Last time on SRW GC Translation Thread: >>13763820
- GC is confirmed to be in OG: Moon Dwellers
- Dancouganon continues to rescue threads from archiving.
- SRW MX is happening
- SRW UX music hacking.
- Oppai is slow because there's not enough Yuri in GC (someone make a cheat code to have Sally be Milky Tits's love interest)
- Russian names and Katakana resolved.
- OG: MD English release confirmed.
- Hacky battle subs in G-Gen Overworld.
- Bring's trip to Sapporo got cancelled.
- Bring finished both of his written comprehensive exams (one oral left)
- Oppai says, It's time for L-Gaim!
- UX prologue translated
- Dragonar Episode 14!
- PS3 emulator exists (not that it's good yet)
- Z3.2 chapter 1 translated.
- What is the fucking bump limit now?
The old texture replacement method is still usable, up to stage 20, essentially act 1. (can be used along with the new one, just don't get the stages or battle lines)
http://pastebin.com/CYDquvFD (embed)
The new method. We have VWF, so it looks better! Except for the character naming screen. That's not right. Not sure if this needs to be updated now.

>>14179518
Akemi, one of the selectable gender OG protags. She's nicknamed as such due to a translator in-joke.
>>14179518
If the jokes folder is still up, there's a joke translation of the first stage of female real route where Akemi has been renamed Milky Tits.
Due to the fact that both OGs are called Akimi in this game, the nicknames "Milky Tits" and "Mankimi" stuck around.

It's still up. Use the files in this folder and go through the stage 1 intro to find out why she's Milky Tits.

Does anyone know where I can get the extracted text for SRW Z (the first one)? I'm rusty as all getout on my Japanese, and would like to try and brush up on it in an entertaining (and hopefully useful) way. Any help would be appreciated.
up
I'm not convinced it's been extracted. Z has compression for the text. You may find it on Japanese sites, with a little luck, maybe?
Worth a shot. I see that there are pieces of it that people have posted here or there, but nothing that's complete.
Which SRW OST's do you listen to, fellows? I've just recently come upon some JAM Project live videos and they are pretty good!

I guess after doing this for years I get a bit skeptical. Doubly when I'm the one doing the work because I know my own track record (not good) and attention span (really short).
I appreciate that, though. Thanks.
>>14219642
Not really. I can look at the files, but they're almost all compressed, only the voice acting wasn't. I can take screenshots of UX, but I haven't played UX past the third stage. Anyone with CFW can do that.
>>14222735

>You wouldn't by chance know anything about DS compression/ripping would you? Been trying to get my hands on the L or K files and it's been a bit of a battle. Alternatively Super Robo Gakuen.
I was told that these have 3 different compressions. I haven't got anything figured out on my side. It certainly looks like a tough nut to crack.
Hey wait - weren't you working on something else?
>>14223957
I have a multiple of projects going at any one time.
Currently the Overworld translation doesn't need my help as they're doing actual heavy translation right now. A point where I'm of little help. My japanese ain't the best.
The sprite rips is hopeful for MechaMon. Having a uniform sprite style would be most useful.
>>14223977
Mechamon, it seems to be a cursed project. Watch out for sub ninjas.
Daily reminder that those who complain about the translation and compare them to the japanese source text wouldn't play the game in japanese anyway. They are not your target audience.
>>14227062
I mean they would play the game in japanrse. Sorry for ze typo
>>14227062
Nah, the people who complain are the people who know a little, enough to complain it's not a direct/literal translation, but not enough to actually play the game in Japanese.

