Being a regular footsoldier in an /m/ setting tends to suck.
Who has it the worst?
>>14135937
I'm going to say artillery crews. If you exist at all, it's just to show how the awesome giant robot can blast right through your puny conventional defenses and unseat you as the king of the battlefield. I think the only /m/ setting where artillery actually matters is Muv-Luv, of all places.
>>14135937
Muluv?
>>14135959
They had artillery in 08th MS Team and IGLOO
Actually, Artillery would be pretty gucking scary to face off against if they're able to hide. Your mobile suit is such a huge target and all. All it takes is one hidden barrage from some artillery hiding in some building to take out your leg or something.
Alternatively, this could be done with tanks.
But, that's getting into "hurrr robutts aren't practical' territory.
>>14135980
No, see, I totally agree with you. But almost no series acknowledges the power of artillery. If it's there at all, it's just to get easily taken out by the mecha that somehow managed to get past the defensive lines to strike at them directly.
>>14135987
Supposedly in Battletech conventional arms actually trump Battlemechs for a given budget.
Or at the very least aerospace fighters are allegedly able to instill fear in a mechwarrior.
BT, a fistful of dice and an ammo drum of laughs.
>>14135937
I think infantry would be the most shitty.
Having to march for days only to get back-handed by a allied falling mobile suit that got hit by another suit.
>>14135987
Dougram actually has artillery show up rather normally, usually in static emplacements but more commonly as towed stuff. J. Locke and his crew use it to hassle Zaltsev, for instance, and the prelude to the Battle of Stanrey Plateau actually has a lot to do with artillery as well.
>>14135937
I feel like gundam wing was probably among the worst. I mean at the end of the series they didn't declare peace in our time apparently they had like a ten year long war on top of everything that happened in that series.
>>14135959
There's an even shittier tier of footsoldier in ML.
Being the actual footsoldier.
The mortar crew were pretty useful in M3.
The infantry also had the basic common sense to retreat when the mindfuck monsters that they can't kill are advancing on them.
>>14137370
Infantry wasn't totally outclassed in Argevollen either.
>>14137364
I feel bad for the common man during schwarzesmarken. Having to try to hold off an alien on slot before tech for mobile suits must have been just brutal. The back story sounds awesome. I just with its not framed with a fucking harem story.
>>14137398
Whats wrong with a harem?
>>14135980
>They had artillery in 08th MS Team and IGLOO
I can think of two occasions where they were used;
>Zeon mountain base siege
The iconic battle against the Gouf custom, we don't get to see much but when one Guntank demolishes a highway you could see how the Gouf would've been wasted if the strikes were direct.
>The Time Limit on Trust
The 08th couldn't break through a defensive line of bunkers head on and got a little shot up because of it, not until one of them circled around the back to flank
>>14137412
magella tanks dug themselves in and were in a hull down position, they managed to take sanders out with a mobility kill
the guntanks were also being used against the zeon mountain base, that was their main objective
I suppose the 08th MS team BD short counts, they were using a damaged zaku holding a magella cannon as an improvised artillery piece overlooking a bridge for enfilade fire
in MS igloo 2 episode 3, artillery makes a grand show and mobile suits get tossed around by well-aimed fire
and in gundam 00S1 they had that massive "training exercise" jointly held between the three power blocs where they had around 15 hours of continuous artillery barrages delivered on each of the gundams
>>14136036
Then again, they haven't fought a Heavy mech with the speed of a light mech and having jumpjets.
>>14137404
>space interceptors
Muh bonner.
>>14137404
I've just never liked em. Its just such a strange fetish/genre out there. Most of them are just so damned mindless.
>>14135987
>But almost no series acknowledges the power of artillery.
Go watch Argevollen. An early two-parter focuses on the fact that artillery has halted the protagonist-aligned army, and they can't advance without disabling it.
The plan is for one squad to bait a bombardment, and then have the MC's machine sprint for the enemy encampment before they can lay down another attack, as it's the only mecha that can move fast enough to reach it without getting blown to pieces by another volley.
>>14137438
Yeah, it's a real shame Igloo2 sucks. The whole death god thing just ruins it for me. If it were just the first ep we could just call it off as PTSD hallucinations, but bleh. So much wasted potential.
>>14135987
All I can think of is the opening scene to Pailsen Files.
And Dougram as >>14137342 said.
>>14137508
Harems are just the natural evolution of romance story. With a normal romance if the reader doesn't appreciate the girl you're screwed, so the solution is to give the MC a ton of girls for every taste out there.
Basically, pandering. Not the buzzword for "thing I don't like", but simply trying to appeal to as many people as possible to ensure success.
>>14137512
Hey, it's still Gundam, what is Gundam without weird psychic ghosts and shit
>>14137644
I've never been one for romance either. Doesn't help. I get the variety but I really don't watch anime for "PRETTY GIRLS" not specifically anyways. So basically whether the girls are desirable doesn't really make or break a series for me is what I'm trying to say. Not that theres anything with fan service or liking a series based around a protag and a bunch of females, I just find such a thing kind of boring and lame unless there is a really good hook. Strike the blood was the last thing that was sort of harem-ish that was semi good. As well as index, I feel it was mostly bad and cliche but the crazy mini story just kept me interested in what was going to happen next.
>>14137512
Am I the only one who doesn't mind death god sillyness in a Gundam show?
Also posting vid because it's bound to happen in this thread.

BETA are smalltime
>>14137814
But there is lots and lots of them.
RX-7 pilots in Gunbuster.
>>14137871
>71 models to go and they have a gundam
would still get wrecked by space monsters but at least it would look cool
>We need a game where you can play as a foot soldier in an /m/ setting.
Somehow this doesn't seem like a good idea...
>>14138392
That would be MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf. The best part of that game is hacking into machines and ejecting the pilots.
>>14138929
It went too far the other way. It got to the point where mechs were obsolete because forcibly ejecting the pilots was way easier than actually fighting them.
>>14137382
based fat mellowlink
>>14137776
No, actually.
I really liked this scene from Thunderbolt

TDA and Alternative are probably the only good stories in Muv Luv, one of the best /m/ content of all probably
>>14135987
>>14135959
I think the real thing to acknowledge here isn't just power, but range. That's half of artillery's advantage; being able to attack targets miles away. And with /m/ level technology, that shit's probably gonna even better.
>>14143456
If Xamel or Hildolrf are any indication, it is better. Even in late UC GM cannons and things like Loto exist and are effective in they role as long range support. Well, UC being a setting where radar and lasers are pretty much useless under minovsky influence, it's pretty much a give that overhorizon, ballistic attacks will be deadly, especially on unexpecting targets. Cheap too.
>>14135937
Well, i have this homebrew campaign about bunch of anti-MS zeon infantry in OYW, consisting from bunch of penal bastard. Advance with Zakus, almost get shredded by mortar, score alot of Jimmies n Guntanks, then do field parties. Then there is one campaign when we try to incapacitate and capture the gundam, well, thing don't running smooth, almost half of the squad got killed.
Thats one good campaign, shame the system and GM was gone.
>>14143991
awww yea
Regular grunts have it pretty shit in Five Star Stories. Where the mechs are piloted by superhumans, are fast as fuck and are bristling with anti-personnel and anti-materiel gunports.
>>14143991
JOKES ON YOU I LOVE DITCHES AND CRYING
>>14147631
The guy's not even in a ditch though, or alone. That Zaku has a GM shield too, so they've had some success.
>>14147631
Go back to the 40k, you imperial guard
>>14136036
>Supposedly in Battletech conventional arms actually trump Battlemechs for a given budget.
Used to be the case with med tanks.
