Well I talked before about how to measure when a tokusatsu is too toyetic, and I used Changerion as such a case. One goddamn punch before using just his generic gimmick weapons, but I never really explained WHEN a weapon becomes a gimmick.

I argue a gimmick's once you have to physically stop fighting in order to use it. Older examples would again, be Changerion, like that stupid arm-disc-gun he has to stop and prepare before using it, whilst the monster is usually standing or rolling around in pain. On the other hand, you get something like Kuuga's Titan Sword, which is literally just a big sword. A sword's a sword any day of the week, but you can't just compare the Ryuki's Sword Vent to say, the ZanVatt Saber.

We'll use something a bit more in the middle but leaning towards "weapon" first: The Faiz Edge. Takumi's gotta usually quit fighting, turn around to his bike, yank the damn thing out of his bike, slip in the Mission Memory and there, you've got a lightsaber baton. By that point, he just beats 'em around with it, slashes, whatever. The finisher is just opening the phone, hitting "Enter," and waiting for it to charge, which Takumi usually sets up. Not really a gimmick. They don't gotta cut anything, it's all done and set up and is a simple enough rule to follow that no directors *seriously* screw it up.

On the leaning more towards "gimmick" side of things, we will use the Steering Sword. Getting it's simple, literally just hold out your hand and the damn thing flies out of Tridoron. But you've got this steering wheel as a handguard, and the sword itself is stated to be very wieldy by Shinnosuke. So it's more difficult to fight with (He gets a good hang of it, though) but he can mor easily get it. The gimmick comes in by his special attacks, which I'll elaborate on in the next post.

He can stop fighting (this is where the gimmick starts) and turn the steering wheel, activating special attacks where he usually whirls around his enemy, generally kicking the shit out of them because he's a protagonist, but still. This seems initially like no big deal, but then there's the FINISHER. Drive's finishers were always pretty difficult for me to like, he stood still too much. The Mach Driver and Brake Gunner ones were much better handled, in my opinion.

You have to usually load in a shift car, turn the steering key and all that, which takes a lot of time. At the same time, there is a small charging time, usually shown on the Drive Driver's display as a little speedometer, but they're very inconsistent with this. As a result, the sword stops being just a wieldy sword with a special addition to being a gimmick all around.

This alone from a weapons standpoint makes Drive more gimmicky than Faiz. Am I speaking the obvious? Fucking yeah, every Rider since 2010's been even more gimmicky than ever.

Though I will say, at least it's not the goddamn DJ Gun. Holy shit that thing hurts to watch.
