Post some good shmup /m/, preferably with some awesome mecha design
The mech bosses were always the most ridiculous ones in every Ray game. The one in Raystorm is particularly bad, and it doesn't even have a melee attack!
Stg games got some really good mechanical design out there but i will never be good at these kind of games

In the abstract, they're not hard so much as you need to keep a cool head. Also learning to look at your sprite and its general hitbox location rather than the swarm of bullets and the enemies they come from, that helps a bit too.
At least up until you hit the games with arcane wizard levels of systems bullshit:
>LOOK AT ALL THESE METERS AND SYSTEMS AND REALLY SURREAL POST-MODERN SHIT (Hellsinker)
>I HOPE YOU'VE BEEN COLOR CHAINING OR ELSE YOU CAN'T ACTUALLY BEAT THE BOSSES WITH YOUR WEAK WEAPONS (Radiant Silvergun)
>TACTICAL SUICIDE TO REDUCE THE DIFFICULTY OF THE GAME (Battle Garegga), ALSO DON'T DROP THE BONUS MEDALS (Yagawa shmups in general)
>DOING THINGS WILL RANDOMLY ADVANCE THE GAME STATE BUT NO ONE HAS A CLUE WHY IT DOES (ΔZeal)

Then there's whatever the hell you're supposed to do to affect the relationship system in Progear. Pic not related.

That said, Astebreed is a decent starting point.
Systems are simple, doesn't force itself into the arcade model of one-hit deaths/three lives/earn your continues, also it's ABSOLUTELY HYPE AS FUCK.

Is this any good?
