Transformers, Voltron, Robotech are things that most people have seen. Gundam Wing is borderline, maybe Gurren Laggan if you really stretched. That's about it. I've never seen anyone outside of 4chan discussing Code Geass. Macross Frontier never even had an official release.

I saw a lot of discusion on local anime forums (even more than gurren lagann) and crunchyroll when it was airing. It's hard to have a concrete source on actual popularity, but it is rated high on My Anime List.

Talking about only American POV and the aforementioned criteria does not show the whole picture.
The franchises you have mentioned are the one who got broadcast as cartoons and remembered for that, not as an anime. And Death Note Live action movie had been in dev hell for such a ling time that not many care anymore and already a reboot live action just got made in Japan.
The "normie" I am talking about the one who spend time on social media sites and also casually download stuff. And among them Code Geass along with Death note is the first taste of that anime blood. Hence, making CG normie as any casual anime watcher.

I've talked to someone who doesn't like mecha yet love Gurren and their logic is that it's a tribute that strives to be better than what it's paying tribute towards while successfully doing so even though they wouldn't know that since they absolutely refuse to check out what it's paying homage too since it strives and successfully topped what it's a homage to. Yeah, about Dragonar, I know it's not complex in terms of what it is, but did it get translated or something? Last I checked it was still one of the hardest things to get into due to the language barrier and it not being very good to begin with. It's higher than Space Dandy which freaking aired on Adult Swim. It's at least as inaccessible as Cybuster.

My friends and I at /m/subs are working on translating it, we just released episode 18 recently. It's not that hard, it's just that our translators are a little busy. It was released in Italian, actually, so that makes it a little easier. We're making progress, but UK Windom is also working on other stuff right now, and I haven't had much luck in getting in touch with my Italian translator, Gorgewall. I sent him an email recently, I hope he responds...

Anyways, I'd say the show is pretty good in terms of quality. It's lighthearted and quite funny. I'd say its biggest problem is that it's a little derivative, it's very easy to tell it was made to capitalize on Gundam's popularity. But on its own it's pretty solid, IMO.