Maybe one day when I have time. I do have plenty original Dancouga pics.
>>14223957
Where is Zearth from Bokurano on that? Also bump.
Hey, guys. It's been a while.
I think I'm going to drop out of the project. I don't have much time to work on anything, nowadays, and when I DO have time, I just don't feel like working on GC. Plus, I don't actually have a PC that can run GC right now, so all I have is my physical copy of the game, and that's no help.
I don't think it'll make much of a difference, because I've already accomplished about 90% of what I can do for this project.
I had a lot of fun, and it was really cool to be involved in a legit translation project. I always wanted to work on a translation, but I didn't know enough Japanese to actually accomplish anything. Being able to work on the menu translation in GC was a nice experience.
Dash, Bring, Oppai, it's been great working with you guys. Without you, the project would be nothing more than a half-assed menu translation (which would eventually crash and burn, due to emulator issues) relying on texture replacement. I never imagined the project would evolve like it did, and I hope you guys are able to finish it, one day. Thanks for all your hard work.
On another note, I can't believe Yuuko Mizutani's gone, now. That hit really hard. She apparently finished recording for OGMD sometime last year, but it's hard to imagine OG without Excellen (not to mention Alfimi, Lemon, and Seti, to a lesser extent).
>>14254387
Don't wander off too much, I've been inserting graphics for a while and the results are looking pretty good now that we have much less limitations.
At some point I'm going to be asking around for translations of locations that didn't show up in the first 20-something episodes and no one has more experience than you on this. But mostly stay around to see how your baby turns out.
>Without you, the project would be nothing more than a half-assed menu translation
Boy, now that I'm putting the graphics into the game I can tell the amount of work that went into this. Calling it half-assed is a huge understatement.
I'm also amazed by how far we've made it with this and had a blast doing it with everybody, even though I haven't been able to stay as constant as I would have wanted to.
>Yuuko Mizutani's gone
Well, shit.
>>14254387
Waw Steve. I definitely understand, but you have to tell us. Is it the Triad? The Einsts?
On another note, Dash, this looks nice!
>>14254387
The sub ninjas strike again. I can't blame you through. I haven't made real progress in over a year. The VWF was my last real contribution to this project. Time is such a limited quantity.
Bumping with trivia.
There's graphics in the game for an eight skill ace: support.
Why they decided to leave out a boost to support abilities in a game that encourages the player to stick their units together in defensive formations is a mystery to me.

Is the DS game a good place starting point for SRW?
>>14280178
Which of the DS games?
Do you mean to play or to translate?
>>14280178
I'd recommend either J or OG1 for the GBA to start off with. They're fairly modern games and available in English. You can get a feel for the mechanics without having to worry about everything being in Japanese. Once you play one for a while, you could jump into any game, translated or not.
In terms of DS games, I really enjoyed W (honestly, I enjoyed making it even more broken than it already was). W also has a great LP that you can use to follow along with the story.
http://lparchive.org/Super-Robot-Wars-W/
>>14280178
They are very good games. Well, W and L are at least. The issue is how good with moonrunes are you. Are you fine with jumping into a 100% japanese game, or do you want to play a translated one first to get the hang on the menu layout and gameplay?
If it's the latter I suggest OG1 for the GBA. Unlike this guy >>14283602 I advise against J because it's simply not a very good game.
>>14283602
I have to second OG1 too. I had avery good time with it, and there's OG2 lurking in its shadow to take you to greater heights.
If you do love your mecha series, you may be disappointed in OG and prefer J.
And if you can handle Japanese, then instead I'd recommend you tell us which series are you favorites, so we can sug' better.

Looks pretty good, and quite a bit better than what I came up with. I got pretty lazy with the textures I did, and didn't put borders around the letters, due to having literally thousands of textures to edit.
Are each of those individual "images," or are they using an in-game font you made?
>>14354025
All of them are individual textures generated in-game from a template image like this one.
Indeed, giving border to an individual texture instead of a couple hundreds is way easier.
Speaking of the font, I'm considering making it a little bigger, although if I do, there's a bunch of things I might break in the process...

Thanks for all the bumps. Sorry I've been inactive.
Scenario titles inserted. I've chosen to go with "scenario" instead of "episode" as it was before because now we can distinguish between the main missions and sub-missions (and somehow writting "mission" felt wrong).
The font is now the same size for all titles to follow the original scheme of the Japanese titles. I personally preferred Steve's previous style in which he made the size dynamic to make better use of the available room, but using fixed font size allowed me to save 139 KB of space. This could come in handy for future tests, considering our modified font occupies 113 KB.

anyone help? I can't seem to merge the split files again.
>>14425725
File can't be read.
One of three possible causes:
1) You changed the name of the files the directory were you're storing the files or deleted them. Maybe 0000.SPR is now 0000-edit.SPR or it's just not there.
SOLUTION: keep original names.
2) Your user name contains non-ASCII characters (Cyrilic, anything with an accent, etc.)
SOLUTION: move everything to a more ASCII-friendly folder like "C:\Test"
3) The game is reading the " character as part of the file name and can't open it.
SOLUTION: execute the program from the same folder where the program is located, without using any quotation marks. In order to directly open a command window in a folder, open windows explorer, go to the folder you want, keep SHIFT pressed, right-click on the window and select "Open command window here" as shown in the picture.
Creating a .BAT file with the correct command in the folder would save you a lot of time as well.

