***READ THE GUIDE***

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Just how bad are they really?

I think one anon either in the last thread or the /toy/ thread just built one, and seemed like a pretty good build from what he said.

The earlier kits have less poseability and color separation. They look the part, but they'll require a good amount of touchup painting to look good.

The plastic also feels- Hmmm, how do I say this? -lighter, weaker, or less dense. If you take a Koto part and a Bandai part of about equal size, the Bandai part is heavier.

The newer kits are a lot better as Kotobukiya upped their design and material game.

Continued.

For example, almost every part of the Exexbein model kit is in the color it should be. You'll need to paint a bit of white trim here and there, but it's nowhere close to what you would have to fix up one of the original Huckebein kits.

Seam welding is a really basic technique that you'll probably practice later if you intend to paint ever
It's not so important that you get into it on kits 1&2 but consider it if you ever get a second jim, the potential benefits later, especially if you mess up and break a part are limitless.

Definitely a solid first build though, looking forward to your jesta cannon.

And it won't unless they animate this extra chapter at the very end, and even then it's only a brief, partial glimpse at side 7. Otherwise it only appears as a schematic on screen during a presentation by Tem Ray after the guncannon massacre.
>>
>>14319102
The Revive ver is great. It's a perfect first RX. Or you can wait for the inevitable Origin ver HG.
>>
Do you wash your runners with soap or anything before building? I never have but I'm wondering if it actually helps.
>>
>>14319133
Before building?

No. At most I'll wipe them down with a microfiber but that's only if it's a kit I know I'm gonna spend a lot of time painting.

Before priming?

Yes.
>>
>>14319102
>>14319120
Keep in mind that the Origin ver has a few design differences from the proper RX-78-2 from 0079, so get the Revive if you want the RX-78-2 from the anime, or wait for the Origin ver if you want a slightly different take on it.
>>
>>14319150
Do you just soap up and rinse the whole model and air dry? I'd just be worried about residual water sitting internally.
>>
>>14319183
Yes. Some JPs I've seen use a soft bristle toothbrush to scrub 'em but you can get the same results by just hand agitating them.

If I'm in a hurry, I'll also set the oven to preheat at 420 degrees and toss them in there for sixteen minutes. Dries 'em right up.

I'm joking, by the way. Don't actually put your gunpla in the oven. Or do, see if I care. I don't.

I suppose if you want to make EXTRA sure there's no residual water, put them on your paint rack and stick 'em in front of a dehumidifier and leave it running over night. I've never done it but that's what dehumidifiers are for. Note: This should ideally be done AFTER they've air dry

Generally how risky is it to order gunpla off Amazon that is not fulfilled by it? Been looking at some kits and there are a couple that claim free shipping and have good prices but are not fulfilled by Amazon.

>>14319365
About as risky as ordering from play-asia.

I haven't had problems should something get fucked up.

Once was being sent the wrong kit from an American vendor, got in contact with them and they refunded it and payed for the return shipping.

Second was a case of a kit taking about 3 months and not arriving from a Japanese vendor and getting no reply, filled a claim and got it refunded through Amazon only for it to arrive a week later.

Third was getting the wrong kit from a Japanese vendor, sent a message and got no reply, so sent a claim and got it refunded through amazon.

tl;dr You can file a claim through Amazon and get it refunded amongst other means.
>>
>>14319365
Of you file a reasonable claim, Amazon will reimburse you immediately. If you do it too much, you'll get flagged so be careful.

One time I bought an MG Hi Nu ver Ka and it was missing one small runner, and I notified Amazon and they sent me a new one with expedited shipping

So, since I finished my Sazabi besides the paint, since I don't want to paint while I'm at my parent's place I started working on my Nu Ver. Ka because I don't want to touch any of my HG's until I can paint them and make them look decent enough. It was either the Nu or the Sazabi, and since I worked on the HGUC Sazabi, I decided to go with Nu. Started on the Accessories and am gonna work backwards, so I don't burn out on it.

