The story and the characters? That's fine, but mecha and robots play a key role in how the story plays out and how the characters interact with one another. If someone watching a mecha show is like "I don't really like this robot stuff, but this show is really good" then I won't fault him for it, but I'd be curious as to why he has no intrest in the mecha stuff if the story involves it so heavily.
