It's something that Tony gets a new suit every movie but I wish they put a bit more thought into them from a design standpoint, in terms of communicating the technological leap from the old suit to the new one. Hopefully the Russo's have something cool in mind for this and Infinity War.

I really hope for infinity war the Russo's take some inspiration out of Ultimate Iron Man's look. Not necessarily the face or overall profile, just the color scheme mixed in with the Bleeding Edge look of the Civil War suit, and maybe a BIT more bulk to accommodate weaponry to emphasize a focus on offensive capabilities.

Kind of like pic related, but a tiny bit more swole-looking.

I don't know, I just always like the half silver, half red mixed with gold look of the Ultimates suit.

Same reason sidestory variants in Gundam tend to be more complex and busy-looking compared to the more simple, animation-friendly models used in the TV series; the designer has to take into consideration that the suit is going doing to be drawn many, many times by many different people and he/she has to ensure that it's simple enough to be recognisable in anyone's style.

Also keep in mind that since the movie suits are done in CG and rubber plates, they only really have to design the suit once and then run it through mo-cap and shit. Battle damage stuff, you just duplicate pieces from mold and then take a chisel/screwdriver to them, or make modifications to the CG model.

And obviously, the movies have a shitload more budget pumped into them. Throw enough money at something, and you can do anything.

Iron man at least in the MCU is barely mecha. It's basically just a suit of armor with lazers/repulsors for him. Doesn't really feel like a piece of machinery in the movies.

most of the suit's advancement have in portability. In ironman 1 he needed mechanical assistance to get into the suit. By AOU he can take it on and off like a bulky jacket.

Tony is a brilliant engineer, but he's not that interested in building a "bigger gun".

This. If you haven't noticed, the Iron Man suits are getting slimmer and slimmer. There is always an element of miniaturization to the progression of technology; being able to do the same/more things with smaller devices/components compared to their respective predecessors, and the MCU has done a wonderful job of replicating that with the Iron Man suits they've designed. We've already seen a pair of Mk VII-style missile launchers on the Mark XLVI, not to mention a far more complex layout of thrusters and likely more gimmicks we haven't seen yet, and the latter is considerably less bulky than the former

Isn't that just the gauntlet in the glove? I kind of wish it was Extremis and stored the undersuit in his bone marrow. It seemed both more fantastic as well as more science-y (for lack of a better term). It gives a better sense of verisimilitude I guess, given he has to bring the armor itself around with him in a brief case and the under suit is still stored somewhere, rather than being made on the fly by nanomachines. Maybe the movie will make it work though, we'll see I guess.

Tony seems to be arriving at nanomachines technology (which is even more OP than the bio-mechanical EXTREMIS virus) and naturally things get VERY silly at that stage. Only thing that could challenge him then will be straight up magic. Cue Doctor Strange and Infinity Wars.

Not necessarily. One of the benefits of Extremis was that it NOT only enhanced the suit, it enhanced Tony himself; reaction speed in the nanoseconds, far higher G-force tolerance, techno-kinetic abilities, all with a suit that made him damnnnear unbeatablr (even have him a simulated Spidey sense in addition to being able to fuck with Peter's own.)

The nanotechnology in Bleeding Edge and the chest repulsor filled in most of those gaps when he lost the Extremis virus, and enhanced him further, but movie Stark doesn't really have that level of post-human ability (yet)

Funny you ask while I was just starting to read Doom Patrol. There's Robotman. Also Cyborg, Vision,Rom the space knight(soon to get a new series), Kirby's machineman, the original Human Torch and Red Tornado out of the top of my head.

Also, the Metal Men, which you may not consider robots but are great anyways.

I still can't stand the Mark 42/43's design. It's just so...blocky. Iron Man suits are supposed to have this design philosophy that draws the eye inward to the chest RT. The 42/43 is just kind of a blocky mess with no rhyme or reason to it's overall structure

I wanna see the modular armor make an appearance in the movies. We've already seen that Tony can have an advanced weapon system ready to deploy anywhere in the world with Veronica, I'd like to see him do the same with an entire arsenal of weapons that fly to and attach to hard points on the suit, and replace depleted weapons that eject and fly back to the mobile arsenal for resupply (or self destruct if damaged.)
