Why was Showa Godzilla so bad after the original? Is it just the general rule of Showa toku being bad in general or did they just try to squeeze as much money out of the character as they could?

Went too kid-friendly. No, it doesn't have to be as dark as the original, but this is too far in the other direction.
>>
>>14189216
Was popular, made money, audiences didn't want serious shit anymore, nor did the studio higher-ups. Then the movie industry went to absolute shit in general.

Because the original was an allegory on the horrors of nuclear warfare meant to illustrate the devastating effect THE BOMB had on civilians who had nothing to do with the war.

>>14191796
It's Kaiju Eiga.
>>
>>14192010
>Kaijū (怪獣 kaijū?) (from Japanese "strange beast")[1] is a film genre that features monsters, usually attacking a major Japanese city or engaging other monsters in battle. It is a subgenre of tokusatsu (special effects-based) entertainment.

>Related terms include kaijū eiga (怪獣映画 kaijū eiga?, monster movie), a film featuring giant monsters or a single monster; kaijin (怪人?, referring to roughly humanoid monsters); and daikaiju (大怪獣 daikaijū?, giant kaiju), specifically meaning the larger variety of monsters.

>>
>>14189216
Weren't the first 2 or 3 sequels rather close in tone to the original? I guess by the time of Ghidorah you had Mothrah going around translating kaiju speak, but it was still toned down compared to later Showa movies.
>>
>>14192712
First (Godzilla Raids Again) tried to keep the tone, but it was surface-level at best because it was a rushed sequel.

Second sequel, King Kong vs. Godzilla was full-blown comedy campy cheese.

Third, Mothra vs. Godzilla was the only one of the first few sequels that tried to be serious, but since Mothra got involved, it was more of a fun fantasy monster movie.

I'm not sure it is, but it's possible that the spooky grin face is a comic version of (Ambassador Phantom of the Planet) Krankor
>>

Krankor is totally supposed to be a thinly veiled proxy for Whitey. Long nose, moustache the fact that he comes from another culture and wants to take over the world or Japan.

neat
I love evil white guy characters, they're loads of fun. Like back when Jeff Jarrett was working in Mexico, he'd come out throwing tortillas at the crowd.
>>
>>14193654
It's the same for Astro-Boy, they couldn't have obvious media that was remotely militaristic or anti-American after we came in and re-molded their culture and disarmed them. So they did it in this manner where it was veiled and less obvious. Hell being associated with old propaganda was such career poison that if it wouldn't have been for his toku work on Godzilla Eiji Tsuburaya wouldn't have had a career.

Does anyone know of a site where I can watch subbed Godzilla movies? If I go digging around I can find dubbed versions, but those always drive me up the wall when they've got one or two bad VAs, or worse, an adult trying to dub a fucking kid.
>>
I like a lot of them. Remember that Ishiro honda himself directed some of the odder entries in the series. I think after the first one Honda felt they had said their piece on that, and felt free to do different kinds of movies with Godzilla. He did satire with King Kong vs. Godzilla, magical realism with Mothra vs. Godzilla, sci-fi fantasy with Invasion of Astro Monster, weird art film/social commentary with All Monsters Attack.
>>

the og movie is hardcore commentary about the a-bomb, and also peoples terror at discovery following the invention of the atomic bomb

one of the characters represents a scientist who's dead set on wanting Godzilla to stay alive so mankind can study and learn from it, and he resents the living shit out of everyone who wants to kill it because they're afraid it'll fuck with the status quo

on the other hand is Serizawa who wanted to invent new shit for the good of mankind but in his work creates the oxygen destroyer which he is terrified mortally of it's discovery as a weapon.

In the end Serizawa dies with godzilla to prevent knowledge of both the oxygen destroyer and godzilla from being learned at large, and preserves the peaceful status quo for his normie loser friends. The vanity of Serizawas death is open to interpretation by the viewer.

If we're talking Kamen Rider, Kuuga is probably better than any Showa era KR, even though I do like Showa.

