Probably this guy being a chauvinist: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=8979. He did get mostly better by Grendizer, at least.

Now, Gosaku Ota's version of Koji, on the other hand, doesn't even know the meaning of the word "shame".

I think Sayaka being an ass actually gives her more character. She becomes more like her manga self by the end of the anime, when she gets her 2nd robot, and I feel at that point she adds a lot less to the show.

In any case, Katsumata probably had some sort of mental issues at the time. Like he was hating teenagers, or something.

Eh. I doubt he was an ACTUAL chauvinist so much as it was just the nature of the times he was working in.

I mean let's be perfectly honest it was pretty even across the board how women characters where shown in anime till at least the 80s

But her interactions and overall character become much less relevant than before. Before that she could a lot of screentime focusing on her fighting or plotting against Kouji. After that, although she helps more in battle, I don't think there's a single episode that actually gives character focus to her, she becomes pure support.

>>
>>14155345

>>
What about delicious brown Jun?

How come she didn't have a robot in Mazinkaiser?
>>
>>14155466
Because Mazinkaiser was Nagai saying sorry to the fans for shitting so horribly over Kouji on Great and Grendizer. Also, the nips don't remember Great very fondly. At least Grendizer is babby's first fujobait show
>>
>>14151667
Garada subs are good most of the time. Swearing aside, they are still more accurate than the Grendizer and Combattler V subs we have. I'd def recommend Garada over original and crabsticks. The swearing only enhances everything.
>>
>>14155513
I get Great Mazinger, since the show really was quite inferior to Mazinger, and the best part was when Kouji returned. But I liked Kouji in Grendizer. He still kicked more ass than any side kick in these shows, and even got some kills.

Kouji makes a cameo in something called マジンガーエンジェルぷち. It's not a doujin, even though it's called a "fanbook", it's official and made by the author of the series.
There are no scans of it available that I've been able to find, all I have is this photo from some Japanese blog.
>>
>>14155548
I don't know, he had as much screen time as Duke Fleed, if not more.
>>
>>14155561
Going for Mazinger to a flying saucer is a big downgrade. Also, Kouji was the heroine de facto with all the implications. Kouji was definitely the top and Duke the bottom though. It's even more clear on the manga with Duke falling from the sky in front of Kouji like a magical girlfriend
>>
>>14155521
It would be more convenient if the Garada subs had a torrent.
>Grendizer
Luckily, Johnny-englishsubs has the French DVDs with more accurate subs, so that'll get fixed eventually.

How so? And furthermore, how do you know the second part? Do you speak moon?
>>
>>14155743
Yeah, I can understand moon. It was inferior since Tetsuya and Jun just weren't as fun as Kouji and Sayaka. They were really forgettable, and it was mostly Boss that saved the episode with his gimmicks. And the villains were pretty shit. They had seven generals and all of them were just empty shells.

I don't know, but I'm glad it turned out the way it is. My favorite parts about the show are various plans of Ashuta and Brocken, the gang hanging out, Kouji and Sayaka fighting etc. Even the upgrades were spread really well that it never got dull, but you'd be hyped as fuck for it each time. Mazinger getting Scrander was one of the most badass things in 70s mecha, especially since it got a song as well. It being the first mecha show might sound troublesome when it comes to content, but honestly it never gets stale. They always changed things up and kept things fresh, something I can't say about Toei Getter Robo, Great Mazinger or Combattler V for example (Grendizer was a huge improvement over those three, on par with Mazinger Z but fuck Danbi's early shenanigans I did love the episode where his daughter nearly died to alien attack and he started hating them)

I don't think that Mazinger would be what it is now if it was closer to the manga. Although that aside, I still love Shin Mazinger as well, which was somewhat closer adaptation of the two Mazinger manga and one shots. I think it's all just like Sailor Moon. The manga is good, but I still ended up liking the loosely based TV show more. In SM's case, the faithful adaptation kind of flopped though.
>>
>>14156070
Well Shin Mazinger wasn't overly faithful since it drew from a number of sources and had its own thing going on. I'd say Mazinkaiser was the closest, which is interesting because it's also the Mazinger work I found to be the most dull.

I have seen Combattler V though and I disagree with you on it because I thought that even if it may get slightly repetitive at times, the show had really solid concepts and execution for the majority of episodes (though I won't deny that the first half was generally better). It got away with what it did simply by telling good individual stories and didn't have to rely on the crutch of a new toy feature to hold my interest.
>>
>>14156070

I don't know anon, Toei Getter was pretty damned good. Better than the manga even, bbqh.

>>14156070
Mazinger Z has some really great direction. All the episodes involving Pygman were great.
>>
>>14156104
I'm not calling Combattler V bad or anything, but its novelty is a five man gattai theme with mechanical combining (rather than what Getter had) and aside from that, it never adds any new upgrades other than YoYo after a couple episodes. In Mazinger Z it took Kouji a couple episodes just to learn how to operate it, and they introduced his moves slowly. Before big upgrades, he'd usually struggle a lot against underwater enemies or airborne enemies, which would lead tho the big upgrades like Scrander. Combattler V was more the same thing when it comes to action, but the character episodes were really good, so it didn't get repetitive at all in the first half, plus it helped that Garuda was a great villain with some depth. I probably wouldn't even mention Combattler V if it wasn't for the second half.

>>14156109
I'd be happy if we had the best of both in one work instead. Musashi was better in the show, but I don't know, Ryou was just a generic hero compared to Ryouma. Getter Robo's charm is just how batshit Ryouma and Hayato are, plus the danger of Getter Rays. It's weird seeing Getter Rays of justice. So basically manga Getter Rays and characters + anime plot and I'd be sold.
>>
>>14156161
So have you even watched the second half of Combattler V? Because if you had, you'd know that it gets the V Laser and the Grandasher right at the beginning of the second half.
The second half isn't even bad, it's just more childish and has a dumb ending. It still had some great episodes and I liked seeing the villains plot against each other towards the end

>>
>>14156173
Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Wasn't that used in the first half first? I could swear they used it before the fight with Garuda.
>>
>>14156192
Actually, I got it wrong, they introduced the V Laser and the Twin Lancer in the second half. The Grandasher was introduced just before that. I believe they first used it against Oreana or whatever the hell Garuda's "mother" was called
>>
>>14156161
What annoyed me the most about Combattler V is that most of the time, when transformed, none of the other pilots do anything most of the time. That and a lot of the times the main pilots can go an entire episode with only one line of dialogue.
>>
>>14156212
Yeah, it's mostly Hyouma and Juuzo that get most lines, with Chizuru being in the middle. And in the second half, those two kids end up having more screentime than them as well.
>>
>>14156212
That's a problem with pretty much every combining robot team with more than two members as far as I can tell
>>
>>14156139
It probably helps that Katsumata was supposedly an assistant director on samurai dramas before starting his anime career.

>>14156070
In regards to mecha shows in that era, the live-action Red Baron was also good in terms of not being stale, even if some upgrades didn't get much use (looking at you, Screw/Spiral Beam), and also had some interesting episodes. Looking forward to Starseeker OCRing that one.

That said, it would be nice if one Mazinger anime actually adapted Dr. Hell's origin story from the Ota manga, for once.
