***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

It's relatively cheap, even for the IBO line. Any suit that's not a Graze-type was usually at least 1,000 yen, and for this, a Gundam-frame type, to go for 800 - 850 yen depending on which online retailer you use is pretty neat. I'll probably get it if I don't feel like getting something else

could someone tell me why my paint looks like tinfoil instead of being smooth? just the type of spray paint i used, or did i paint it wrong?
>>
>>14161719
Man, so much for a "complete" set then.
>>
>>14161756
What did you use?

Spay paint is pretty hard to control the texture. Mr Hobby and Tamiya Spray paint is designed for models. Most others aren't.

Also shine is going to highlight any bumps, textures or imperfections. A flat/matte coat would dull it out.

That effect is called "orange peel". Google it among plastic modeling sites.

What you want to do with spray paints is apply them in several light lights. Heavy coats of spray paints is going to give you orange peel.

Also, you can get a smoother finish by putting spray cans in warm water for 10 minutes right before spraying. A plastic cup filled with warm water that goes up almost to the spray nozzle of the spray can is fine.
>>
>>14161780
It would be the same. Only it's now permanent.
>>
maybe i shot it from too far away, i didnt warm the can either.
>>

>>
Actually my paint is smooth, just felt it, it's not an orange peal texture, when I said tin foil, I meant visually which is the glitter in the paint, what I wanted was a solid silver so i just bought the wrong paint.

A topcoat wouldn't "smooth it out", but it would dull it making the imperfections less visible. Its hard to tell from the picture, but if the surface isn't that smooth to the touch, a matte topcoat wouldn't hide that much.
Basically either take some paint thinner to it, or chalk it up to experience.

Nice.

I like panel lining. It's oddly therapeutic.
>>
>>14162771
Got any tips for it?
I can't seem to do it satisfactorily. I just started with a gundam marker and it seems too thick for most. I tried using a cotton swabs but it seems to thin the lining too much and doesn't get some of the tight corners.
>>
>>14162782
Use hobby swabs and not q-tip brand. Gundam markers are alright, I have grey no name marker I use for white parts ad well.
>>
>>14162667
Too many panel lines for a Zaku, I prefer a smoother look for Zakus.

I love the thickness of the legs of the origin grunts, its feels like zeon early suits. But I hate how there is no option for a standards backpack or shoulder. The pbandai proto zaku/dom has a perfectly flat normal zaku shoulder, not peg, or need for a cover piece like the stripped part. The heavy reuse of the same weapons tree feels way to lazy even though its ova accurate. Im still going to get it but it feels like such a waste of plastic, the bazooka, the rifle and the mg wont be used, neither will the shield, ammo etc. I got a zaku sniper and standard zaku on the way for kit bash purpose but also so I have a standard zaku 1 mg or the one shot early bazooka for it to use. But to each their own.

Well for one, try not to press down too hard, you'll blunt the tip making it spread out and thus the lines thicker, and you'll make the colour darker than you may want as well. Just go gently through it once, or twice if needed. Try positioning your pen at the angle the groove goes, that can help too.

If you're not satisfied with the GM 01/2/3 line, try the Sakura Pigma Micron 005 series. I'm not entirely sure if the Pigma Microns are smaller, but when I used them I did kind of feel that they do feel thinner and more precise. Also, what colour Gundam marker are you using? Like the other anon before me said, grey looks a lot better on white than black.

Otherwise for swabs, I've gotten into the habit of not moving my hand, but just spinning the swab very lightly in places and just moving my arm up and down the line on some pieces. It thins the lines out nicely and if you do it right, it can create a very, very subtle weathering effect, if you want. It might not work on all kits, but I like doing it sometimes.
You could also go full barbarian and quickly wipe the excess lining off with your finger, it usually works well - unless you've got naturally sweaty hands, in which case you'll just smudge a lot.

Anyway, it's really a case-by-case thing, and since I really don't consider myself an expert or even to be good at panel lining, there's nothing I can say that will definitely help you.
If all else fails and you're still not satisfied with the results, maybe try to panel wash? Look up some guides and videos on Youtube, see if it's something you'd like to try.
>>
>>14162782

So I need some input.

I found this lil guy while cleaning out my closet. Apparently I built him years ago, back before I had clippers and all my Gunpla was shapshit-tier monstrosities. Looking back now, he's only missing his left hand and has a bunch of nubs that I can sand off.