You cherrypicked Family Guy and you know it. There are plenty of great cartoons on nowadays. To keep the "genre" of cartoon consistent, though, let's compare the better "animated sitcoms about a family" from today and back in the day. Bob's Burgers and The Flintstones, maybe? Now Showa fags are getting really salty that you actually defend something like this

Not all franchises are created equal buddy. Many Showa toku series were masterpieces and pioneers of their genre. Showa Godzilla after a certain point was a painful farce that you're trying to portray in a favorable light because the actors slapped each other awkwardly.

Yeah no shit, the initial intent with Heisei was to bring Godzilla back to the original serious tone while still maintaining some Showa elements like him fighting other monsters. The minute they tried to go full Showa with Mothra and Spacegodzilla is when they fucked it up hard and needed to salvage and put a lid on things with Destoroyah.

If Heisei Godzilla was so good why did it fail in these areas:
The 1993 proposed Godzilla anime, animated by the group who did the original Tenchi OVA, failed.
Why did it spawn Gojiland and Godzilla Island?

Ha!
>>
>>14198865
Yes, in Ultraman, there was barely any bleeding, I think only the time Chandlar bit RedKing and Dorako getting shot in the shoulder is the only accounts of blood.
>>
>>14198893
I was trying to go more for a, kids will use their imagination and add blood anyway. Or maybe just me when I was a kid.
>>
>>14198957
It's a mixed bag dependent upon how much a shows creators trust kids to be capable of making a conscious decision in regard to where violence and its' place are. This put into contrast to what a few bad examples (in both what is shown/how kids react) can be the deciding factor in how far violence extends. That and understanding your audience and catering to the people in it. E.g. over protective parents want the role of violence limited in order to neuter their kids development, in hopes that they won't become violent adults.
>>
>>14199081
There's been a study (can't find it right now so feel free to disregard if you like) that showed that it wasn't the explicitness of violence but how much the children identified with the character committing it that influenced the likelihood of them becoming violent adults.

So like, if you have a child protagonist who punches the bad guys, your kid is likely to punch someone he or she perceives as "bad." If the child protagonist punches people at random, the kid is likely to punch people at random. Whether there's blood or not.

Meanwhile if you have Godzilla rip another monster's head off, as long as Godzilla isn't humanized too blatantly, the kid is unlikely to become violent as a result.

This was also contingent upon the age of the child and like 5 other factors, so like, just don't be shitty parents, and hope for the best.
>>
>>14198893
Ultraseven had quite a bit of blood, though...
>>
>>14198795
It healed instantly for Godzilla, but there were still bloodstains. And Anguirus' mouth definitely didn't heal instantly. He hobbled away with a fucked up and defeated roar.
>>
>>14199149
Makes sense, however the heart of the thing is not being a shitty parent and explaining that violence isn't how you solve problems. It comes later that a kid learns that violence has its place and can become necessary but only under the correct circumstances.
>>

>>
>>14202302
The stumbling around drunk was right after he appeared, well before he got shocked by the military. Also, how long after King Kong was this supposed to take place?

In fact, in this movie he didn't seem to actively, intentionally hurt anybody besides Mothra. He just stumbled around, then wandered aimlessly, found an egg, tried to eat it, got attacked by Mothra, killed her, wandered some more, got shocked by the military, then got beat up by caterpillars.

Depends on the person. I got my girlfriend interested with Raids Again, Vs. Hedorah and Vs. Biollante. Each had their charm, she saw the effort put into the fights in Raids Again, and that carried over when she saw Vs. Mothra. Vs. Hedorah I prefaced by saying that it's appeal is the almost schizophrenic manner in which it was directed. Vs. Biollante doesn't need explanation, it's just a damn good movie.

Whenever Resurgence comes out, and I can get it with subtitles, I plan to do a big marathon for like 10-15 friends, starting with the original, then probably explain to everyone that the original Godzilla is dead and this is a different Godzilla, show Vs. Biollante, then Vs. Destoroyah for the tragic death. Then bust out Resurgence for THE RETURN OF THE ORIGINAL GOJI HOLY SHIT.

