So I watched the only subtitled episode of Tetsujin 28. The animation is pretty hilarious and it's incredible how much the animation in TV anime improved in just a few years later.

Although the animation quality might have more to do with it being a 90+ episode series or maybe Eiken was the JC Staff of the day.

His manga aimed at adults are mostly garbage. Backgrounds tend to be ugly and filled with black chicken scratches everywhere as "detail". The character art is inconsistent, randomly changing between semi-realistic to deformed and cartoony for no reason.

He'll introduce a character to advance a plot point and then when that's done he'll kill them off in the dumbest ways possible. They rely too much on shock factor.

His female characters are all useless idiots.

He gave Dororo a shitty ending.

>>14169012
It's pretty funny. You won't find anything critical on his work anywhere. Yet you can find harsh reviews on authors like Ishinomori, Leiji, and Nagai.

There's a level of snobbery when it comes to Tezuka's work because of that "God of manga" title.

Go Nagai fans can admit that all of his works aren't amazing. Ishinomori fans can admit that a lot of his works are pretty same-y. Why not Tezuka?

I read Hi no Tori his so called "masterpiece", and while it had some good chapters, the instant he tried to do something other than a short a simple story it went to shit. Thankfully the anime adapted a lot of these specific chapters and removed the dumb crap out of them.

I currently own Ayako, Swallowing the Earth, and Book of Human Insects from his darker period. Also read MW, that silly homo furry manga, Barbara, and Apollo no Uta.

The only one I don't regret buying is Ayako, and even that has a silly ending that could have been avoided.

Barbara is a manga that abandons its premise halfway through, iirc.

Book of Human Insects is a mean spirited manga with no real point other than getting away with being a dick and licking naked sculptures of your dead mom.

MW is a nonsensical manga that asks the reader to overlook something incredibly obvious on the detective's part to finish the story.

Apollo no Uta could have ended after a couple chapters. Same thing recycled for an entire volume.

Swallowing the Earth should have ended after the guy escaped. Instead it keeps going.

Being a fan of Tezuka prior to this change must have been depressing. Your favorite author repeatedly kicking you in the nuts and kicking sand in your face.

>There's a level of snobbery when it comes to Tezuka's work because of that "God of manga" title.

I wish more people would know the very interesting story of how that came to be.

>Not too long after, Ishinomori became one of the most requisited artists of the Tokiwa-So building. Dragon Pond had given him great prestige, to where nowadays each reprint is accompanied by an interesting article, published long ago by some manga scholars that tells the origin of the expression “God of Manga”, attributed to Osamu Tezuka. It turns out that at one point, a popular journal of Japan decided to write a story about Shotaro Ishinomori (then Ishimori) and titled it “Shotaro Ishimori, the King of Manga.” Shortly after, Tezuka and Ishinomori met at a party and the first, although a genius artist of his own, was extremely vain and competitive, approached him and said, “Onodera, if you are the king of manga, so tell me, what am I?” It is said that Ishinomori was silent for a moment and then said, “Well … So you must be the God of Manga”!. Tezuka came out visibly pleased with the answer, and the term was used since then to qualify him.

>Go Nagai fans can admit that all of his works aren't amazing. Ishinomori fans can admit that a lot of his works are pretty same-y. Why not Tezuka?

Most Ishinomori's works are not even same-y, it just happens to be the most commercially successful ones. Would be the equivalent of Tezuka's Astro Boy and Kimba for the western audiences. And the Astro Boy manga actually suffered from low sales in the US when it was first released. It was only later that his adult works got him mainstream attention and a Eisner Award. Ironically, now there's a demand for Shigeru Mizuki, the same guy Tezuka accused of having no actual talent, calling his art crude and unappealing. He also said he losing an arm was no excuse as there's no limit for the human spirit or whatever bullshit like that.
>>
>>14170996
Thanks, this looks rad.

Look at the bright side, Tezukafags: even if the shit he made wasn't good, he at least had an actual influence on things, which is more than you can say for people that made garbage and had no influence on anything, like Ishikawa.