So my question, how should I paint him? Should I keep him as the Forest Green Sniper from 8th MS team? Make my own Xth MS Team and paint him in those colors? Just throw him out because he's garbage? Suggestions?
>>
>>14163981
I like the asura motif with its six arms, but yeah, I like the Dendrobium more.

It's just that I thought kit technology would have improved over the years.

That's why I want to fix him up. I got him on a while a long ss time ago, and I remember snapping him together at college.

I really do like the sniper, but how hard would it be to get another left hand for him? It's not the newer ball jointed ones, they're pegs that slide into a cylindrical polycap inside the forearm. Do they make replacements? Or would I just have to jury rig an alternative.

Pic related, it's the arm and peg.

Really great kits. Barbatos cheaps out on some colour separation but the other kits I've gotten my hands on are extremely solid.

The extremely minimal amount of seam welding required on many of them coupled with the low price makes them an excellent pick for people getting into painting who just want to get on with it without putting a huge amount of effort into prepping them.
>>
>>14164053
good line, but there are too many variations on the same basic kit. Too many Barbatos builds and Grazes and shit.

I love that the 1/144s have Inner Frames. the 1/100 Barbatos relies on stickers a little too much. Especially the yellow line on his shoulders. It's easy enough to paint so not a big issue.
>>
>>14164081
No problem, bashing people is useful even if it hurts. You can't get by while being babied. Look at the Gunpla tutorials by Kawaguchi which are on YouTube.
If you want to see really well done custom and general suits look into this site: modelers-g.jp. It's great for inspiration and lets you know that there's room to grow even after years.
Come back when the Deathscythe is cleaned up so we can help out more.
>>
>>14164053
They somehow managed to get away with producing only two kinds of frames and tons of modular armor parts.
>>
>>14164074
There's multiple hand sets you can get to replace that shitty hand. Look for the 1/144 MS Hand sets, there's large ones and small ones. And the Jigen Build Knuckles, if you like fists.
>>
>>14164122

This is proof that any canon shit just gets blindly accepted, the 6 """""forms""""" of barbatos are like "my first super custom gunpla!" where someone swaps like one part for something else bandai made. If this were a fan creation people would call it stupid.

What? The brewers are Turbines kits ad their own custom partial frames, Grimgerde had its own unique frame, Graze Ein had custom frame parts for the limbs and head, and the Kimaris and Rebake actually altered the barbatos frame a bit and made new runners for it.

Only the graze frame saw stupidly heavy reuse.

Just finished weathering the body of heavyarms. Still need to do the weapons later.
Would really appreciate criticisms from people who do weathering here, wanted to try tapping the brush to have the paint splatter on the model like mud would. Wondered if i went overboard and whether i should tone it down by cleaning it up a bit.

Hes slightly out of scale with the hguc ground gundam and ez8. Taller, wider etc different proportions. If you can get your hand on a ground war set ground gundam kit it comes with two gm ground heads so you can make a gm head ground gundam, or replace the old one. This is a pic from the set where dalong compares the old standard gm version with the set.

As for the hands you could try using a pin vise with the diameter of a ball jointed hand, drill out the left hands polycap so it will hold it. Or replace both poly caps for modern hands. But then youd need a new sniper hand, one with a wrist like that to hold sniper rifle. For this I suggest the weapon system with the beam sniper rifle. Its way more detailed, can be customized into 3 types of rifles or mix and matched, comes with a custom gouf swords which can be mixed and matched, one huge one two which I love. A rack to hold said weapons but the best part, left and right hands for both federation and zeon suits both meant to hold sniper weapons and swords.
>>
>>14164225

Slightly longer answer:
They're fine if you know what they're doing. Firstly they're koto kits, so if you've only ever built Bandai kits, you've been spoiled. The palstic is more brittle and sharper and, because Koto doesn't have Bandai's polymer injection tech, koto kits can't extrude plastic very far from the plane of the plate and thus require more small parts to make a single piece. This increases box size and prices which means koto kits can be quite expensive (expect 3x to 4x what you'd pay for an equivalent Bandai kit)

The non-scale Koto kits are fairly good. The 1/144 kits require a bit of work to be VN or show-accurate, but they're fine if you've seen the breadth of how terrible kits can actually be.