Question, the best practice for the water decals is to glosscoat it before hand, right? Or is putting them onto the bareplastic ok, before the final dull coat?
>>
>>14320019
>Question, the best practice for the water decals is to glosscoat it before hand, right? Or is putting them onto the bareplastic ok, before the final dull coat?
Always protect with a gloss coat before decals.
>>
>>14320019
Are you a girl?
>>
>>14320041
Ok, cool, was just curious how bad the decals would be on bare plastic, but if that's the best practice, I'll go with that. I know you're supposed to spray on lots of light layers for spray, but with gloss, would that make too much of a bumpy surface, or will they all flatten in the end? I've never used a gloss coat before, only a flat one in everything I've done.

>>14320043

>>
>>14320086
Yes, but what does it matter?

Another question, I sent an email to GGInfinite about my order. I haven't gotten any info back from him, and it's been a week and a half. Should I just accept that my $30 is gone? I heard he was really good with these kinds of issues, but this is kind of ridiculous.

>>
>>14320102

>>
>>14320172

Alright, here's hoping I can get any info from him, or a refund. It's been over 2 months, and now I'm actually concerned since I don't live where I had placed the order originally from anymore. I just don't want to have it sent there and have to deal with any funny business from my old landlady, since she's kind of crazy.
>>
>>14320219
Was there a reason you didn't order from any of the other plamo vendors? Because if something like this happened to me with one of the two or three gunpla vendors in my country I use, I would stick to using amiami, HLJ or mandarake, with the added cost that comes with them.
>>
does anybody have any tips for seamline removal on really really small parts?

I'm talking mostly about weapons such as the 180mm canon that comes with the Ez-SR8 and other small rifles that tend to be two parts, but have the line go entirely around the whole thing into knooks and crannies that are really tough to get some sanding tool into.

I'm worried about sanding down the shapes that actually give some little bits detail.

Red lines are where the seam is on the weapon.

>>
>>14320253

It was just for the P-Bandai Schwalbe Graze in Gaelio's colors. I couldn't find it anywhere else, so I decided on trying GGInfinite, since I heard he was really good at touching base if things happen. So far I've gotten no email back, not confirmation of the order since April 1st. I hope it wasn't some April fool's joke, since I paid him $30 for it, and it's already charged my credit card.

I usualy go with local sellers like Hobby Works, or Lilthingamajogs, or go through Amazon for online orders. This was my first time going through anywhere else, and I'm kinda miffed about it. I haven't tried any of the other selers, mostly because my bank isn't too friendly about foreign currency transactions, and I'm autistic about money management. If I don't know the exact amount I spent, in USD, I get stressed about it. I mean, I figured Paypal would handle the currency exchange, but idk, I prefer to buy from places that I am sure charge only USD, but that's just me.

Future is like magic for clear parts

This came out of the box with a long scratch line down the center and it is now completely gone. Also how did the coat come out so even? Airbrush right? No. I completely dunked the whole piece in future, shook it off while it was on the tweezers, and then put it in a box to sit. I scooted it a bit after 10 minutes so the excess didn't dry on the piece, but that is it. Now it's clear as shit and has no drips or flatspots or anything. MAGIC.

Here's where the kit is right now, just working on some exterior issues. The jet pods didn't line up out of the box so I had to fill the holes (the gray part under the wing is epoxy putty) and once I realized I could put the floor plate on now I had to fix the gap so that's what is going on with the front lip. Happy with the top fin and scoop thing, they were both separate pieces that didn't quite fit because it's a very old kit, so blending them took a couple days.

For this kind of shit you want a set of jewelers files and honestly you should pick up some liquid putty. Often you need to build up AND sand down, not just sand down, especially on complex shapes.

For an example, this pic is of an old kit and some of the pieces had really large differences in height on the seamline, so instead of just sanding them like crazy I glued the pieces and then covered them in liquid putty, let it cure, then worked down from there. if you only sand down, you can only ever bring things to the height of the lowest half. Liquid putty is great for making it really even.

so even though it looks like a mess in the last picture, here's the result. Using the liquid putty helps on more complicated things with edges like guns especially.

no the white parts on the front of the leg is where the dissolved putty is painted on the seams. You basically:

glue the pieces together, let it dry completely, put the liquid putty on top, let that dry, then sand.

