In reality, I don't think it would work like this. The Zakus wouldn't be able to dodge the tank rounds. The tanks would hit the zakus easily because the zakus have a huge tall frame where the tanks have a much smaller one.

It's just fiction though, so it's best to just try and enjoy it.

There's a reason why WWII is the golden age of tank designs, anon.
The designs are much more different due to different tank doctrine and everything, its not like modern MBTs that samefags hard because same combat doctrine and everything.
The americans at the time didn't think of using tanks to fight tanks, the brits only used their cruiser tanks to fight other tanks, the germans loved using their tanks to fight other tanks, the russians does the same on top of zergrushing their enemy.

Well, they don't have much incentives to use them.
They could use them for attacking, but the asian countries had shit for anything that requires a tank at the time. As for defence, it would only happen if the air and naval forces fell, so there wasn't exactly a point to fund and develop tanks as opposed to putting that time and money into ships and planes.

They apparently had some crazy designs and at one time got a Tiger from Germany but that Tiger never made it to Japan.

>>

It's better as far as action goes than almost every mecha show to come out in at least the last ten years, so clearly there are better options.
>>
>>14229924
Not OP, but...
>Lower center of weight
>Less surface to be armored
>The weight of the whole thing is more spread out by the threads than what two legs could do, meaning that a tank could move in places where a mech would sink through the ground
>Lower profile, meaning it is harder to spot and harder to shoot at than a multi meter walking tank
>Doesn't need a new super powered power plant that is also light, nor it needs any materials that would be hard yet very light, nor does it need as much mechanisms inside itself than a robot leg or arm

And due to the second point a tank would end up lighter/faster than a mech with similar amount of armor.
>>
>>14230895
"Giant" robots are impractical, we've been through this a lot of times.

Small scale robots(3-5 metres in height?) or powered armor is certainly possible and theoretically more practical in some cases, like urban environments.

Bitch those tanks were in the woods.
Could a multi meter mech had been able to conceal itself like that and start a surprise attack?

>>
>>14230928

I get your point but not your wording
>>
>>14230938
X surprised Y because X wasn't essentially a flying tank on stilts being a massive attention whore letting the whole world know of its existence.

It's easier to surprise someone by being more silent and more concealable than the other guy.
Making yourself more noticeable on purpose just makes you easier to surprise and stab in the dick.

Tanks are impractical in urban environments in general.
Robots, even 5 meters would be impractical as well because it just doesn't move around well and are prone to surprise attacks because of the nature of urban warfare.

The main "advantage" mechs supposedly always have is their maneuverability, because writers don't realize tanks aren't just clunk walking bulletbags. A real life mech wouldn't be that maneuverable and legs will always be horribly inefficient.
>>
>>14228874
At the speed those shells are flying they wouldn't know they were being shot at until its too late.
>>
>>14231335
>even 5 meters would be impractical
Which is why scaling it down to 2-3 is a possibility?

>it just doesn't move around well
With our current technology, that is. The first tanks were slow as fuck, now they are moving at 70km/h despite being several times heavier.

Remember, this is all very hypothetical, we don't even know what will be the next "meta" for modern weaponry.
Powered armor is a very likely thing, and them upscaling powered armor a little to carry bigger guns and whatnot is a possibility.
>>
>>14231361
At that point you're shoving a whole lot of tech into a small body, it just doesn't work that well.
And at 2 meters if you want a person inside there its just going to be a power suit. Even 3 meters is too small to really do anything with other than put a person on stilts.

>doesn't move well
it just won't move as fast period. Bipedal things just aren't that effective for movement. They'll always be slower than wheels or treads and more prone to slip ups due to imbalanced and weight distribution.

Large power armor is a possibility, but once they go beyond infantry level it gets shit on again because our firepower is just too much to make protection for.
>>
>>14231377
>a whole lot of tech into a small body
And that is why the shrinking of those tech is a thing? Let's be serious, why would you give a hypothetical infantry powered armor the ability to take a hit from, say, a tank's gun?
Being able to stop most infantry-killing things like standard rifle calibre bullets and shrapnel would be the bare minimum.

>it just won't move as fast period. Bipedal things just aren't that effective for movement.
That's assuming its moving on legs. Powered armor could be moving around with wheels like roller blades most of the time and only moving with legs when needed. The "legs" could be a glorified suspension for the wheel(s) below. There could be a third "leg" that helps with the balancing, for instance.
>>
>>14231416
The issue is more what would you want on it that makes it worthwhile to surround a person in a giant technological shell?

