More than a month passed since the creation of the previous thread, and it's now beyond it's limits, heading torward it's demise. But fear not, here is the new 70s & 80s mecha thread. If you've missed the previous thread, here it is >>14172958.
Most of you already know the rules, right? If not, here's what this thread is for: argue, discuss and dump stuff like artworks, fanarts (if they're well made of course), sketches, magazines' scans, artbooks, DVD/VHS/LD/CD/BD's covers, ads, musics, screen-caps and so on, that have a link to a Sci-Fi and Mecha anime/comic/novel/film/OVA.

So I read the Mazinger Z manga, and I just now started watching the anime of Great Mazinger since it seems like it's getting subbed again, and it feels like there's a disconnect between the two. I know there's a new pilot named Tetsuya who replaces Kabuto and the Mycenae Empire replaces Dr. Hell's army as the antagonists, but it seems like they already explained this stuff at some point in the anime and we're already dropped in the middle of it. Does the anime version of Mazinger Z explain things that the manga doesn't, and do I need to watch the anime to fully understand what went down?
>>
>>14329616
Go watch Mazinger Z vs Ankoku Daishogun.

The last episode of Mazinger Z also works, theoretically, but the movie is better.

As for Dr. Hell, he's kind of suffering from a bad case of dead after Kouji killed his ass.
>>
>>14329626
Thanks, I'll try the movie.

>As for Dr. Hell, he's kind of suffering from a bad case of dead after Kouji killed his ass.

I got invited to an anime group on FB, just some local kids and friends of friends. I posted a link to a sub of the first episode of Mazinger Z, and I was pleasantly surprised that a couple of 'em seemed to give it a chance.

I just finished to read Mazinger Z and I was wondering if this serie really is the first to include giants robots that are piloted from the inside, I always find the whole "Go Nagai Invented piloted robot" hard to believed, was there no other series with a similar concept ? In animation, manga or even live action series or toku ?
>>
>>14330476

Well, the only thing that come to mind is Astroganger, but I don't know if it's actually piloted, even though the MC do get inside of him (I haven't watched the show yet):

>>
>>14331755
Wouldn't Mazinger still beat it out by being a manga first? Astroganger meanwhile looks to have been an original show.

I thought Great Mazinger was the immediate next series in production order after Mazinger Z. I read the manga of Z because, while there are good subs of Z now, the ones I could find were 100GB in partitions of 8GB each and I was just too lazy to download that on my 250GB hard drive and bumfuck-nowhere internet connection. Someone in the thread already recommended I see the movie, and I did, but is there another series I should have watched before Great Mazinger I don't know of? I have an autistic need to watch series in production order unless there's a really huge benefit to watching them out of order, like that movie that bridges Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger together for people who didn't watch the anime version of Z.

I'll probably watch the anime version of Z eventually since I do want to see exactly how Dr. Hell goes down (unless there was a chapter of the Z manga I couldn't find that shows it), but just seeing how Z fell is enough for the time being to be able to watch Great Mazinger with a reasonable understanding.
>>
>>14343072
>is there another series I should have watched before Great Mazinger I don't know of?

I mean, yes, you should have watched Mazinger Z. It's a bit hefty of a download (23.85 gigabytes if my torrent isn't lying to me) but that's because it's also 92 episodes worth of material.
>>
>>14337190

What is it? A quick search gave nothing, and a google image reverse search gave me pics from the Little Mermaid.
>>
>>14343072
The issue with going between the manga and anime for the Z -> Great transition is that the transition is in the Z anime for the anime, but it's in the Great manga, for the manga. So, jumping from the Z manga to the Great anime, you're missing both the manga and anime's takes on the transition.
>>
>>14343072
Great Mazinger isn't even that good compared to Mazinger. It completely lacks everything that made Mazinger good. Ironically, the best episodes were the last ones when Kouji returns to help kick ass. Seems that having Kabuto Kouji makes everything better.
>>
What would you guys recommend for LoGH: Laserdisc rips or BD rips? I've heard mixed things about both. Sounds like BDs had re-done animation that isn't so great?
>>
>>14346804
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=4036
>>
>>14346857
They had the hindsight to do that for Grendizer from the get-go, at least.

>>14348129
The new animation sticks out like a sore thumb, yes. It's sort of like watching the compilation movies for Zeta Gundam.
>>
>>14343072
>unless there was a chapter of the Z manga I couldn't find that shows it
I believe when the manga was compiled for a re-release in Japan, a final chapter that shows Dr. Hell's defeat was added. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a translation anywhere.

>>

in Star Fleet he's Barry Hercules, not sure about X-Bomber
>>
How does discotek make money by subbing all these obscure series?
>>
>>14350552
Sub only releases are cheap and they generally sell through Right-stuf who are online only. Low overheads all round and enough devoted fans to make it worthwhile.

It's not that misleading for Black Magic M-66 imo -- the way they placed the M-66 make it look like it's the main source of danger in the OVA, and both units appeared in that jump suit at first.
The Humanoid flyer truly is misleading though, they don't even show coffee in it.

Yeah, one really shouldn't panic so soon when there's little activity after a burst of speed. It's far from X Nebula levels of delay (my apologies). Meanwhile, it's been over two months since Silver Castle Subs expressed the intention to sub Gold Lightan, yet nothing happened.
>>
>>14413344
2 months prep time is fairly normal for a new series, raws have to be procured, staff rounded up, translation conventions agreed on, song translations sorted, possibly building a buffer up, etc.

