They might have been basing it on a Gamma Ray Burst, which is powerful enough to blast away the atmosphere if and cause an extinction level event on any planet in it's path for thousands of light years. It wouldn't explode people as far as I know, but the proximity and focus of the weapon probably let them feel free to take some liberties.

It's still Luna sleeping with a guy she thought killed her sister, which is gonna be creepy and stupid no matter how it's done. That said, some doujins can be rather good about character development stuff. Macross Frontier has at least one good one for Sheryl/Alto in that category too.

Well Shinn was only doing his duty as a soldier so she blamed Athrun and LOGOs for what happened. So yeah, awkward, but somewhat rationalized. I felt Shinn and Luna should have been together early on, so at least it finally happened even if it was in an obtuse way.

Also when characters don't get any real development, of course doujins are going to have a chance to shine since it's the old adage of giving a million monkeys with a million type writers. It's just certain series set the bar a lot lower.
