy out the ass on late-game ships, even without the Absoluta.

The Evstafi also lacks any XL slots, so other ships have that advantage over it as well. My personal preference (barring the Picaroon and Corsair, of course) is the Haruul. With its five free weapon slots, including an XL, it can unload 2020 damage in a single attack action, quite an advantage over the Evstafi's 1190. As an extra bonus, it can also carry fighters.

Yeah, as established the most powerful medium weapon (and most powerful weapon of any size) is quantum torpedoes, though their comparatively low accuracy is still noticeable even with end game modules and crew.

XL slots are overrated, I think. They're nice to have, but no ship has more than one, and multiple large slots are just as good.

>As an extra bonus, it can also carry fighters
It can carry 25, tops. And doing that requires you to use the most spacious module location on the ship. And on that note goddamn is the module capacity and layout absolutely atrocious, being Adis built and all. Compare the Evastafi, which has tons of space, including many 3x3 slots. It has better base stats too.

All this is academic to me though. I'm not particularly fond of the Evstafi (found it kind of underwhelming myself). But I couldn't ever bring myself to use a Haruul because of its biggest disadvantage of all: it's ugly as sin.
>>
>>14376117
Adis ships are pretty hit-or-miss as far as appearance is concerned, but I don't mind the Haruul. Sure, it doesn't look as nice as some of the Enemonzo and Regeinland ships, but I wouldn't call it ugly.

It is undeniably both of these things, but it is also undeniably the best ship in the game, statistically. Its stats are very high, though not the best. However, its extremely high module space (tied for highest in the game) allows you to cram in all the best modules and exceed all the other super ships. Thanks to navigation and thruster modules it can have flat out the best evasion in the game on top of being among the toughest and most well armoured, especially with shield frames and deflectors factored in, making it hellacious to take down. On top of this it has an excellent full set of open weapon hardpoints, and a catapult with room for a full fighter complement. And it can do all of this at once.

Think of it like this: the Picaroon is a macrocosm of its captain. At first they appear very silly and comical despite their fearsome reputation, and this impression lasts right up until they take off their coat and start punching, at which point it becomes immediately apparent that they are absolutely no joke.

It's a perfectly fitting ship for him really.

Not quite.

It may be a joke build for a useless ship, but if you REALLY want to dodge every single attack that comes your way, look no further.

Fun fact - in addition to its absurd mobility, the Plugilo also has the highest base gauge speed in the game. Still useless, though.
>>
>>14377494
Actually no.

I always figured you could never fit enough evasion modules in a Plugilo (it being Zentionian and all), so goes to show how much research I did. But I just had a thought, and it turns out that if you take a Lykougos (a much more spacious ship with a base speed of 45) with and fit it with the best evasion modules you can get its evasion up to 93. So the Picaroon is only the third most agile ship in the game. Still really fucking good considering its other performance and the competition though.

Of course, the Picaroon still beats both in survivability because of its higher armour and durability.

Messing about with my own Picaroons, it seemed like I had a choice between 10 points of armour and 5 of evasion and went for the former. You can't fit the best of every module, but you can get close.
>>
>>14378329
Wait, nevermind. Turns out you can do it with the Erebos as well, and probably a few other ships on this list. Well, whatever. The Picaroon isn't even built for speed, it's a tanky battleship, and it's still capable of hitting evasion in the seventies.
>>
>>14378329
>I always figured you could never fit enough evasion modules in a Plugilo (it being Zentionian and all)
If you're willing to focus down on specific aspects of a ship's performance rather than trying to upgrade everything, a little space can go a long way.

That's why I said earlier that I don't mind the relatively limited space on the Haruul. If you keep it off the front lines, you can ditch the defensive modules, leaving it with plenty of room to support a very respectable offensive setup.
>>
>>14377494

>>
>>14378941
>little space
Yeah, but Zenito is even worse than Adis when it comes to module space. Look at the Absoluta. Aside from the (practically essential) hangars, there's very little that even fits in there.

I don't know about specialising the Haruul. I couldn't even fit both top level fire control rooms (presuming the catapult is used, since you mentioned it). I guess I just prefer having ships that can do everything well instead of just one thing really well. Nor could I stand to see a battleship without any kind of defensive enhancements. Though at the stage where you consider using any of these ships their actual performance has long since ceased to matter. I kind of wish the game didn't gimp its enemies so heavily, especially later on it's clearly lying through its teeth about how much health their ships have.

How do you stand on carriers? Worth it, or do you prefer putting your fighter squadron together piecemeal from smaller hangars?

a ship that goes into battle at all it's more like a command and communications vessel that should never be in battle in the first place.
And it's stats support that fact. Not just a behind the battleships deal but out of the fight all together.