I always recommend you do the odd-even split. Great Zeo and everyone that's compatible with it on even runs, and everyone else on even runs. Then again, I haven't even beaten J once, so I can comment how good anything from the second half is.
Whatever happened to the UX translation guy?
>>14487951
The sub ninjas got him.
So, the Z LP is finally done on Something Awful, and Brunom is going to do MX next.
>>14488747
Great! You should post the link on the MX translation project page, to let them know.
>>14472906
No, I don't have time to make an already dreadfully slow and tedious game go by any slower
>>14481152
Back. And so are my pictures!
Bumping
So I tried firing up Rec Studio to do some decompiling (as opposed to the disassembling that IDA does). Unfortunately, it didn't work. So, it's back to the old disassembler for me.
anybody know how to modify mech stats in super robot a portable?
or this one, anyway. may give me a clue how the values are stored
>>14502527
There are a ton of info and the encoding is not trivial.
Playtown queen's save editor may help already, depending on what you're trying to achieve. i know there's also a "mysterious person" working on re-balancing AP... (That person is still engulfed in the shadows!)
I don't have time to devote to this, unfortunately.
>>14504032
tried that save editor. it doesnt do what i wanted, and it's not compatible with the english trans.
and yeah, im only asking cuz that mysterious person is still shadowguy
Daltanius is officially fully subbed now! That means that all but Sasuraiger, Baxinger, Daiohja, Trider G7, and that one Raijin-Oh OVA of the series in GC are subbed.
>>14505869
Which Raijin-Oh OVA?
>>14505869
Sweet! Downloading the batches up to episode 23 now.
>>14504032
I don't have the time either, but you know it's in my to-do list since I made the editor for MXP (which messed up attack properties and I only found out months later due to lack of feedback from anons...).
If our anon friend isn't finished with their editor once I'm done with GC menus AND Ace Combat 3's credits, I'll take it up.
>>14506320
I'm guessing it's the one about the castle turning into another Raijin-Oh.
>>14505869
Adding to that, rumor has it that Luurah has Trider G7 to start, too.

Okay.
I think the Shadow Man (I like the name - it's got a bit of a Shadow Mirror ring to it) was really going to do a re-balancing of his/her choosing, not an editor.
I'll share stuffwith you via PM, so we can compare AP vs MX structures.
A bit of progress to spice things up a little.
>>14511737
Now I only want to play her for the whole game!
which file controls the battle menus
like, move, separate, spirit, status
i dont know if i did something wrong or if they're currently untranslated
up
this is probably already know, but:

action replay codes. and you can have a sniper module, and you can have a sniper module, and you can have a sniper module! sniper modules for everybody!
>>14506320
IIRC it's OVA 2. The one with this:

Currently untranslated. Inserted graphics aren't uploaded in the server yet.
>>14523156
This looks nice.
Any news from Oppai? Should we send samurais to dispose of the ninjas that took him?
>>14523156
Looking nice.
Maybe I'll try to make some progress on the decompression code when I'm on vacation.
more like super robot whores
am i rite guise
>>14524876
Have you seen /srwg/? It's pretty much everyone there saying what they want to do to certain female (and occasionally male) character from SRW.
what gundam units other than the one amuro comes with should i be upgrading
they're all so shitty
>>14529307
No idea. I used the items code to max my money and FUP everyone to get through the game faster.
>>14531821
I think some units need to be rebalanced though. A fully upgraded Zaku III being slightly worse than a fully upgraded HM Zaku II always befuddles me.
>>14529307
The original Gundam isn't that great. If you can, avoid upgrading it in favor of the G3 you get later.
Guntank, and Guncannon shouldn't be upgraded either, but they're very useful in the early game thanks to their strong cannons.
>>14533034
the point is i upgrade it because early missions where only amuro can snipe parts fucking sucks.
i gave up and cheated 20 sniper modules into my game though, so those upgrades are somewhat wasted now, but i'll just put somebody else into it
...and everything was going so well until this point.
One more screen that needs X and Y positions to be adjusted by hand to the list.
>>14533781
I know it's not that comforting, but it's been like that for AP too.
Up
>>14533860
I'm dreading the moment I reach that point. I've even had to make map commands small just to avoid having to center everything later by hand.
>>14542659
This looks ok to me, actually. I don't understand what you're dreading.
>>14546590
Well, I know I'll have to look into how menu screens are managed in the game and probably make yet another tool that shows what is going to be displayed... That's going to take an awful lot of time and it's not going to be nearly as fancy as what, say, Kingcom could pull off.
up?