It's gonna be fucking amazing. Godzilla themed snacks: Rodan-shaped cookies, oxygen destroyer punch. I don't give a shit if it's cheesy. It's my fucking party and I'll SKREEONK if I want to.

>>
>>14209328
You're simple aren't you? I was making light of your use of the term not calling you that. Who the fuck cares if Heisei used production values instead of wrasslin'? Besides you obviously. As I said each generation of Godzilla had strengths and weaknesses. The worst we got out of Heisei was Vs. Space Godzilla, at least it wasn't as bad as All Monsters Attack. Aka Oh shit! There's money to be made, just cram stock footage from Son of and Ebirah with a little bit of extra b.s. sprinkled on top.
>>
>>14209381
When one of the meteors in space fucking falls due to a wire malfunction, it's bad effects.
And All Monsters Attack had new scenes shot with Godzilla, Minya, Gabara and Kamacuras. But everyone just assumes it's stock footage. IT HAD FUCKING LESS STOCK FOOTAGE THEN GIGAN.
>>
>>14208843
At any rate, that movie tends to be not as polarizing as the later ones. At best, they can appreciate its seriousness, its tone, the social commentary and its historic value. At worst, they might be bored by it or concentrate on its faults rather than its strengths.

Truth be told, I may not like the movie as much either if I wasn't aware of all the interesting details behind its production.
>>
>>14209390
Bullshit, AMA had the most blatant usage of stock footage in the Showa run. Just because it had new scenese doesn't forgive 69 minutes of your time watching 2 slightly and I emphasize SLIGHTLY better movies in pieces, inter-cut with the most asinine story of a little boy being kidnapped and overcoming his captors with a few scenes of Gabara bullying Minya. You're defending the worst of the entire series and even Vs. Space Godzilla had more going for it with weak characters an ill-explained narrative and the attempt to return to Showa standards. I'm not picking apart Vs. Mecha-Godzilla or Vs. Astro-Monster. I'm taking the piss out of a movie that is considered, and rightfully so, the worst not of Showa but of the entire series.
>>
Do all Godzilla movies take place in the year they were released in? Trying to figure out how long it was between Mothra vs. Godzilla and Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster, since Mothra Jr. is still a babby.
>>
>>14209657
I'm pretty sure G v Monster Zero is some time in the future, like at least some far-off time like 1995 or so
>>
Why do Godzilla movies have this reputation as shitty, cheesy monster fights with no real story? That not only describes less than half of Godzilla movies that exist, but even less than half of the Showa movies, which I imagine are the ones that most people in the west are aware of, and which includes the worst offenders as far as movies that DOES describe.
>>
>>14209657
It varies, but you shouldn't be looking too deep in the continuity of the early movies. I mean, Son of Godzilla is late 60s, Destroy All Monsters is in the 90s, but Minilla is still a kid, even though in Son of Godzilla, he developed from a tadpole-like baby into an upright-walking kid under days or weeks.

I think Heisei movies take place one year after they were released, and Final Wars is apparently also in the future, but I don't know for sure.
>>
>>14209674
Because of perpetuated stereotyping like
>>14209070
>>14209241
And the fact that dubs don't really care about source just lip sync; and re-cuts don't help, offenders are the butchering of the original with Burr, Raids Again oddly enough some of George Takei's earliest work, Vs. King Kong with that Scientist talking about Godzilla's diminutive brain, '84 with Burr again and the re-cut of the Russian attempting to launch the nuke instead of stop it. Alternatively, the fact that even though they were a step up of the original US releases, the Sandy Frank cuts of Showa Gamera including low budget sets and actors they rounded up off the streets.

