Aside from the girl who took him in and appreciates him straightening out her messy apartment, he also consistently has one male friend, a dad that needs him very badly (albeit in a twisted way, but it's the best the Ikari family is capable of as fucked up as they all are), his actual Eva piloting skills which are almost objectively better than his two teammates, a place in society in the form of school, and the knowledge that he literally saves the world every time he deploys. It might be a thankless job, but I know I'd still get some satisfaction out of it. Seriously, it's not like Shinji is D-Boy and is forced to kill his family, lose his memories and degrade his body at a cellular level every time he deploys, and it's also not like he's the only person capable of doing anything. He has a bit more positivity in his life than that.

By actually sharing his feelings with the people I mentioned. Yeah, I get it, there's the whole hedgehog's dilemma bullshit, but he's clearly in a bad state as things are, and he isn't going to move out of it unless he makes a change. And in the same vein, he should have been more decisive. If he wanted to leave NERV, he should have. If he wanted to stay, he shouldn't have tried to run away. Being conflicted doesn't accomplish anything but making him look pathetic since we all know he's just going to get back in the cockpit anyway or else we wouldn't have a show.

I appreciate characters with one or two flaws, but Shinji just had one too many in my eyes.

Shinji consistently gets better throughout the show, becoming more confident and assertive and culminating in him taking the lead on the shadow Angel, while pushing both Asuka and Rei back, because he's so sure he can handle it. Which backfires massively, traps him in his own personal hell for hours on end and fucks him up all over again. After which he's not really able to take that confident stance anymore and Shinji can't escape his depression anymore since everything he thought he had is gone and he's disillusioned about the entire process. Plus, everything else kind of goes to shit anyways, so it doesn't matter.