Radar? Cameras? Wifi? Missiles?
What justification is there for it? If its just protection then at the very least you'd need EMP shielding to prevent them from just getting trapped in giant hunks of metal, and that by itself takes up space and weight. Then you'd need some form of mechanical movement assistance.
Plus to make the shielding worthwhile you'd at least have to let it tank a grenade and small explosives as those are one of the bigger issues.

>legs
point is there is very little time when legs would ever be more efficient, so little you'd have a hard time justifying having them there at all, let alone them being the default.
And if you're going to have a 2 meter tall armored thing that doesn't look like a person and moves on wheels.
That's called a car.

Misqouted, it was meant for >>14228889

The Hildolfr is a perfect example of why mobile suits are the future. Because look at how the Hidolfr took down the 6 Zakus. Shot 2 in the back while they were unaware, 1 while the pilot stopped when he panicked after being shot by an incendiary round, 1 because the pilot froze up after the Hildolfr transformed. 1 by a point blank scatter shot after it got knocked to the ground, and 1 being shot down by machine gun fire.

5 of the 6 kills were because of the mobile suit pilot errors and not the Hildolfr itself. Although having the Hildolfr piloted by an artillery instructor did allow it to preform much better than in the hands of a normal pilot.

Also keep in mind, the Hildolfr could only score kills with artillery when the enemy was unaware or nearly immobilized. During the initiate attack after the first Zaku got destroyed, the 2nd Zaku was able to move enough to have the impact only cause negligible damage to one of the power cables in the head.

Could the Hildolfr have a role in the Zeon Forces? Absolutely. Would it be the lead attacker or does this somehow vindicate tanks in battle? Absolutely not.
>>
>>14231763
>My cherry picked example from a mech show that conveniently ignores important aspects of physics and engineering is why mechs are the future
>>
>>14231763
Isn't the Hidolfr from a series where a magic particle prevents radar and long range missiles from functioning? That universe needs a fictional handicap to even give mecha a fighting chance so that's a pretty poor example.

First off, it's a walking motion, not just a heavy object bulldozing through and creating a solid path. So even if the path is mucky, a mobile suit should have enough power to just walk through it. If the ground started to give way and the pilot was alert. He'd activate his thrusters to get the stuck foot out of the irregular terrain, or if the entire area gives up, use his boosters to jump out of the area.

And outside of a few guntank variants, tanks never took a major role in battles for the rest of UC. So yeah, I basically threw threw you tankfags a bone by going into detail as to why the Hildolfr was effective in its one sorte. Buy yeah, the project was scraped because it wasn't seen as practical with how much success mobile suits were having, so here we are.

In the new movie, it was because they had force shields that prevented damage. You can't take out something if an invisible barrier prevents all damage from reaching the moist unguarded good bits.

In fact, would mechas be more feasible or less when we develop the tech for nearly impenetrable force shields that are projected an inch or so over the surface of the mech's body?

less because you could just put that shit on a tank and not have to train people in an entirely new weapon system and mode of operation, and also not have to make entirely enw logistical chains, MOS's, and all the other shit required for a weapon system to work in complete synchronicity within the armed forces.

A tank can't cross a river. It can't fly over a city. It doesn't have maneuverability, here it can shoot them because it's far away and they are just staying there in the open, but if they started dodging and moved they would have it very complicated. A tank cannot fly in space. So in this very particular example, maybe, just maybe, you are right; they do need the help of the robot's pilots, of course, who just stare there willing to be slaughtered instead of MOVING THE FUCK OUT of the way.

APS already have a "Double Tap" mode where they can quickly engage both parts of the projectile.

The two part RPGs were created to deal with Explosive Armor, not APS.
>>
>>14235184
Except something like the RPG-30 had been designed with earlier forms of APS such as Arena and Drozd already in mind. Double tap APS is kinda of a new thing.

It's kinda surprising, armor for once might actually be outpacing infantry-based anti-tank weapons. Layering so much forms of protection on actual modern MBTs means you have to make bigger more badass missiles that might be too clumsy for boots to lug around properly.

If you look at the number of rounds coming in at the stasi TSF and the high volume of fire which went on for several seconds then there are easily over 100 tanks in the forest.

More then a tank regiment, each tank battalion have 40 tanks and there are 3 battalions in a regiment.

Actually the money spent don't mean much.
- Air-fighter are needed
- It is more costly to make one
- It is insanely costly to make one that will survive Next-Gen anti-air defense.
The same can be said for attack copter.

And we are in a time of peace (sand fanatic don't count), come the next war and you'll be much more careful sending supersonic-VTOL-deathtrap over enemy lines.