>people being generalizing shits in general
>muh western superiority
>Godzilla vs. Megalon was the most widely available movie for decades, and it fits the bill of a bare-plot cheese-fest with cheap effects
>lots of the movies were only released in the west later than in Japan, so they always looked somewhat dated
>most people who saw the movies likely saw the shitty dubs and stupid American re-edits
>as a whole, the franchise is obscure as fuck in most places, so if an average person hears/reads that the movies suck, they have no reason to believe otherwise
>monster movies were already considered schlock in the west when the Japanese series hit its stride
>most western people don't understand Jap sensibilities, so stuff that's accepted there (like not overly realistic effects or some fantasy elements) is frowned-upon here
>people tend to think that special effects that are easy to figure out (such as suitmation and miniature sets) are by default sloppy
>honestly, most of the movies aren't that good, not necessarily horrid, but average fags are more likely to harp on and accentuate the negatives

Are there any anime that take place in a world with kaiju? Not like Attack on Titan, but modern day, only there are monsters. There's something weirdly cozy about, for instance, Mothra chilling out on an island with all the worshipers, and caring about their well-being, and knowing that even though Godzilla will absolutely fuck up your shit and is not remotely nice in any way, he'll also fuck up any giant aliens who might show up.

I don't know. It seems like it'd be interesting to show how the world changes when those kinds of things become, not everyday, but also not entirely unexpected. The perfect example is the "Where are they now" show in Ghidorah, where the kids ask to see Mothra AND ACTUALLY GET TO. This is an interesting development from the previous movie where Japan and the people on Infant Island were all but enemies.

I think this kind of stuff is cool as hell and would love to see an ongoing series with lots of lore, a number of kaiju, and a consistent cast of humans.

Closest would be the series of shorts (not to be confused with a short series) Godzilla Island, but that was less anime more action figure/stop motion iirc.
>>14209736
I don't think so, Vs. Megalon isn't as bad as it gets credit for. It's not not a classic for being serious or well written. It's tied with campy kid godzilla in my book with Vs. Hedorah. I just don't expect Godzilla to be taken seriously through that lens.
>>
>>14209746
Hedorah is the main focus of that movie and it represents the unstoppable effects of pollution and a smidgen of psycho-sexual fear.
>>
>>14209746
G vs Megalon is less terrible if you don't watch that horrible print that circulated the US mistaken for PD for a while.

It's still kinda dumb but it doesn't look anywhere near as bad.

Yeah too bad Banno got demoted for it. He'd already planned a sequel in Africa, and tried with Godzilla 3D or something in 2004 I think to bring Hedorah back. He deserved better than being btfo in Final wars after Zilla.

I got the DVD a few years ago with both dubs and better quality than the VHS I grew up with. Still disappointed they never fought on the Twin Towers though.

Megalon was a work of desperation, and it's weird how it wasn't even meant to be a Godzilla entry, yet it's one of the most infamous. From a movie making perspective, it's trash, but it's charming in its stupidity and it's just fun, kiddy cheese. I can't hate it.
>>
>>14209777
yeah vs Smog Monster gets somewhat more shit than it deserves
it's one of the only movies after 1954 where the monster is representative of a big non-monster real thing, and they made a bigger point of showing people getting killed than I remember a lot of the other later movies doing

It just had such a switch back and forth in its tone, goofy cartoons to people being skeletonized. Godzilla being buried in toxic sludge and shrieking in despair as it happens to one of the top two goofiest things he's ever done, fly. I feel like the writers kept going back looking at the footage deciding it was too much and trying to tone it down and failing in the attempt. I say this from a place of love but that movie was all over the map. Also why did a kitty get slimed?

Return of Godzilla, Godzilla against Mecha-Godzilla, Maybe Final Wars if you like a lot of short fights cut for time? It really depends on how you define Godzilla being a badass. Vs. Biollante had a great scene where G destroys Osaka. Vs. Destroyah had its moments. But if you don't care for Heisei beam spam, there's Vs. Mecha-G, Vs. King Kong, OH and GMK is pretty good.