>>
>>14166167
I have.
Wiring is tiring, you have to screw some of the wires in the backpack, and they can get cut and you gotta do it again, the metal parts are a bitch to put together, and mine has some issues like some armour not wanting to stay on, v-fin is pretty much resting on the forehead, and I can't push the head together properly. No sort of stand so mid air stuff ain't happening, can be hard to screw the thing properly so you can still pose but not start moving on it's own.
Easily fixed issues, I'd say. Not sure if I just potatoed too hard. Looks pretty good, though.

I don't know what you were going for, but it genuinely does not look close to a mobile suit weathered by battle and the elements. What's your theme? There doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason to your weathering. It just looks dirty and weathered for the sake of being dirty and weathered, maybe that was what you were going for - I don't know.
I don't mean to sound too harsh, but when you're weathering, think of a reason why something would be there before adding it. If there's battle damage, imagine in your head how it happened, and make it accordingly. Always ask "Why is this there? What would be here if X happened in Y manner, or it were in battle in Z location?"

I can see where you guys are coming from.

I do agree that it may have been a little over done.

The silver scratches on the chest seem kind of out of place under the gem. The green shoulder armor piece has silver showing through where parts don't necessarily have the opportunity to get scratched. The waist is all grimed up, and I'm not sure how that could happen. Possibly oil? Smoke? The area between the head vulcans and ears somehow got dirty too. I can't think of a reason as to how that happened.

My goal was to make it look like it got dirty and abused over the years of constant usage without much repairs.
>>
>>14166139

An actual Su-47.

It's the first model I remember building as a young boy. Probably fucked up the paint and fit badly, lost it after my parents moved though.

Make sure to keep the scale of the kit in mind, and look at similar sized real life machines to help guide you
One of the most common things I see is people going hog wild with the edges and removing so much paint, that you would need a giant sandpaper machine to expose so much metal without also leaving huge dents and tearing shit right off

+cheap
+better proportions, NXEdge like

-hollow parts everywhere
-thin weapons, lack of accesories
-shit color/part separation
-stickerfest
-no gimmicks, shoehorned combine parts with HG which looks stupid as fuck

This applies to the whole SDEX line.
The BB are the best SDs.
The BB Unicorn can even transform between unicorn and destroy mode, something the HG can't do.
And it comes with actual clear part as opposed to stickers.
They usually cost twice as much as SDEX though but that still isn't that much compared to what you're getting.

There are many Zaku II out there buy you might wanna go with the newer Origin one.

Better to go with your favourite.

When spray painting gunpla primer goes on first right? Or is primer even necessary?
>>
>>14166869
Yeah primer goes first, and it's not necessary but it will make the paint much harder to scrape off
>>
>>14166869
It can also depend on the type of paint you're using. Acrylics are super thin and tend to flake off, so primer helps tremendously to keep those on. Also wash the parts beforehand to remove the mould release, as that can also inhibit paint adhesion too.

i built that kit in sub-sections and the parts alignment was so bad on the wings that id need to completely re-sculpt how the wings met the fuselage to get things lined up properly, which would also require re-engraving all those panel lines and thickening the entire wing surface. it just didnt seem like it was worth the trouble on a $2 kit i threw together over two days.

Yes, MG's aren't hard. I built some NGs and "HGs" in the 90s when I was a kid. My first recent kit was an MG and I loved it. Basically it just takes time to make. And apply common logic, sand the nubs, read the guide.

Frankly NGs are probably harder because they will still look like shit if you follow directions, MGs just take longer, there's nothing inherently harder or something that requires an engineering degree.

Amiami and 1999 have all the alto and ozma kits + the vf-27 up for pre-order, hlj hasn't updated their site but they're taking back orders as usual

But it is, granted it forwards you to another guide with lots of info on topcoating but regardless, it is in the guide.

Could be Schuco.

First off, the guy who replied to you wasn't the one that asked for advice. Seccond I've read the guide but I'm asking the anons here for advice because I value your oppinion on the matter.

Reading the guide is one thing, but hearing people's experiences is another and in my oppinion much more helpfull/valuable.

There is no need for a knee jerk reaction whenever someone asks a question with good intentions.

Okay, I'm ready for my first PG build (financially and psychologically). Any advice what models I should avoid? I'm considering Unicorn ver. and would like to complete PG/MG/HG/RG (when its came out) versions as well.