The fact it's so bad aside from the NOS only kept me from using it because it felt like cheating and to be honest you
can win without it easily enough.
>>
>>14379863
I prefer piecing together battleship hangars if I'm using normal fighters, since it's really easy to hit the cap. That changes a bit when mobile weapons come into play, though.
>>
>>14379895
Real command vessels are (and have been) usually in battle, or at least in the field. Carriers and battleships and such.

The Absoluta makes sense stat wise when you consider its role in Zenito. They have no other vessel with a catapult, so the Absoluta is kind of an all in one flagship. It has lots of fighter capacity, but not as much as a real carrier because it has to fit other systems. Its weaponry only barely squeaks into battleship grade, there are heavy cruisers with better gun slots (it's only slightly more well armed than Zentio's own Kajto), again because it has to do other things. It has decent armour about right for a battleship of that tier, but has a flimsy hull behind it, making it less durable than a real battleship.

Basically, it has to fill both of the game's usual flagship rolls. I'd say it's less battleship though. If the Renkonti and Eleganta count as carriers then the Absoluta is damn well a carrier.

It's really not all that bad outside of NOS. It's just not as good as the other late game battleships, because NOS is kind of its gimmick, and its stats are the sacrifice it pays for them. It's really more a support platform (fire support, fighter support, electronic support) than a real battleship.
>>
>>14379863
Also, to elaborate on my choice to ditch the defenses on the Haruul: I like to run something similar to the Space Mexico strategy, with something really durable (Corsair is ideal, but the Evstafi works almost as well if you're on a budget) parked at the front of my fleet to soak up fire and protect the other ships. With that defensive measure in place, I can afford to skimp a bit on the defenses for my other vessels, because those formation bonuses really do have a huge effect on incoming attacks.
>>
>>14379925
No you're mistaking Battleships with command abilities with what i said which is more like what the USS Saipan and USS Wright after being refit.

Also noone put's carriers into the line of battle unless they had no other choice.
>>
>>14379942
Modern carriers have plenty of command and control capabilities, which is why they use them as flagships.

>Also noone put's carriers into the line of battle unless they had no other choice.
Well no, but that's because of the mechanics of modern naval warfare. In the context of a space opera where everything has as much range as missiles, yes carriers are counted as in combat.
>>
>>14379937
>something really durable parked at the front
I thought most people did that. Common sense really, deploying like the AI does is a waste. I did once try a set up with cruisers up front using evasion and health boosters, but I still lost three of them to the final boss using this strategy. Nothing beats a battleship up front.

Though my need to have a battleship at the front and my equal need to have a battleship flagship nearly landed me in trouble eventually, since my aging Agrell didn't take well to Zenito.

I was also doing this largely because my other ships were a carrier up the back, and a pair of Borodinos that I'd clung onto from act 1 and outfitted with upgraded gear to use as gunboats. You want to talk about glass cannons, try using SMC ships in act 2.
>>
>>14379994
Agrell works okay in Zenito, if only because fighters work wonders in that chapter. Its hangars may not be massive, but it's quite serviceable. It's what I had as my flagship there.

I also had one or two SMC ships still hanging around (I actually pulled my massively outdated Eudora out for the duration of Zenito, because I wanted all the fighters I could get), and it is pretty sad how fragile they are.
>>
>>14379942
The point is moot anyway, the Absoluta isn't a dedicated command ship, the Kuraja is.
>>
>>14379994
On my first playthrough when i didn't know diddly i had a carrier as MY ship when i hit the timeskip.
Oh boy did i wish i'd
kept a Borodino as ship numero uno.
>>
>>14380026
I quite like it, it kind of makes sense. You can gut a ship and replace all the internals and weapons, even add extra armour. But there's only so much you can do to reinforce a hull that was just made with less advanced technology. They're also usually much smaller.

There's even a ship class demonstrating this. The Adrasteia is a Kalymnos battleship design retrofitted with Lugovalian equipment. So it has this weird mix of stats that fall right between the divide between Magellanic clouds.
>>
>>14380038
> using SMC carriers
> ever
I'm so sorry, anon.
>>
>>14380038
SMC ships have such poor durability at that point, is there even much difference? You grab something from the Xeos belt union or run away and hold out until Regeinland.

>>14380065
To be fair, the game flat out hides key stats from you. It's not like most players could be expected to know that you can buy a cruiser with better carrier capability than any of those overpriced junk piles.

At least Nova Nacio has no other catapult equipped ships. What the hell was Kalymnos thinking with the Daphne?
>>
>>14380073
> the game flat out hides key stats from you
That is unfortunate. If I have some time later, I've been thinking about trying to add some of those to the reference images that have been posted in this thread and the one last month. Gauge speed, fighter capacity, etc.
>>
Yeah, fighter capacity is understandable because it depends on available hangar modules, but there's no excuse for hiding guage speed. And that's just the stuff I don't know, in game it also conceals the module capacity and layout, as well as weapons and hardpoint sizes, all it gives you is how many are fixed. Sometimes shopping for new hardware feels like entering a lottery. Or a car dealership.

