After almost 2 month of operation, the last 70s & 80s mecha thread's limit have been reached and it is now heading torward the depth of the last pages. Hopefully, here s the new 70s & 80s mecha thread comming through, ready to continue it's predecessor's job. Not been here lately? Gone missing or something? Here's the previous thread >>13958313.

Most of you already know the rules, right? If not, here's what this thread is for: argue, discuss and dump stuff like artworks, fanarts (if they're well made of course), sketches, magazines' scans, artbooks, DVD/VHS/LD/CD/BD's covers, ads, musics, screen-caps and so on, that have a link to a Sci-Fi and Mecha anime/comic/novel/film/OVA.

Watching Mazinger Z has been great fun. On 22-23 now, up next is the episode with Jian, the robot who flies at mach 5!

I do see what folks meant when they said the manga Sayaka and Kouji were nicer though, by comparison the anime versions are much ruder. Since I'm not that far in I assume the banter is far from the worst of it.

I started watching Zambot 3 expecting light-hearded MotW 70's action. Man did I not expect this body count. I was vaguely aware that the ending had lots of deaths, but I didn't expect so many so often from the start.

>>14174622
Do they ever stop being ungrateful fucks?
>>
>>14175658
The answer to that question might vary, I think.
You can certainly focus on the positive and say that people learned to appreciate the Jin Family's sacrifices in their efforts to defend the Earth.
On the other hand people could have kept thinking this was a mess the Jin Family themselves created. And honestly, the lives they save through most of the series far surpass the casualties.
There's also a certain final speech (that I must not spoil) that puts a twist on the entire thing. But that speech can also be interpreted either way.

Short answer: no. People in general don't stop. But they also shouldn't. The Jin Family is a bunch of violent nutjobs that put children in charge of death machines.
>>
>>14175674
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to finishing it. I've been spoiled over the years with people talking about the ending having a high body count, but I never expected there to be so much death right off the bat with episode 1.

It really is refreshing though seeing a show dealing with how many casualties come from fighting in giant robots near populated areas. Lots of shows have done it, but this is the earliest one that I've seen that's dealt with it. Most stuff from the 70s I remember just sort of ignore the fact that so many buildings are getting destroyed. I feel like they should include Zambot in that upcoming videogame where you have to survive in Tokyo while Godzilla, Ultraman, and other big monsters are destroying buildings.

Everything about Zambot 3 so far has really surprised me and been better than I expected.
>>
>>14175707

You have not seen much then
>>
>>14175707
It's funny when you compare it to something like Mazinger where you end up wondering why is there still a city near the Lab, considering how many times it sustained horrible damage.

Not to mention all the dead people. And animals!
>>
>>14175712
Admittedly no, there wasn't much 70's stuff subbed a decade ago when I was really getting into older mecha stuff.

I don't recall ever hearing about it before, all I ever heard was that the ending was a bit of a downer and a number of the main cast dying, including some of the kids. But I also haven't seen much talk about Zambot at all in the past few years, and haven't been around /m/ much in those years either so I might've heard it in passing and not remember.

Either way, the whole show really picked up again with episode 16. Nearly finished with it.

Thanks, got ten episodes into Bryger now and it's some of the best epsiodic storytelling I've ever seen. The only real problem I have with it is that Bryger itself feels a bit superfluous, but it's goddamn phenomenal otherwise. I am a tad confused by the soundtrack though. I don't mind it, but why does it sound like it was composed by Deep Purple? Did the 70s reach Japan a bit late?

Brygar is one of those shows that is a perfect example of the robot being a complete afterthought in order to get a sponsor. The other J9s are similar in that regard.

So how're you finding L-Gaim overall? I really liked that episode in particular.
>>
>>14224836
I'm enjoying it, but it isn't without fault. The episode scripts are usually pretty bad, but I like the overall structure of it. It seems a lot like ZZ, even the second part of it. The constant double-crossing of all involved parties is entertaining to watch, and the characters no longer get hit with the retard ball every so often, like they were in the first half.

Man, that was fast. It's a good thing he considers translation an alternative to playing games (alongside actually enjoying the show).
>>
>>14227234
Well, lesser alternative. I mean if I have the money, I'd rather play say, Dark Souls 3 or some other AAA games... but I don't, so the game 'guess what's he saying' and 'how would you translate this sentence' gonna have to suffice for my fix of escapism.

The show itself is indeed enjoyable, though! I like the lighthearted nature of it, though the high amount of dick jokes is quite...unexpected.
>>
>>14227287
It might be best to go for discounts, sometimes.

That said, Kanda has a lewd sense of humor, which was already displayed in Vifam. I sure didn't expect him to actually show erection jokes outside of OVAs though.
>>
Does anyone else think the female characters in L-Gaim seem pretty "modern" moe? L-Gaim was truly ahead of its time.
>>
>>14227363
When I watched ZZ a couple of years ago, it almost felt like a harem anime transposed into a mecha setting. Complete with a variety of hair colours and ages.

