The only difference is that some scenes are slightly redrawn.

Otherwise it is almost an exact CUT FOR CUT version of the OVAs except with a few minutes of expository summaries at the start of each episode. The start of episode 4 had a 4 minute summary of the last 3 episodes, basically the first OVA. There is no new content. It feels especially disjointed because of the poor editing.
The fact that the guy couldn't tell you what's actually brand new and how the direction is better just serves as fact that he's completely talking out of his ass.

The only reason he's enjoying it before is because of the summaries and the spoonfeeding of the plot points at the start of each episode, because he knows what's going to happen, and how he only needs to pay attention for 20 minutes at a time and not for 40+ minutes.

I'm not expecting too much change from the OVA in the early episodes but when each episode opens with a 3 minute narration BEFORE the OP, I get worried. The pacing make me think that each OVA is slit in 3, so 7 OVA making 22 or 23 episodes, give or take, since the final is 1.5 hours. How may episodes is this supposed to be? 10 minutes new footage? 20? Is it worth it? I thought Unicorn was really good, but needed a little more development in the dessert maybe, but other than that...

Only thing they've cut is the title card from the start of OVA ep 2. Otherwise they literally jumped from the end of 1 to the start of 2, repeating the Unicorn transformation and Mineva saying "Gundam" they had 5 seconds earlier.

The only difference is that in smaller bites, you can pay more attention to the scenes that were already there, but would otherwise get forgotten by the end. Scenes that most people haven't seen in 5+ years anyway.

Gundam has held both arguments. They generally hold the "war is hell" standpoint, with wildly different levels of seriousness. "War is bad" pacifism is a major thing in 00 and Wing. "War is necessary" is the starting point for many Gundam stories, since sectorial strife at a massive level makes a good backdrop for Mongolian fingerpaints to sell transformers.
