There is some debate over that. Most of the sources about the creation of the manga are untranslated, so there is a shit ton of /m/ folk lore that frankly I don't trust.

Something along the lines that Getter robo was originally supposed to be a power armor thing, and Ken got talked into making a three way combiner by go nagai, or something. Like I said it's all sourceless.

He suggested sonething, then the publisher heard Nagai suggested something, since he was famous already his name was used to promote getter. Since Nagai has never produced anything remotely as good as Getter he hasn't protested the mention, its his legacy.

I've heard that on the first full moon of the year, Go Nagai will transform into Devilman and lurk through the night, giving advice to other mangaka. Supposedly Ishikawa was seeking that advice which broke the sacred agreement of Uncle Go visiting people by chance and they had to fight. However, Ishikawa's creative battling style gave pause to Go just before he struck a mortal blow. Go offered to spare his life but Ishikawa made the daring decision to bet Nagai's advice on the victor of the battle. Go accepted, and realized a moment too late that the sun was rising, changing him back into his human form. He realized he was bested in wits so he declared Ishikawa the winner. What words of advice were given that night may never be known, but we do know that the first drafts of Getter Robo appeared the next day.

It's in Ishikawa's mini comic series about Getter's origins. Toei wanted Nagai to make a new series with the themes of robot, due to Mazinger Z's success, and transformation, due to Kamen Rider's success.

Go Nagai, Ken Ishikawa and some random people got into a car pileup in a parking lot one night after drinking. Right there, Go Nagai came up with the idea of a robot that was formed via combining cars. He then promptly told Ishikawa to handle the project, because he wanted Ishikawa to make his official debut as a mangaka.

Ishikawa struggled with the concept, but came up with a series called Change Getter Three about robots formed from cars that had three pilots. Ishikawa, however, couldn't figure out how to make the transformation realistic and was at his wits' end. Nagai then told Ishikawa not to worry about being realistic since it was a manga which allowed Ishikawa to create Getter as we know it.

That pretty much sums up Nagai's involvement, though Nagai did also design Emperor Gore. The rest is Ishikawa. Nagai had no involvement in the actual serialization of the manga, either.

A lot of mangaka get their career starting as the assistant to someone else.

Oda was originally Watsuki's assistant for Rurouni Kenshin, and now Oda has the most popular manga in the world.

Go Nagai was obviously an influence on the art early on in the manga, since the character designs looked more Nagaiesque before Ishikawa applied his signature style to it.

To which I say, yeah no shit. Is it really that surprising that a guy who spent years as an art assitant to someone would instinctively draw in the style he had been already drawing for a while?