I'm really starting to dislike the HG IBO line. It's cheap, yeah, but it's the wrong kind of cheap. I want to feel like I got the most for my buck no matter how much I pay for the kit, and IBO is just disappointing. Weapons and the like removed to be sold as Iron-Blooded Arms (and they're not even color accurate, you still have to paint that shit), not even alternate hands. Hell, there's parts they could easily provide stickers for but they don't. Not to mention, the oversized weapons pull on the wrists and the feet constantly suffer from balance issues (Grimgerde is especially bad).

What the hell were they thinking? Did they just go "mix-and-match gunpla, that's the ticket" and just not care about quality since they sell these for cheap?
>>
>>14320846

Not using too much glue or putty, and then using a knife and/or scriber to clean out the gaps. It's another advantage of the putty stuff, you can still do it while wet.

GN Archer head doesn't look bad on the jack edge, actually.

Mine is still missing most of its parts. I need me a victory Gundam backpack, and I'm waiting for the revive Shiki for its lower body and revive impulse for arms. I might just get the mega Shiki instead though since waiting sucks, not sure.

This is my first time doing a kit bash and it's really bothering me how I'll be shelling out lots of money for each kit when I'll only use a small portion of the each kit. It's painful to be excited about my hobby but also be a poorfag at the same time.

Is the paint supposed to be metallic or glittery, or is it just dust? Also, have you top coated it yet? Looks like it could use some panel lining. The effect part looks nice though, and the colors look pretty neat. Are you gonna do anything to the inner frame?
>>

>>
>>14321874

I feel tempted to buy a HG FA78 Full Armor as my first gunpla. I'll wait a bit before I do so.
>>
>>14321891

Ah, ok, I thought it might just be metallic. Looks good. I'd suggest you do maybe metallic bits, like maybe raised bits, or some inner frame detail panels. Make it less tacky gold, and more blue with gold trim, but that's just my opinion.

As for the topcoat, how are you going to panel line it? Are you going to wash, or acrylic or use a marker? Gloss would probably be best for the former 2 methods, while gloss or matte work for the marker route, since it tends to rub right off with your finger pretty well.

>>

>>
>>14321868
Alex particularly with the rubber shoulder parts really needs a 2.0.

The GPs could really do with 2.0s as well, particularly a strong armed 02 so it can handle the shield.

Wouldn't mind a Kampfer 2.0 to go with a Alex 2.0 either, but I'll probably have to settle for the gogo one.

A Zaku Origin 2.0 would be nice and likely to happen but I'd like to see other things done or redone first, particularly a Zaku 1 2.0 or Gouf Custom 2.0 within the general Zaku sphere.

Really enjoying this, aside from those hands. I really don't like how easy the fingers pop out from each other. Although it looks like it won't pop out when I have it in place, so that might be my saving grace. Sucks though, the articulated fingers are what I love most about this and the Sazabi. I mean the sub is available from Gundaminfo on youtube so I dunno why you'd wade through the dub, but if that's what you like..
IBO is decent. It's alright. It has some flaws, which are exasperated when the wait between episodes is a whole week, but it's still firmly "all right".
Personally, I like it. I liked the ruthlessness, I liked the fact that everything was physical. Even the kind of Wing-y political drama was alright because it was used as an engine to power the PAIN TRAIN of robots trashing other robots.
But if the first three episodes don't have you hype as fuck I don't know what will, son.

All that being said, you should probably go talk in one of the many IBO threads, this happens to be the one for Gunpla/Plamo.

>>14322672
After finishing the snap build I can say honestly that I'm satisfied with the kit as it is, but there's always a few complaints. F2000's subarms pop open the moment you move them, and they don't have that much motion to give as it is. I might try to replace them with parts from the powered powerederedur.
He also doesn't hold his "Dead End G" Giant heat hawk very well, but I feel like that's more of the generic hands he comes with, they weren't meant to hold that shape particularly well.
This might be a problem native to just the F2 but the connector type they use for the upper arm feels way too fiddly. I don't like that it doesn't sit in snug and I'll probably thicken the part to deal with this later, I'd probably be thrilled if I thought the Zaku had ever fielded a Cherno Alpha-esque jackhammer punch, though.
Still a solid kit though, and I like the "I have so many guns I don't even know what to do with them all" feel. The misslepod and beam rifle that attach to the forearms are neat as heck.

