Why do some people say Doctor Maki is the best KR villain? Is it some in-joke in the community that I don't know about?

Personally, while some of his initial backstory moments are interesting, overall he's pretty dull and boring. Definitely not the best villain in the entire franchise.

OOO was my first rider, having seen all the Heisei-era riders and a few Showa-era riders Tajador is still my favorite form.

While he's not the best he's certainly one of the best. He's a madman, someone that knows he's doing wrong yet he can't stop doing it.

Heck, even in the serious moments he freaked out when they took his doll. He was really insane. All of his philosophy about how things are only really beautiful when they met their end was really good as well.

And I personally thought his lack of personality (his void) was a good thing. Just went to show you that they were against a real madman and, at the same time, someone who was the other side of the coin to Eiji, who was also void.

The two of them were void inside but while Maki used that void and tried to expand it to all the world, to end it, Eiji ended up refilling that void. I think the contrast between the two was one of the strong points of the series.

The weekly plots are done really poorly, they're just not interesting or integrated into the plot well, which is a shame after W which i was so impressed by because i thought it weaved the two episode arcs with an ongoing plot excellently

support cast isn't that great, Hina and Birthday meme man get old pretty fast, also Birthday meme man was just disappointing in general by the end

The Greeed are not threatening whatsoever, they get their asses kicked and run away so many times that they lose all sense of being dangerous or being in danger themselves until the last 10 episodes

Dr Maki has a pretty interesting backstory but otherwise falls flat

the series doesn't know if it wants to be serious or goofy

it's just way too "safe and tame" coming from the person who wrote Ryuki and really shook up what Kamen Rider was about. I haven't seen Den-O yet which is also by her. actually on that note in general it feels like the first really "watered down for kids" rider series that i've seen. W which I watched AFTER I thought carried the spirit and tone of the early heisei shows way better, especially in shit like the accel movie

These are both fair, anons.

In both those shows cases I just enjoyed the casts more than in OOO. Though I would say Blade's problem is more that too much shit happens in the beginning but you have no prior investment in which to give a shit because it throws you in like you've already seen 20 episodes of the show.

Drive at least has the interesting police backdrop and a handful of mildly interesting cases. The second halves of both shows are also way better than what OOO ends up amounting to. Especially Blade.

Really? I watched Double again recently and the weaving was annoying. Particularly at the beginning when Nazca and Taboo didn't achieve much beyond letting the episodic Dopants get away until the Bird two-parter. The middle portion was an improvement since Accel had a much stronger antagonism towards Weather, but it's a little strange to think about how the show seemed to forget the plotline about Philip's connection to the Sonozakis for a big chunk. I'm not too fond of the explanation for Shotaro avoiding doing anything about Terror either since it wasn't explicitly addressed until near the end.

I agree with Nasca and Taboo largely being there to let the Dopant escape, but at least it leads up to Kirihiko's death, which was a real surprise for me, especially in a neo-heisei series; I was totally expecting him to become an allied "rider" or something.

But some of the other things, like the gradual development of Wakana from when her arc ended, which was pretty early in, really impressed me. The entire Weather arc is fantastic too.

The character interactions are way too fucking good.

Takumi, Kiba, Kusaka and Kaido are fucking hilarious. It's just a bunch of dudes swagging each other for 50 episodes and they're all really entertaining to watch. If Inoue is good at anything, it's electric character interactions. They were good in Agito and they were good here. It also just has random memorable shit like Mr J. And it starts out really, really strong. Kiba's story really pulled me in right from the beginning, and that combined with Takumi/Mari interactions basically sold me on the show.

The OP is also gdlk and the suits are awesome, especially how the tubing lights up in the dark and shit.

Faiz literally in my opinion had so much potential to be the best rider show. The missteps with the writing Inoue made are honestly the biggest tragedy in how a rider series ended up to me.

I agree with everything you said. I love the character interaction in Faiz. It was amazing. I loved Takumi and Mari's friendship/relationship and Kiba is one of the most sympathetic characters in the franchise. Then you have Yuka who's even more sympathetic.
The suits are Godly and the music, all of it is amazing. The Orphanochs have great designs too and a really interesting gimmick and dynamic.
The ending was absolute garbage but like with Kiva I feel the show has enough good to make me rewatch it again and again.

I didn't realize Core was so hated. I really liked the W part because it gave us more on Skull's backstory and got Akiko and Accel properly hitched.

The OOOs part was pretty forgettable and didn't make a lot of sense (why wasn't the black medal combo a thing?!) and the fight at the end was boring, save for Shotaro freaking out at Ankh.

It was at least worth it for Skull's story.

Man, I remember when we first heard details about Ghost. I had hoped the Eyecons would actually possess him.
For some reason I love the way Liner form is Ryotaro's first personal upgrade. It would have been cool to see that kind of thing again with Boost or Mugen (or something better). I dunno how they could have done it without totally ripping off Den-O though since I haven't seen it yet.
Grateful could have been a different twist on Climax Form with Takeru controlling the body but his powers and abilities being dictated by the souls.

I wish Ghost had actually turned out to be about Takeru traveling through time and the world to meet the actual legendary heroes. Even if the writing wasn't too good it would have been more entertaining than this.

Was that in comparison to the Showa-era shows? I can see that being a complaint, going from one form, maybe a power-up form a la Stronger, to 6 different forms. At least with Kuuga though, his form changes were kept at a minimum, and with each having their own strengths and weaknesses. Then we have, say, Ghost. He's got Billy the Kid, Robin Hood, and Edison, all for a form that uses projectiles. Hell, Beethoven was used twice? Three times, maybe? As opposed to Kuuga, who just had Pegasus/RisingP.

I guess I just want a simpler show. Less flashy form changes, less stupidly catchy belt jingles, better fights, and likeable characters.

I would love to at least see more shows that attempt to replicate the the threat presence of the Grongi. One of the best things about Kuuga is how well it sells the idea of the Grongi actions causing such a consistent degree of dread among society.