Quickly /m/, what is your favorite Godzilla movie?
Personally, my favorite is GMK followed closely by Terror of Mechagodzilla. I always felt like those two had some of the best human characters and great kaiju action.
My only disappointment is that GMK didn't go with its original plan of having Varan and Anguirus instead of Mothra and Ghidorah. I feel like it would have made more sense, as Baragon, Anguirus and Varan all look similar, and Varan is my all time favorite kaiju.
>>
>>14211080
Original and GMK, even though it sucks that the latter couldn't achieve its full potential because of the hurried production schedule and Toho pushing changes on the monster cast. Also, I was really tired of Mothra by that time.

Showed the original Godzilla to friends. They liked it. One of them commented that Serizawa's death became a bit obvious as what had to happen about 15 minutes before it happened, but said it was well executed anyway, and was dramatic without being overly so.

They actually commented on how well the effects aged, saying practical effects age better and they'd much rather watch this than bad CGI.

At some point in the near future I'm going to show them another. Any recommendations? Leaning away from Mothra or Mothra vs. Godzilla because one of them saw the former a number of times as a kid and I want to show them something totally different from what they've seen before.

Name 3 legitimate qualities (besides "muh metaphor for the atomic bomb") why the movie should be considered better than any other Showa'zilla.
>>
>>14215131
First off, it WAS good at the nuke metaphor, and literally less than a decade after Nagasaki.

That said:

>the conflict between modern and traditional playing out both in the general public's dismissal of tribal traditions and in Emiko's struggle with wanting to marry someone other than the person she's been arranged to marry
>the fact that Godzilla is actually intimidating and a horrible monster in it, and doesn't do things like slide around on his tail
>Serizawa's sacrifice which simultaneously saves humanity from Godzilla, prevents the global use of the Oxygen Destroyer, and makes things work out for his friends, played out at the exact right intensity to be dramatic and intense but not over the top and cheesy

Bonus:
>Serizawa in general

The only Showa Godzilla movie that comes close is Mothra vs. Godzilla.
>>
>>14213683
>something totally different
If that's the criteria, you can go with multiple choices.

King Kong vs Godzilla: self-aware camp with social commentary and cheesy effects. If the remake does materialize, it might not hurt to be familiar with the original.

Invasion of Astro-Monster: fun sci-fi romp. One of the main characters being American also makes it somewhat unique, I guess.

G vs Hedorah: the most "different" of all the Godzilla films, goofy and childish yet horroristic, trippy as hell, tends to entice extreme reactions.

G vs Gigan or G vs Megalon: cheap and stupid but fun 70s trash. Partially responsible for the "Godzilla is garbage made for retarded kids" notion.

G vs Mechagodzilla and/or Terror of Mechagodzilla: still cheesy, but better technically. The former's action-oriented but shallow story-wise, the other attempts drama and deeper themes but it has a weird contrast with the 70s camp.

Return of G: serious again, modernized for the 80s, but instead of memorable characters you have explicit political tensions.

G vs Biollante: serious, esoteric, deep themes, interesting ideas. Regarded by some as one of the best the genre has to offer, and by others as overrated.

G vs King Ghidorah: socioeconomic and nationalistic themes wrapped in cheese and action-sci-fi craziness. You either enjoy the fun and appreciate the message or find the entire thing laughable, including the spotty effects.

G vs Mechagodzilla II doesn't try to be that deep or serious, it's a tad "smoother" than some other Heisei films. G vs Destoroyah brings back serious topics and tragedy, but it's overwrought and not as groundbreaking as it could be, and you may wanna watch GvsMGII first to get a background on Godzilla Jr.

GMK: better made than most, deep messages combined with mystical shit, but the monsters aren't their usual selves.

Final Wars: all the questionable aspects of the franchise rolled into one and amplified. Again either cheesy fun or a retarded mess.
>>
>>14215160
Thanks. I think I'll go Heisei first to get them a bit more into the character. Probably skip Return, jumping right into Biollante, then King Ghidorah, then Mechagodzilla II, and then Destoroyah.

It did better than some say, to be fair. Just talking about the movie itself, not the merch and tie-in promos which did consume way too much money. It made okay business globally, had a somewhat respectable opening, and nowadays sometimes that's enough for a sequel to be announced.