>>14322765
The comparison pic makes it seem so.
If you can find it somewhere for a decent price (they're not on amazon for $20 anymore) look into the Super Zaku F2000, you still have all the parts to build the standard F2, but the extra armament and weapons give you a lot of options.

Anons I need your help. I'm assembling my Geara Zulu that I painted (mostly) white and I noticed that the thighs have a bit of a yellowish sheen to them. The other parts don't have this problem and I'm pretty sure it's my gloss coat (future).

Any idea what caused this? To thick a gloss coat?
>>
>>14324816
Did you prime or basecoat? If not, it's probably the green tint leaking through your white.
Another possibility is that the pigments used for your white coats aren't of good quality. Another possibility is that some combination of whatever paints and coats you used aren't reacting well with each other.

In short, we need more information to really understand what's going on here on what you did and what you used, pictures being helpful.
>>
>>14324846
Alright anon here goes: (can't provide pictures right now)
*Used Tamiya light grey primer
*Used Vallejo acrylic white
*Used Future as gloss coat
>>

You should have used Testor's Glosscote.

>>
>>14324872
is testors that good compared to the mr hobby stuff?
>>
>>14324940
No, he's lying to fuck with you.
Testors in general is shitty compared to Japanese hobby crap and Future is the de facto standard of lazy gunpla topcoating.
>>
>>14324852
A part of me wants to be a snob and say that Vallejo's paints are doing it, but all in all it's most likely a future coat that was too thick (which is pretty damn hard to do unless you're dipping your model pieces in it, considering its consistency).
However it could very well just be your lighting playing tricks of the eye on you.
>>
>>14324945
>lazy
Don't be lazy, anon.
>>
>>14324940
>>14324945

Testor's is not bad, but it's definitely not better than Mr. Hobby. Mr. Hobby was made for gunpla. It was made so even 10 year olds can use it. Shit goes on super fine, much moreso than Testors, and is much more forgiving.

I've used Testors quite a bit. And while it works, you also have to watch out because you can't just spray it on. You have to do a light preliminary coat, wait until that sets,t hen do a thicker coat. If you don't do this your panel lines will run because Testors is so much fucking harsher than Mr. Hobby.
>>
>>14324952
Then topcoat and line my gunpla for me.

>>
>>14325754
Add weight to the feet and legs, stiffen the joints up via paint or clearcoat.
>>
>>14325754
I find that back-heavy suits stand more easily if you angle the legs slightly, putting the feet at an acute, nearly right angle to the center of mass. Bend the knees slightly and if the kit has any front to back movement in the waist, reinforce that joint.

This works for alot of kits but the Freedom is more back-heavy than most and RGs aren't known for stability in the first place

animeXtreme on spadina in Toronto has *less* rape prices. Usually about a $10 markup compared to the prices on japanese based sites. It's usually just cheaper to buy online, hlj is cheap, but has to ship from japan, hobbywave has flat $18 shipping to canada, so it's good for large purchases, and amazon canada occasionally has decent prices.

I should mention that the $10 is for HGs. RG is usually closer to a $20 markup IIRC, and it's probably best to forget about getting MGs locally.

Not my oldest, but it's my current oldest model I have out. Found him while cleaning out some Gunpla boxes I had for the move. Saw he was covered in nubs and had no actual panel lining, so I started cleaning up the nubs and doing some panel lines. I've only really done the legs, so I've still got a bit to clean up, but I like him. He's the 2.0 I think?

I think my absolure oldest would be a 00 kit, probably the HG Jinx III A-Laws kit I painted. I had a lot more, but my mom threw out a bunch of my first kits since they were like old NG 1/144 Wing kits.

I had a MG Alex, but I lost him a while ago. I really loved that guy.

>>
>>14326713
I've honestly had nothing but trouble from files. They always seem to scratch plastic in places that I don't want them to, and never actually seem to remove any of the actual nub itself. Maybe you'll have better luck than me, but I've only had luck with sandpaper.
>>
>>14326728
The file I have came from a tamiya tool set I bought after my third kit though I mostly use it to get rid of the bulk of a nub before finishing off with sandpaper. I'm pretty satisfied with it.
>>
We should add micrmesh pads to the guide or whatever as a go-to option for sanding.

