I wouldn't really say it WORKS.

The ova was extremely forgettable aside from a few choice scenes and the ending. The story and characters just weren't fleshed out enough and the actual battle scenes were extremely bare bones, static, and repetitive. Barely any movement at all with the same attack being used to end the fight repeatedly. The soundtrack was good at least.

That was cool and I enjoyed the differences between the anime. I like how the anime kept most of the important bits while at the same time being almost completely different.

It's also pretty cool how the heroine gets DPed by tentacles inside the cockpit.

The original Iczer manga isn't even by Hirano, it's by Arai Ren. You can find the Lemon People raws on Sadpanda if you want to look at them, it's in the 1983-10 and 1983-11 issues. I'm pretty sure there's nothing beyond those two chapters and they're exactly the same thing as the first episode of the OVA anyway, except Iczer-1 is literally a catgirl (and Cobalt is a man, maybe? I can't quite tell).

Hirano made the OVA based on those two chapters, and later both Hirano and Arai made some new manga, but I think they never finished anything.