"Can I interest you in a Kolonio? Finest carrier in the SMC!"
>>
>>14380123
Kolonio would have been fine if the Eudora didn't do it better with more guns. But there was alot of things that appeared wonky or outright broken.
>>
>>14380136
Well no, it would still be a terrible ship. It's very overpriced for that point in the game (like most carriers), is utterly flimsy, has crap for guns, and to top it off carriers are a waste of a slot early on anyway because of how weak SMC fighters are and how few slots you have.
>>
>>14380123
Hey kid, i can see you want some high quality, high performance machines, why not try a Necesia?
The fanciest and priciest battleship in the entire SMC!
It's made by folks who came from LMC ages ago, so its gotta be great, eh?

Technically this is most of Kalymnos's lineup. But at least they HAVE a lineup, and at least their ships are worth a damn. You're playing for quality, not a brand name.

Nova Nacio's whole catalogue has that feel about it. Did you know that the Admiralo is actually more expensive than several LMC destroyers? It's not even very good by SMC standards! What a gyp. Lanco Warship Manufacturing is a bunch of hucksters, they've not produced a single decent design, yet they make you pay through the nose. In fact, fuck Lanco himself. I bet the only reason he pawned Katida off was because Lugovalos actually know good workmanship when they see it, so he wasn't staying afloat on merit.
>>
>>14380527
No wonder the thing that constantly came into my mind when ever i saw nova Nacio was vid related.

I hated her so I kinda didn't care about her stupid death.

Also it was obvious someone would die so that the betamax kid would finally get his shit together so it doesn't come very surprising.
>>
>>14384968
That's pretty much exactly what it was. The show took place in a largely ignored backwater region much like the SMC.

Great show, too. S2 probably never, unfortunately.

Maybe off topic, but the thread's about dead anyway so fuck it. I was watching this the other day and it started feeling familiar to Infinite Space. Specifically the Grand Cross and Parabellum (and their crews) were giving me strong LMC vibes of being bigger way more advanced ships (with grandiose interiors) from a much more important region where grand space opera events were occurring and them being a big fish in a small pond around all these dinky junk ships.

Some LMC nation testing a gimmicky new battleship against pirates in the SMC, and an LMC pirate intervening seem like exactly the sort of thing that could have happened in that game.
>>
>>14384977
Actually, now that I think about it, isn't that fairly similar to the situation with Cico and Celina when you first meet them?
>>
>>14384985
Yeah, that was probably one of the things that affected that notion.

Of course, that particular event turned out to be on an even bigger scale.

I do wonder. Why was Celina slumming it in the SMC? And more pressingly, what in the world prompted Cico to choose a fair to middling Enemonzan planetary defence ship for his quest to pick fights with every pirate in either galaxy?
>>
>>14384977
Sorry for noob question but what show?
>>
>>14385175
Boku no Bodacious Space Pirates/Moretsu Space Pirates.

It's not quite as exciting as the title suggests, but it's alright.

I was hoping Yuri'd bend her over and go at it myself.

Right infront of the Garner sisters.

I loved everything about this game. The characters, the story, the music/OST, I just wish it had gotten a proper direct sequel instead of a spirtual successor on the PSP. The combat system was okay but jesus christ the game would've shown off a lot better on PC or a 3DS or Vita then the original DS.

>>
>>14386117
Yeah even sticking it on 3DS/PSP would have been enough the DS just wasn't upto the task for a game like this.

Can you imagine IS on a PC/PS3/360?
>>
>>14386234
I imagine we'd have LotGH tier numbers of vessels in glorious high resolution fully 2D animated or 3D modeled warships. It'd be great.

To be honest, I wasn't all that surprised by it, her being the mentor character and all. There were more impactful deaths for me, like Roth/Nele & the Schniezer brothers. Katida's fate if you recruit her was also a bit of a gut punch.

Reminder that Valentine did NOTHING WRONG!
>>
>>14388637
I think that was the whole trail thing.

He and his siblings go out alone and whoever comes back alive is recognised as an heir or something.
>>
>>14388802
Valentine spent way to much time dicking around but other than that he was far from the worst.
>>
>>14389272
But his older brother had a battleship, one apparently based off of the Erebos (or vice versa), a fairly high end custom ship design.

>whoever comes back alive is recognised as an heir or something
Actually it was about accumulating glory. This is why Cico kept picking fights with opponents way out of his league, it could get him more fame and acknowledgement faster. Though Oisin decided to just off the competition.
>>

>>14389279
He stole Yuri's plot device (though after Yuri had already parted with it) because Yuri wasn't ready yet, and dealt him a non-permanent injury. Apart from that he did nothing but swoop in and save the day.

Well yeah, but only because he had to wait on you.

I really liked his friendship/rivalry with Yuri