I ordered some after someone here was pushing them and they're great.

I can not for the life of me find a round file thin/small enough for tiny holes .8-1.1 mm being ideal. most look like they wouldnt even fit the tips in. want to drill a hole then use it to file a channel like you see for vulcans but for like gun barrels, cable slots, exhaust and intake vents etc.
>>
>>14326815
Yeah, they do, over a comparable sized area. Whether or not that's good for your purchasing power, I dunno.
They go up to incredibly high grit which is nice. I think it caps at 12,000.
They can be used wet, but I've heard complaints about that.

>>14326825
Use a kitchen cutting board and save the money. Just don't be overly heavy with your cutting strokes or you'll fuck up the xacto, but if you're cutting that hard, you're dulling the blade (and possibly damaging your plastic) anyway.
>>
>>14326837
Noted. Think I have a wood cutting board around here. If wood gives you cancer then I'm fucked no matter what.
>>
Got a noob question. I built my first model in over a decade. Use snips to cut from the runner then sanded down, the sanding gave a good polish, but I got some discoloration of the plastic. I think my problem was snipping it right up against the part. Is the secret to snip further back and then cut the excess off with a sharp xacto?

Also what should I get for panel lining? Are the gundam markers worth it?
>>
>>14326849
everything "gives" you cancer these days
>>
>>14326849
Just buy a bamboo cutting board from walmart.
>>
>>14326861
So true, but some things are worse than others.

My desk used to be next to a drawer full of rocks with a sizeable amount of uranium in it, so I'm dead already.
>>
>>14326858
Cut a bit away from the part and then sand/file the excess away. With xactos you run the risk of gouging out parts of the plastic you don't want damaged.

It couldn't hurt to pick up an ultra fine tip black and gray marker set for panel lining.
Panel washes work really well too and aren't very hard. Youtube has a few vids showing how to do those.
>>
>>14326898
So do I cut it with the clippers on the thick part of the runner or the thin bit. In both cases there is a delicate nub there that will snap of the moment you touch it with the paper. I must not be picturing it right.

Fine tip like sharpies? Do I use paint thinner if I mess up?

Cut where the thick part meets the thin bit, away from the gunpla piece. That way, there won't be a noticeable stress mark on the part you're cutting out. Take things nice and easy when sanding things down after that.

GM01 and GM02 gundam fine line markers. They're not like typical sharpies in that gundam markers actually use paint. If you're panel lining bare plastic and mess up you can just rub off the excess with a Q-tip before it dries.

>>14327139
Awesome. After sanding nubs and lining what is the next level? Clear coats? Priming and painting completely?
>>
>>14327158
My current process is smooth nubs out > panel line > decal > top coat. Panel lining can be messy and you don't want to accidentally go over a decal with rubbing alcohol. Topcoat to seal everything in and give the model a specific look.
>>
>>14327158
Sorry, misread your post. Painting details is probably the next easiest thing, followed by clear coating, and a complete paint job would require the most time and effort.

Also, keep in mind you wouldn't do it in that order on a single kit. This is just levels of progression.

Is it worth getting the MG RX-78 Gundam Ver. 3.0 over the older 2.0?

The 2.0 is arguably better than the 3.0.

Is the 3.0 one of those HD color type deals?
>>

The 3.0's design is based off of the 1:1 Gundam statue, and is a bit less sturdy than the anime based 2.0. Think of it as a 1/100 RG Gundam, which is also based off of the 1:1 statue.

No, there is nothing wrong with the 3.0, but it adds new engineering gimmicks like the knee armor and overly complex surface detailing that make it less "anime accurate" than the 2.0. The 2.0 is widely regarded as the best RX-78-2 MG because it improves on the 1.0 and adds a lot of detail while still keeping true to the spirit of the design, and all the additions of the 3.0 are superfluous.

You don't need that first layer if you haven't painted. Denub, sandpaper, wash, decals, setter /softer, then top coat