> And if you're going to have a 2 meter tall armored thing that doesn't look like a person and moves on wheels.
That's called a car.

Who said it had to be humanoid and who said it couldn't be worth it ?

Tank are hardly the penultimate in cross country ability. They were built for niche purpose (trench) and stayed on the frontline because they were hard to kill. Now they are on life-support and only anti-missile system could save them.

You only need a doctrine of "shoot first, from anywhere" to make power armor to mechs interesting. Adding wheels to them would simply make them superior than old design
>>
>>14236175
>In mid battle almost everyone already know your position anon, so why fucking bother?
Not even close to true. Stop taking your ideas of combat from fucking anime.

Visible = dead. Armour hasn't been as powerful as the tools available to punch through it since WW2.
>>
>>14238139
>Adding wheels to them would simply make them superior than old design
You do realize there are actual reasons tanks don't use wheels, right? Treads are used A) because they're better on uneven terrain than wheels and B) because they spread the pressure out more evenly.

Anything with even vaguely a tank, or god forbid an MS's weight would sink like a fucking stone in any form of difficult terrain.
>>
>>14232878 >>14232903
Depend, how do the impenetrable force shield interact with the ground ? If the tank can't shield itself because it would push against every structure taller than itself, you have a good reason to walk on thin legs

anyway, such tech would redefine our understanding of science so much we might as well have the ability to teleport bomb within enemy HQ if that happened..

>>14238146
Because they can't switch to walking in an heartbeat ?

> Anything with even vaguely a tank, or god forbid an MS's weight would sink like a fucking stone in any form of difficult terrain.

That's a childish argument that was never true. Nice goalpost run by the way.

Do the math, tank use tracks because they naturally have a far from ideal geometry for locomotion, track are large because most of it don't push actively on the ground, but ironically the larger track also give them a poor adherence. When a tank hit a slope it's low center of weight barely help.

Walking locomotion rely on changing your geometry constantly, you can't get bogged down unless the bog actively weight you down and your feet digging slightly into the ground give you an ideal adherence. A 100tons mechs would have no problem moving around with even a quarter of a tank's surface. And a 30tons gun could take a 150mm tank gun recoil with no anchor.
>>
>>14238141
In future when combat scanner and radar are advance enought, why not?

Also, mid battle means there is firefight going on, and enemy basically already guess the accurate possibility of your position judging by the noice and flashes. So since we talking about driving machine, all it care about now is quick enought maneuvering.

If you talking about recon or flanking, then the battle not even begin for that unit yet. And if the pilot even bother to done that kind of maneuver, then he is an idiot and he already dead anyway.

>Visible = dead

If you alone and doing recon/scout, then yes
>>
>>14232365
>Yeah use the boosters to jump out of the area and give his squad's position away. Great idea.
Minovsky scattering means even if the engagement starts, the odds of accurate strikes at range is very very low.
>>
Why don't we just attach a pair of legs to a tank and make it able to launch nukes?
>>
>>14228897
To be fair, Stasi wasn't known for taking to the front lines so they probably were hilariously incompetent.
>>
>>14229841
Technically, TSFs Are air power.
>>
>>14238141
Simply firing a weapon a weapon can give away your position and while stealth is all well and good, hiding infantry on the ground is way easier than hiding a plane in flight.

Thus, if visible=dead then infantry is the king of battles.
>>
>>14238402
Less a matter of stealth, more a matter of concealment. Think about camouflage, while you might have the vague idea that of your position, exactly where to shoot isn't so clear. And yes, infantry is very difficult to uproot from an entrenched position without specific weaponry to deal with them. A fleshy meatbag is vulnerable to wide area weaponry whereas an even moderately armored vehicle is not.
>>
>>14238436
Which then brings us to the concept of powered armor, the most plausible of mecha.

Honestly, I wish there were more animes like Red Eyes and Madox
>>
>>14238385

The director of SM is supposedly on record for saying that he purposely made them look bad because he thinks that a competent enemy faction based off a real-life policing organization would trigger people.

I couldn't make this shit up even if I tried.

Whatever may be the case, the pro-Soviet Stasi spend the finale of the novel run butchering opponents left and right before they end up surrendering after their leader is killed, in stark contrast to the anime rendition.

Well, not much to expect when they pour money into making short series as really expensive advertisements for VNs. Any publicity is good publicity, was that how it went?

IRL the Italians were the ones that had propaganda about their awesome walking machines and who used twin-seated mini subs to good effect.
And the French are the ones who really max out the "PUT the BIGGEST GUN on the SMALLEST AND FASTEST THING WE GOT"-logic in their armoured vehicles today.