Hmm, well... That's why I chose not to bother with a tool, and instead went for a file with values, and "edit-run" series to tune the values (without a menu preview tool, if you will).
>>14556938
Anon, are you saying that we have a chance of victory?
>>14558399
There's always a chance.
>>14561471
Thanks for the bump.
>>14550412
It always confused me how some SRW games would display terrain bonuses like that. They show the DEF bonus properly, but then the EVA bonus makes it look like it lowers YOUR accuracy. Because GC displays it as a negative value to begin with, there's probably no way to fix it without going in and editing every terrain type, is there?
>>14563245
Completely agree.
In other news, I got my eight year old "nephew" interested in SRW by giving him SRW 2.
>>14563391
Way to go, Bring!
Can you imagine when he's see a proper SRW?
Bump

>>14563245
Would it be better if instead of ACC we wrote Hit%?
>>14563391
Where does he play it? Emulator? One of those miniature NES? Pretty cool way to jump into the series no matter the format.
>>14568273
Emulator, but with a NES USB controller. NES mini isn't out until November.
I was talking with my cousin last year, and she was reminiscing about all the time she spent playing the Mario 3 with her brothers. So, this year, I got her a USB NES controller as a present and set up Nestopia on her laptop. I got them a selection of games, including Mario, Mega Man, and SRW 2 (English translated version of course).
It'd be better if instead of acc -20%, it was evd +20%. But I don't think that's something we can do.
>>14533034
The original Gundam eventually gets a part pack in the Full Armor parts that makes it better.
Guncannon and Guntank beat it in terms of power, Guntank is one of the strongest UC units in the game. No, I'm not kidding, joking, or pulling your leg. It beats the fucking Waverider Crash.
>>14572053
Now that's just silly.
>>14572053
>Guntank is one of the strongest UC units in the game
Gotta love your classics!
>>14574753
How damaging is the WRC compared to other attacks?
When you take out the "my machine won't move" out of the equation, the whole point of the WRC is giving the Zeta super-armor effect so that it doesn't get completely thrashed once it rams whatever's in the way (let's face it, Zeta's armor can't be all that good).
By the time of Zeta, everyone and their mothers have beam weapons that cut through armor like butter and a bazooka shell aimed to the cockpit would have almost the same effect as a WRC (less punch of course, but there's an explosion afterwards).
I feel like the attack gets extra damage points for the dramatic effect only.
>>14575589
We all know that the cooler an attack is, the stronger it is.
>>14575589

>The EX Exbein carries the meaning of sex
Now if somebody says the Exbein is pure sex, they have official sources to cite.
If the EX Exbein carries the meaning of sex, what did the previous Huckies carry? The meaning of making out?
>>14583847
Someone on the team was 'avin a giggle here, because in Japanese, it was zechs and German, not sex and Latin. Same meaning, either way, but "zechs" comes from the katakana in EX Exbein's name.

S on all terrains - I mean, yes, give it, give it!
So, we kinda had an awesome breakthrough on G Gen this week. We've learned where the reference table was, so we can now overwrite text lengths and get full names and full lines in regardless of previous limits.
In otherwords, we can do a full on actual translation now.
>>14472906
Layzner's attacks are much more fun with a proper rip of Lonely Way playing, but I happened to be marathoning Layzner at the time anyway, so I didn't go out of my way.
>>14482425
He's good and all, but his attacks aren't as cool as vanilla Zeo's cause they are all just rips of the boss attacks. Layzner MKII at least gets some new animations and moves that look nice.

Where was the table in the end? Same file containing the affected text or a separate one?
>>14589254
This is awesome news. I need to get cracking on decompilation. I start work again next week, so if I want to get a bunch of time to work on this, this is the week.
>>14589254
That's pretty great. Played these games to death, English UI/unit translation would give me a perfect excuse to pick up again.

We're about to hit the bump limit, I believe.
Yep. You guys need a new thread
I'll be here cheering on you. And bumping threads
>>14599021
>Yep. You guys need a new thread
Good news seems to do that to a thread.
I'll make the thread in 2-3 hours. Also, my vacation got interrupted by rain. With no other pressing commitments (aside from wanting to finish a linked Oracle of Ages game that I started three years ago), I'll try to get some work done on the decompression code today after I get back from the grocery store.
