I actually much prefer Shining over Burning

Try Burning was one of the laziest things I've ever seen.

Meanwhile Star Build Strike pleasantly surprised me. It's amazing how much different the Build Strike looks without giant wings. Also something finally hooked onto the Strike's chest vents, those always seemed like they were made for that.

I don't dislike the Freedom or anything, but I love the Strike so much, that no other mid series upgrade really felt so dissonant to me. However, it became Mu's mobile suit, so I'm cool with it.

The best mid-series upgrade, imo, was probably the Layzner Mark II Ez8.

I think Gundam 00 handled midseries upgrades pretty damn well, maybe even the best off the top of my head because 00 wasn't even functional proper when they started sortieing it. It didn't even come around because the main gundam got destroyed or they needed a power boost. It had been indev the whole time and was used especially because Setsuna had put the Exia through its paces and straight into the ground.

Worst might be G or SEED, but really any situations where they're like "Well shit, looks like our guy needs some more strength. Why don't you send him the brand new shiny suit we have in the corner there so he can roflstomp again?

I've been watching Mazinger Z and every time they launch the Jet Scrander, I just have a smile on my face. The whole 'Mazinger must fly' arc built up well to its introduction; handling the mid series upgrade quite frankly better than many more modern series.

Gundam 00's mid season upgrades are all fantastic, because they addressed the weaknesses of the originals. Exia lacked range so 00 got more guns. Dynames lacked close combat capabilities so cherubim got the pistols. Virtues shield wasn't quite strong enough by the end if s1 and it lacked melee, so the upgrade fixed that, and Kyrios was just lacking in power, so Arios fixed that.

The original satellite cannon mechanism was so complicated the animators couldn't even get it right. It also led to a really, really awkward toy. Even on the MG, it's super finnicky and puts way too much stress on a single small joint.

The DX's mechanism was probably made simpler to address those problems.

Mazinger Z constantly upgraded throughout the show, Getter G appeared late in the original Getter Robo manga, and Raideen got God Voice late in its own show. Jeeg got upgrades a bunch too.

I think the first one you can quantify as a midseason upgrade were the four Nagahamas, who all got a glut of new attacks and additional reactor power and shit around the middle of their show. The first full robot replacement was Walker Gallier/Gallia from Xabungle.

The best is probably Great Fighbird here. Took a kinda silly looking robot with a flaming chestplate, cleaned up the design a bit by replacing that with Tryder G7 and space shuttle wings and gave us some pretty badass shoulder cannons as well.

Worst of what I've seen would also be from the Brave series, Super Fire Dagwon. Shit's awful.

I always thought the Double X was supposed to have kind of a less refined feel to it. It was one of the handful of Gundams made in the Max Max era of Earth post colony drops. Its less refined design is due to more limited resources. Its odd proportions come from the fact that its made from two salvaged Gundam Xs. The Earth Federation was at one point using it as a stationary deterrent turret (like a WMD), though this is before it was complete.

Huh? They used Jamil's old Gundam X to get the Satellite System (and presumably the Flash System) working, but other then that it's new from the ground up.

The DX's proportions aren't "strange" by any standard definition of that word. The broad shoulders are because it has mounts for the cannons in it. Its arms and legs are fairly standard once you take the reflectors off. The torso is pretty much just GX's with bigger vulcans and two green spots. The head has an X on it because that's the joke.

The DX's lineart looks bad, but that's because Okawara drew it. Look at what he drew for the Leopard for comparison, it looks like somebody stuck a 1/144 head on a 1/100 model.

No, going by SRW it's still so goddamn shitty that it has ONE FUCKING WEAPON. Until BX there wasn't a single game where Sirbine was better than Bilbine.

Neo Byston Well is plotless in most SRWs. When they include it, typically there's some manner of secret that gets you Sirbine on top of all the other Dunbine mechs (occasionally another one will give you Zwauth as well).

The only one to run Neo Byston Well plot or have its characters was Compact 3, where you get shot into the future for like two chapters because... because, you get to keep Sirbine, Shion, and the future version of Silky Mau, and it's never really brought up again afterwards.

And calling it an upgrade is hilarious because in basically every game until BX it was "Aura Cut/Hyper Aura Cut/Hyperer Aura Cut" and all the attacks had 1 Range, meaning it's better to use Bilbine or something that can fucking hit at a range of more than 1 instead. BX gave it more range, but in that one it's still arguably worse than Bilbine due to how combination attacks work and the fact that Bilbine has a bunch of those and Sirbine has none. (OE also gave it more range, but not very much more, and it's generally worse than Bilbine - OE also had Hyper Zwauth. We don't really talk about OE though because it's shit)

I like the Mk.II more, because it's just a machine.

The sort of vibe I get from MSG is that despite being THE best thing on the field, the Gundam is still only supposed to be a machine. Its crimes against physics is not much greater than any of its opponents, and while having stronger than usual armor, a beam shot to the cock pit will still do it in (Unless it is piloted by Kira Yamato). It is not a god machine, nor is it an ancient construct of legend, it's just a stronger than usual robot.

I like seeing MP Gundams like the Mk.II because they follow this theme, and they contrast especially strongly when the series in question has a legendary deity-like Gundam as its flagship (Contrast ReZEL with Unicorn).

That and the thing just looks really good.

Most of those are unimportant Gundams of the week. Burning Gundam is the one used by the protagonist. It's not hard to figure out. That and no one's going to stir up shit over "Dark Gundam" seeing as how that name is almost interchangeable with "Devil Gundam," though I do prefer the former for being one less syllable. Nah, there was nothing like Dragoons.

There weren't cut features, what did happen though is that Destiny's descriptions in the model kits released at the time made it seem much stronger than what it was portrayed in the show. The Palma Fioccina was said to be a cannon able to one shot battleships, the Wings of Light give it speed on a different level from any other mobile suit, in addition to using Mirage Colloid to confuse the enemies with the after-images. The side beam cannon also was described as having both extremely high battlefield class firepower -and- high firing rate.

In the end though, in the show itself, the Palma Fioccina becomes a melee weapon that gets destroyed by beam sabers, the side cannon is basically the same as the freaking -Strike's-, without any extra power or speed noticeable, and the wings, like you say there, don't seem to do anything for the speed, with the mirage colloid after-images being rather useless.

Both EVOLT upgrades were great. Hayate's debut was amazing, and the buildup to Mugen was good, with the MUGEN symbol flashing the episode beforehand and shit. The show did a good job showing off all the side character upgrade too, come to think of it.