So I completely agree. But these two, at least in the first half, take after the Dirty Pair. That was ahead of its time too.

The same animators had worked on Dunbine, and they liked Cham. So L-Gaim got a fairy.

Yeah I know that, that's why I asked if they had any connection.
But anyway, if they only decided to include her because they liked Cham, well that's a good enough of a reason for L-Gaim to have one then, Cham was among the best girls in Dunbine imo.

I'm genuinely suprised that all the main characters sruvived. Kyao even gets to fuck a fairy.

A fairly satisfying ending, although the last arc went on a bit too long. And even if Gablet and Daba never had a final confrontation, he was a good rival. Probably one of my favourites in a mecha show, I think.

It has a lot of heart and soul. Not much in the way of plot, but you end up really liking the cast.

That said, while the kids do end up becoming a lot more involved in the war during the show's second half, ironically the show kind of loses its momentum as a result. Pretty similar to Dunbine in that regard.

Man, Mazinger Z is great but damn sometimes it's fantastic.

Why wouldn't Koji want to marry someone like Sayaka? In the manga they were so much nicer together. Hell, Aphrodite A and Borot even got a chance sometimes. By comparison the anime is hilarious but it makes me sad they aren't as cute together, or at least not in the same way.
>>
>>14261990

I haven't watched the show yet, only read the comic. Does Kouji treat Sayaka THAT badly in the animation?
>>
>>14264057
Both treat each other badly. It's not like it's one sided.

It does change in the last 20 or so episodes of the show though, after Sayaka's first robot is destroyed and she even becomes kind of crazy for a bit before recovering, but that's already near the end of the show and by that time the series focused much more on the Dr.Hell and Mycenae stuff so there's very little screentime of improved Sayaka and Kouji actually hanging out.
>>
>>14264109
It;s too bad they seemed to have run out of mecha beast designs ideas by the end of the show, though.

I went in expecting more Xabungle but it's its own thing. It has its weaknesses of course but I didn't mind watching Daba and his gang being decent folks and watching Heavy Metals bash each other.

Ending battle was easily the weakest aspect due to seeming rushed though the animation was fine. Final scene was nice. You can see the parallels between Zeta and Double Zeta in L-Gaim as well as some Xabungle bits (e.g. the general comedy, Gavlet Gablae)

I asked for the subs that were used in the original hardsubbed episodes and I got them, I ripped the rest from the nonsubbed episodes. If you do some searching in the archive you might still find the softsubs. Also it's shit, don't bother.

The Cockpit?

Did they get a new translator or something?
>>

Yes and no. UK Windom has been speeding along on Dragonar after Star passed it to him (though that may be slowed down slightly since Star is trying to contact Gorge). Meanwhile, Sasword came back and is akin to a marathon runner on coffee.

I meant, the softsubbed episodes. And I'm 100% serious with the "don't bother". It's a show that got extended and then canceled and it really shows, in the worst possible ways.
>>
And speaking of Area 88: did the rescan thing get DCMA'd or something? I just rembered that the last thread got most of the posts deleted before the thread itself got deleted. Is that guy still scanning KoS?
>>
Does Mospeada ever get a plot?
>>
>>14305755
Technically speaking UK Windom agreed to take over as he owed me a favour for Gyrozetter, Gunlord was the one contacting Gorge and he has gotten contact and should get a script to us by the end of this week. Sasword's been back for a while, it's just no-one cared about Goldran.

>no-one cared about Goldran
More specifically, nearly everyone here was excited over Silver Castle Subs plowing through it, while Sasword was working in the background. Thanks for clearing it up though.

>>14305940
Yes, though it's solved anti-climatically.

Are there any mecha series with fantasy themes?

Galient.
>>
>>14307831
Dunbine
Escaflowne
>>
>>14307831

Well you have the habitual Dunbine, Galiant, God Mazinger and Wataru. Granzort has fantasy elements in it too if I'm not mistaken.

Gasaraki when it's on LSD?

Scrapped princess.

Both outside the scope of this thread.

Same with escaflowne.

Surprisingly enough, it's time for more Boss!

How far along are you?

What are some pre-0079 mecha with lots of drama, aside from the romance trilogy?
>>
>>14313419
Getter Robo G, Grendizer
>>
>>14313419
Kotetsu Jeeg.
>>
>>14307831
Five Star stories
Panzer
Dunbine
Escaflowne
Maze
>>
>>14313419

If it wasn't for the tiled ground, this scene wouldn't have been that weird looking.

You're a big professor.

Can't talk for Jeeg as there's no complete English sub, but Nagai's super robot series are the exact opposite of what I mean (aside from the reboots, I guess).
I'm looking for 70s mecha that have a lot more character/plot development than a villain swap every 26 episodes or so.
>>
>>14318703
Zambot 3. Granted, it's pretty short.
>>
>>14318713
Have that one in my backlog, that's a good one I think.
Maybe Yuusha Raideen as well.

Great little OVA.

Yeah, really enjoyable. Also the MC's two acolytes are qt. Too bad the mech arrives a bit late though.
