It uses the VF-19A wings, for one, instead of the typically different design on the -19S/-19F in the Macross 7 fleet. The Zolan-designed speaker pods on its shoulders are meant to interact with the space whales, same as the ones used on the Zolan-type Star Mirages. Its engines are of the -19A variant, as well. Other than that, though, I don't think it's a massive change from the VF-19 line.

Basara never fired a shot with it but, as a point of reference, most Zolan units used disabling weaponry against whale poachers in lieu of their variants' original armaments.

The TV series is the end to the main plot of 7, but Dynamite is where Basara and the song truly shine.

There's something very transcending about how Basara relates to the plot in 7/Dynamite that I just can't quite seem to put into words. Here's there in the story but at the same time it's almost like he's this meta-outside entity that exists beyond the anime and has come to sing his song and only just that.

Still though, personally I think Macross F (and movies) is probably my favorite anime of all time. Its just got everything I enjoy. The Mecha, the Love Triangle Drama, the Waifu, and the music.

It's an A-type, so it's probably a first-gen, and a direct lift from the YF-30 Chronos' airframe.

It isn't a direct lift at all though. The YF-30 and VF-01 have some not-insignificant transformation differences in the torso area, and the VF-31A shares the same transformation mechanism as the rest of the VF-31 line. Note the location of the nose-cone.