I wish Crinn would answer my e-mails too. We had 4 eps almost ready to go (as in I had the release post drafted and TL notes done) when his PC broke, not heard a thing since beyond his backup laptop being a toaster. I send an e-mail every 3 months or so at this point to try and get a result.

Oh, I'm not panicking. I know that he'll come back to it. I just want to know what's causing the delay so I can keep my expectations real. If it's gonna be another few years, then that sucks, but at least I won't be getting my hopes up after that promising return.

And speaking of which,
>>14413569
it'll be some time before you go back to Raideen, won't it?
>>
>>14415127
Should have another episode within a week, trying to have an ep in the buffer (28 just needs final QC, but 29's only partially TL'd) and my current temp job should end end of this week depending on the leftover piecework.

Tsk. Man, I have every single issue of B-Club except for issues #1 and #2. Probably gonna have to go through a Yahoo Japan Auctions proxy to get them...

Alright, well thanks for doing it either way

I have some kind of odd fascination with the Raideen series. I feel drawn to it despite knowing that none of the three shows rise above average. But I can't watch in production order like 4chan always tells me to if the first show isn't subbed. So, uh, godspeed

Though out of curiosity, I've seen you mention having lots of other projects to do as well. I know you're also doing the Layzner BDs, but what else are you working on?
>>
>>14415604
I know that she has OCRs for (Super Robot) Red Baron to do (probably using the Mill Creek DVDs, because lord knows not everyone even owns the BCI Eclipse set).

On a non-Starseeker note, MartyMcFlies will be doing Dorvack, which may happen either before or after he runs out of records to rip.
>>
>>14415604
Things I am actively juggling: Raideen, Dragonar QC, Lensman TL checker, Layzner BDs, Gridman QC, Red Baron encoding (need to check the last round of voodoo worked). Baxinger would be in this too if Crinn ever reappears. My sole involvement Great Mazinger is managing the DDLs and rekease posts.

Advance warning if you watch Chouja Raideen, it's at its best when being silly. And by silly we're talking a villain of the week being Donald Duck in a flying castle turning people into penguins.

Also Great Mazinger 29's out:

Adding to this, modern Reideen has absurdly slow mecha fights, owning to the fact that the mech really shows its weight. It also has writing issues that are a bit irritating.

Modern Reideen isn't what he was talking about, he was talking about Chouja/The Superior, the 90s series.

That said, neither is in the scope of this thread.

You're an absolute legend.

Why is Ginga Senpuu Braigers OP so fucking cool

It has no right to be so cool

Also all the shading in it, when was the first instance of the typical 80s shading on mecha? Because I'm an uneducated pleb who doesn't know any examples earlier than 1981s Braiger OP.

True, but I was saying in addition to what was being talked about. Also, Starseeker is a she.

That's Yoshinori Kanada for you, the guy was a legend when it came to dynamic animation.

You'd have only half the watchers of now picking it up if it looked more like the usual early 80s mecha OP. Like say, Baldios (the song is good in itself though).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiYK130Fr70
Also check out 1980 Tetsujin opening for the 80s kind of nonsensical shading.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FvnOMwsS7k
Gold Lightan also has a notably non-boring opening (especially given how ugly the characters are, they just knew to prefer robot smashing).

And worst offender of terrible openings from 1980-1981 is easily Godmars

For as small as Kokusai Eigasha is I'm sure they made a huge contribution to changing the previous decade's OP paradigm.

It's not the best op of the time, but I don't find it bad either.

Anyway, I love the 1980 Tetsuwan atom's OP:

Just finished Dairugger, and it was actually better than I expected.
How did Voltron adapt both Golion and Dairugger, both kind of violent and serious at times, into a single show for American audiences?
>>
>>14426062
they didn't really mix the two like Robotech too much, it mostly just dubbed Golion and cut the crazy violence
>>
>>14426062
It helps that they just picked two shows that were aesthetically similar (and in the case of Bismarck, just treated it as its own thing and didn't connect it to anything). Also, the whole confusion in regards to asking about "the show with the lions" (winding up with Golion instead of Daltanious).
>>
>>14415127
30 came out, too.

So there was no need to worry after all.

That's an unusual way to design gundam head. Are there any other designs of the time that look that way?

So why is it that Bandai keeps bringing back and referencing Mazinger Z's Reinforced Rocket Punch while they ignore the Freezing Beam? The Reinforced Rocket Punch was only used in 1 episode, while the Freezing Beam were in at least five.
>>
>>14433135
More iconic, cooler ,etcetera.
>>
>>14433135
Because the Freezing/Reitou Beam was shit.

That said, when do they reference the Reinforced Punch? It's not all that often. SRW does it, but SRW uses it as a finisher because Mazinger doesn't have a proper one. Outside of that I can't think of any major work that used it, but I do remember that Reitou got into OVA Mazinkaiser's movie and OHKOd one of the Seven Generals.
>>
>>14434271
The Freezing Beam was cool

It's not often that robots get non-damaging support moves like that, so they're always neat to see, and it's nice to see those superfluous horns on Mazinger Z actually used for something.

Apart from SRW, the Reinforced Rocket Punch has also been popping up in action figures. I know the SRC Mazinger Z has it. That's why I mentioned Bandai and not DP.

Anyway, I thought they more often used Breast Fire or Giant Swing Rocket Punch as Toeizinger Z's finisher in SRW anyway.
>>
Speaking of Mazinger, Appollon A1 is perhaps the most fabulous mechanical beast yet.