I feel like Unicorn would be an especially large undertaking because of it's transforming gimmick
Consider instead 00, Astray Red, or The Strike for a simpler start?
I mean, if your skills are truly ready for it, it doesn't matter what your first one is- but I'd still err on the side of caution, especially as the Unicorn looks to still be readily available for a while.
>>
>>14169646

>unicorn is difficult because of transforming (also LEDs)

>consider instead transforming, LEDs, and weird motor shit
>>
>>14169653
For the record I have no experience with PGs, I don't know about any gimmicks kit to kit, only what I see on Dalong- but even on the PG it seems like going from 00 to Raiser is just as simple as it always is. I don't think I can ever call it a transformation.
>>

>>
>>14169357
So far I have built most of the PGs, Couple of things.
1: Can't go wrong with the original Gundam, bit older, but it's still nice even today.
2: Zaku's are amazing, they fixed most of the issues present on the gundam with them, minus some armor on the thighs just wanting to fall off the moment you touch them.
3 MK2 is fantastic, just fucking beautiful
4 Zeta is a beautiful beautiful brick, build it, paint it, pose it, and leave it the fuckin hell alone or your asking for disaster.
5 WZC is the same as zeta, worse so due to weight problems, if you can get that fucker balanced or fitted for a stand, great, but super back heavy otherwise
6 GP01/FB ground type is great, fb is top heavy
7 strike/strike rouge perfect, if you like strike stuff, I don't
8 astray, perfect, if you like edgy tryhard mobile suit designs, I don't
9 00, least it comes with a stand, have fun with the motor gimmicks you will use once.
10 Unicorn, pretty much the same as 00 cept that bandai realized they could DLC the fuck out of the kit. Least they weren't smart enough to realize 3rd party people would sell the same shit for a 1/3rd of the cost.
>>
>>14169392
>>14169397

>>
>>14169712

>>
>>14169712
God bless you sir.
So far I built only hg/mg/rg kits and I'm shocked - RX-78 (v3) legs are falling off just like HG version.
So you telling that Unicorn expansion unit and led units are mandatory? I thought if I like them I could even get a Banshee ver, she still needs an extra stand and a led unit?
>>
>>14169740
I'm guessing the rotating GN Drives
>>
>>14169765
LEDs are not mandatory, however if you want to use them, buy them before you build it, cause if not your pretty much tearing it all down just to install it.

>>14169766>>14169740

Yeah, the GN drives is what I'm referring to.

So I feel a bit of bias is showing in my telling of them all, if you love the suit your eyeing, get it. You wont find a more detailed version of it if its in PG form. Zeta is only a statue because of how old it is (2.0 came out years after) so naturally with the height, moving peices and weight, generally the slimmer kits will just fair better overall.
>>
I'm trying to handpaint, but I can't thin acrylic properly for my life. Does it get any easier if I use thinner instead of water?
>>
>>14169885
Yes, it will also thin better with just iso like 91% or so.
>>
>>14169844
>>14169712
OH! Almost forgot, WZC has no opening hatches. You can take the armor off but the service hatch mechanism in most other PGs are not present at all. Sooooo yeah.

Guy without any experience with clear paint here, I'm planning to buy some clear paints (Tamiya) to paint the clear parts of a 00 kit, for the clear glass parts on the legs and arms of the kit, should I be aiming to paint the whole piece green or should I be aiming to paint the underside of it only, same question for the forehead jewel
>>
>>14169885
Depending on the type of acrylic you're using, the thinner may different, so water won't work for stuff like Tamiya's acrylics.
>>
>>14170098
I use Liquitex Basics.

have never done that though

I was looking at the GM Cold Districts type and suddenly had the epiphany that a lot of the more advanced GMs had a visor/eye-space thing that was very reminiscent of a Dom's (due to the triangular shape).

Does anyone have any pictures of a modified GM that has the clear visor painted black and a mono-eye inserted? Or a mono-eye-modified GM at all?
I want to see what it looks like.

tl;dr I want to see HERETICAL BLASPHEMY.

The real problem with snapfit is he does no panel lining and he doesn't file nubs down, he puts on effort in after removing it from the sprue. I'm not sure if he even uses the provided stickers, in place of paint/waterslides