Tezuka was incredibly flawed and mean-spirited towards his contemporaries. He believed himself to be the intellectual, the classical music counterpoint to the jazz and rock 'n' roll of the artists that came after him. He actually labeled himself as that. In Japan, there's a lot of actual criticism for Tezuka's works coming from big names in the industry like Takao Saito, Miyazaki and others. Even Naoki Urasawa commented on his negative points before, despite the fact he idolized Tezuka himself. In American, however, there's no counterpoint, the Tezuka's fan community is incredibly loud and blindly defends the guy without never considering a second point of view. And then there's people like Fred Schodt and Helen McCarthy who helped to spawn this vision of Tezuka as this absolute genius with no flaws so many people associate him with. And to be honest, I used to be a huge Tezuka's fan myself, but came to a point he started disgusting me and his apologists had a huge role on this process. You can't even talk about classic manga artists without someone bringing Tezuka for comparison and concluding everyone was ripping Tezuka off as he was the only true God among all those commoners. And what's the craziest part in this all? They believe Tezuka got his reputation in Japan for stuff like Black Jack, Adolf or Apollo's Song, when what really made him so influential was New Treasure Island, Lost World and Metropolis. And guess what? All those titles released in the US were critically panned (by anyone who at least bothered reading them, I guess. There's no real manga critics in this country). Not even Tezuka fans care for them.

Like people giving Tezuka credit for the Metropolis anime when it's not even based on his manga. He claimed he never saw those films before making those manga which is weird. I don't know much English criticism of Ishinomori or Leiji online because outside of here they aren't known that well. Unless you meant that one faggot who moaned about NOT MUH ZELDA on Amazon, but when Ishinomori only has three series published in English outside of Comixology criticism's going to be thin on the ground. Nagai's biggest source of criticism IS here, the only stuff you'll get outside that is people getting offended by his sensibilities (so who cares?) or pointing out that the majority of old OVAs based on his work are crap, and they aren't wrong.

Tezuka does gets his dick sucked constantly by casuals who don't actually read his comics and a few semi-professional people, but there's such an abundance of criticism for him in Japan that I think it balances out. Plenty of people there call him out for his pettiness and for Mushi Pro locking the anime industry into the lowest possible cost model it has suffered under ever since, though I don't personally hold him to that. Hanna Barbera was the only name in American TV animation for twenty five years of mediocrity and piss poor standards, and they started off making the best Tom and Jerry shots. Economic realities have always been the bane of creativity in animation. If Tezuka hadn't done it someone else would have, I don't know why Miyazaki thought they'd be any better off if it weren't for Tetsuwan Atom.

I'm sorry, what?

Fucked if I know m8, streaming services do not count anyway. I have the DVDs, so I haven't bothered to search for Ultraman online since but when I did all I found was a torrent with dub only. It was on Demonoid.com, to give you an idea of how long ago that was.

There's a part in the review where the reviewer complains about Mazinger not having windshield wipers.

Ah, I see. I just found and read the review and the accompanying thread.

Perhaps this sounds too harsh, but I hope the author and everyone in that thread dies in a freak fire.

Well that's fortunate, since their Kamen Rider V3 torrent is still there, last I checked. Thanks for the tip.
>full Spectreman dub torrent
This return trip is even better than I expected!

Even then, I don't think Reed Nelson is a regular, either.
>>
>>14173369
Were the recent Lupin III guides the only articles Reed has written for them or are there others?
>>
>>14173393
That's it. The only other things he did was ask a question for the Answerman column and had a participation on the podcast (on behalf of Discotek, of course).

Dave Cabrera used to write for ANN too. Might still, I haven't been keeping up.

90s anime style was gross.
>>
>>14167569

Not true.

Even Jared Cook and Frederick Schodt, who translated the Phoenix manga in its entirety and fought for it to get published in English for 30 years, admit that the series really isn't worth reading after Resurrection.
>>
>>14176154
That looks like it's from an 80s issue though.

Which one is Resurrection again?

Taken from wiki
>The sixth volume, originally serialized in 1970-1971. The story takes place in 2482-3344 AD. In an age of robotics, technology and science, young Leon dies in a car accident. He is returned to life by scientific surgery, but his now mostly-artificial brain makes him see living things -- including humans -- as distorted clay figures, while he sees machines and robots as beauties. Leon falls in love with a worker robot, Chihiro, whom he sees as a beautiful girl, and will fight for this forbidden love. He will also find out the secret behind his accident. A side plot features the robot Robita, who previously appeared in Future.

Oh, thought that one was rather mediocre other than being an inspiration for Saya no Uta. The chapter with the space pods was the best.
