Okay so Im off a few minds here.

On the one hand the parameters of the test made it justifiable for him to beat Mirage AND for her to kick his ass. And she did. By all accounts he'd have been dead immediately and was only saved because it was a test. So that's good.

On the other hand Freya's song hax seemed in all honesty kind of bullshitty, but Im guessing that's gonna be a bigger plot deal so gonna put a pin on that and wait and see.

Some follow up. So, Hidetaka Tenjin did a panel on Macross and on drawing mecha today at a US convention. I took notes during the lecture part because it was full of amusing anecdotes. I’m not /m/ enough to know all the series he was talking about working on, so there will probably be some errors.

Hidetaka began the panel by introducing himself in English. (He speaks pretty conversational English – a friend and I went to an autograph signing with him yesterday and he chatted briefly about Delta with us.) He asked if anyone in the audience had seen Macross Delta. About a third of the room raised their hands. He laughed and said “How!” and seemed happy and amused. Then he switched to speaking in Japanese for most of the rest of the panel.

He started off talking about the work he’s done on Gunpla box art. He mentioned that he doesn’t have a lot of freedom when he draws Gunpla box art, but he likes to compose the art in a way that makes someone think about a certain scene. Bandai (“Bandai-san”) always has very specific requests that are basically “impossible” – he used the example of what I think was Shin Matsunaga’s Zaku II, and Bandai wanted the whole mech to show, and the shoulder emblem to show, and the Zaku to be beating up another machine but without blocking the Zaku at all.

He mentioned that he’s “old school” and thinks that shiny mechs don’t belong on the battlefield. He mentioned that because of some game, Japanese kids don’t want to pilot Gundams, they want to be the Gundams, so now mechs have to be pika pika.

He spoke about working on a piece of Bandai with Sayla and the Core Fighter for a realistic art series, and Bandai didn’t have many specific requests for the Core Fighter, but it had a lot of specific requests about Sayla’s figure, especially her chest.

He showed some art from Votoms, Patlabor (he was really happy that more than half the audience were Patlabor fans because he’s a big fan; because he’s such a big fan, he drew all the characters he could fit on the BD box art), Aquarion Evol (I had a hard time following this, but when the mech from Eureka Seven was shown it was so similar to the mech from Evol that Kawamori jokingly asked “Did you show them our drafts?”), Dunbine (he’s fon of fantasy so he likes Dunbine), Kamen Rider, Glaiolus (??? I had no idea what this was), Starhawk (Sony USA gave him a long list of instructions for the box art. For the box art, they wanted the main character, who has a really scary face, so he had a hard time with that, and because the box art had such a scary-faced guy he thought the game wouldn’t sell in Japan), Saint Seiya (he was an image board artist for the 3D computer graphics series; he was a big fan and was honored. He also voices the first guy who gets beat up by Ryuusei’s Pegasus in the movie), Danboard (he drew art for it once and his first attempt was rejected because “Danboard is not cardboard”).

Then it was on to Macross. For the DRYL BD cover, he put in “so much detail that I wore out my hand,” but he was happy because it’s his “best loved show.” He showed a picture of a Macross-class ship (again, I’m not /m/ enough to tell which one) and mentioned that model makers hate when the face of the mech isn’t showing, but he thinks that forcing the picture to show the face looks silly from some angles and is a dated way of drawing. He likes to draw human figures, too! He showed a picture of a crashed Valk from some Frontier BD box art and talked about how although the Valk’s wings are broken, he drew the clouds behind the Valk to look like it was regenerating the wings, to show his hope that Frontier would live on.

Some more series: Yamato, Gunhead, Astro Boy, Eva, Dororo, a Singaporean line called “Armor Loaders” (he mentioned that the rest of Asia is getting into producing its own toys). He does corporate ads sometimes (he showed a picture of… I don’t know, it looked like a battleship? People thought that this ad was a photograph and not art, even though his signature is on it. The ad won awards) and sometimes draws motorcycles. He talked about Garo for a bit (but not for long, because there was a separate Garo panel the previous day).

He loves Star Wars and has been drawing it a lot for the last two years. A lot of the Bandai kits have his art on them. When he was working on the box art for the new X-Wing, he was given very few reference images, which is why the box art has a made-up scene that isn’t in the movie at all. He spent three weeks drawing art for a Millennium Falcon kit (they didn’t tell him who would be onboard!). Kylo Ren is hard to draw because of his fabric. Bandai was set to release a Captain Phasma figure quite late; other toy companies didn’t know that Phasma would have such a small part in the movie, and he thinks they lost money on Phasma toys (the implication being that Bandai didn’t because its Phasma release was scheduled for later and they knew how many to make?). I should have been writing this down as he showed the art, but I think he showed his work on the classic X-Wing, new X-Wing, the Falcon, classic Stormtroopers, Phasma, and either and AT-AT or an AT-ST.

There was one piece of art where he had his dad pose so that he could draw the character looking “authentically middle-aged” – I think it was Goto from Patlabor, but my notes about that are out of order so I can’t be sure.

Then he spent ten or fifteen minutes giving a demonstration of how he goes about drawing a piece of art. (Give the clients a few rough compositions, then line art, then shading, then detailing piece by piece.)

He took a few questions during Q&A. One question asked how many projects he usually worked on at a time and how long projects usually took; he said it depended on the timeframe the customer gave, but usually probably five projects, and the shortest he’s ever worked on a project was four days (which he jokingly said he’s “never forgiven” the client for). Another question asked, when he was designing transforming mechs, did he think about “a jet that turns into a robot” or “a robot that turns into a jet” first; he graciously said that no, Kawamori designs the mechs (I think he said Kawamori starts with a jet and thinks about how to turn it into a mech, but for some reason I wasn’t taking notes during Q&A, this part is from memory). The next question asked for advice for young illustrators switching back and forth between drawing people and mechs; he jokingly asked “Transforming people?” but then said that young artists should realize that there isn’t a hard divide between people and mechs, because people have things like glasses and watches on them and those are basically mechs. (I wonder if we should be worried about Roid’s glasses.) I got the last question, asking what his favorite Delta mech was, to which he cheerfully patted his arm and said that it was the Macross’s left arm because he designed it. He also mentioned that he designed the characters’ emblems, though I have no idea whether that means things like like the markings on the Drakens or Messer and Cat Guy’s emblems or what.

Overall it was a really fun panel. He seemed to love talking about his work and to have a good sense of humor. He was also chatty and gracious during his autograph session. If he speaks at a location convenient to you, I recommend going to listen to him. Even though I hadn’t watched some of the things he was talking about, his enthusiasm was just infectious.

Frontier's music was really hit-and-miss for me, I only really liked one or two songs (Houkago Overflow is fantastic) and hated a lot of them (mostly Sheryl's stuff) but so far I've loved all of Delta's.

MDE stuff appears to have only been widespread in Frontier for Vajra combat, so probably only the Frontier fleet and SMS stationed there were using MDE ammo and whatnot. They also used heavy quantum beam gunpods on the VF-27 and YF-29, which were similar to MDEs and the super dimensional cannons on Macross class ships too. They've never used laser gunpods as far as I know, but the VF-4 Lightning and VF-11 Thunderbolt both had beam gunpods too, and there may have been others as well. They weren't heavy quantum beam gunpods and we've no idea what the beams were made out of to my knowledge, but they had them.

I'm actually waiting for Mirage to resonate with Freyja's song as well, like Hayate did. The two of them resonate with Freyja's song and become an ultimate wingman duo, dancing through the aerial battlefield... It would fit so well with the more "friendship triangle" feel that they are going for this time.
