Stupid and pretentious. Not fun pretentious just dumb pretentious.
Only pushed so hard on 4chan because the lead is a little lesbian girl.

Or rather you'd say that GITS is just Lain without the surreal narrative, distubing atmosphere and psychological depth.

It was interesting, but pretty boring for the most part.

Great Opening, silly lesbian ending.

The dude who made it also confessed that it was an attempt to troll the international cartoon-watching community. It naturally failed because he was a dumbass who didn't cogitize that him and all the folks into scifi refer to the same international standard canon.

>>

The director's on the record saying that he deliberately tried to make Lain THE JAPANESEST EVER so that the non-japanese online community would be rused into not getting it. His idea was that that would spark a fan-war between the japanese and the rest of the world's online communities, but he then added that his plan sadly and inexplicably didn't work out on account of nobody being particularily mystfied by the series' content.
>>
>>14125118

Could you explain how the work is pretentious?

I'm genuinely curious because I've only seen a few things I'd consider actually pretentious and they're all documentaries.
>>
>>14125283
Pretentious can stand for different things:
- The narrative was too complex for me
- I disagree with the themes and morals of the work
- The visual design was unique and creative

I'd suspect it was the first one in this case.
>>
>>14124701

>>14125414
I'm pretty sure it only stand for one thing, and that is
>Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed
It's nice to see the /lit/cucks in here going full force with their undeserved superiority complex though.
>>
>>14126093
I think his is what it means because it's what it means. I'm still wondering how Lain is pretentious

I just don't see it. Someone wanted to tell a story and they did. It has nice art and powerlines.

Is storytelling pretentious?

Also, I think you'd have meant /lit/-rejects since anything animated/filmed etc. is beneath /lit/.
>>
>>14124880
Shit tier. Homepage soundtrack doesn't work, jump is weak, second page's soundtrack has too much dead space in the sound, and the hidden message is way too easy to see.

What is the best BD release for Lain?
>>
>>14124701

it's more cyber-punk than /m/.
>>
>>14126687
I love both, though Lain more. But GITS doesn't have those traits which makes the work appeal to me more.
>>14127328
GITS, Macross Plus and Metrozone 23 are also cyberpunk.

I reckon "shallow" is a more sensible word to use in this instance. You can't use "pretentious" without getting people like you guys getting anal over semantics and arguing over it being a buzzword or not as if this has to do with anything.

It's apt enough here I think, SEL is "shallow" in the sense that it makes your standard comments on the internet/virtualization decaying the sense of individual identity over a fleshless/immortal consciousness that every other cyperpunk series ever also does, and does little else. No it wasn't more unique at the time, this was the "cool" theme to use in Japanese fiction in general during the late 90s/early 00s even.

Being shallow doesn't automatically make it bad though. Granted SEL has little else going for it beyond an interesting atmosphere and a cute girl main character so it's actually a pretty solid reason to dislike the series in my opinion.
>>
>>14127328
Cyberpunk is /m/ though
>>
>>14129258
>this was the "cool" theme to use in Japanese fiction in general during the late 90s/early 00s even.

Post five examples that are close to saying the things SEL said
>>
>>14129258
I think Lain was one of the earlier ones to have these themes in a more grounded setting though
There was a lot of gritty body-horror type stuff and a lot of futuristic city-setting type stuff amongst the Japanese cyberpunk scene, but not much in the vein or style of Lain I think?
>>
>>14124701
'Twas good, but honestly it takes about 2-3 watchthroughs to catch everything, a slight pet peeve of mine. But, at least every missed detail expounds on the plot.
>>
>>14129258
>I reckon "shallow" is a more sensible word to use in this instance
Ok, so can you explain how some specific scenes in Lain are shallow instead of just making blanket statements?

Really, the word you're looking for is stilted, not pretentious or shallow.
>>
This is the only anime that legitimately creeped me out. I fucking love Lain, but there is a very nauseating and disturbing undercurrent throughout the entire show.

>>

>>14125283
Yeah I didn't think Lain was pretentious. It was obtuse and weird but it didn't seem to put on any airs about how "important" it was.

There's only a couple anime I've seen that I'd describe as genuinely pretentious, like GITS 2 or Kara no Kyoukai (5th movie is great though.)

Just reminded me of how the version I downloaded was 57GB or so for a single film. I can't imagine why except if it was a literal BD raw with subs plastered on. But it did look very pretty.
>>
>>14137231
TEN TIMES AS STRONG

I enjoyed the 7th flick, but I really think it should've ended in a double suicide.

So Shiki kills the rabid dude, breaking her "code" because she thought he anchor was kill. Turns out Kokutou was alive so she freaks and kills herself. Kokutou hangs himself because he was a bitch boy or something.

It'd need a little fine tuning.

It was good until I realized all the interesting ideas and concepts that were introduced in one episode get completely ignored and forgotten in the next. Pretty much everything that was said and done was just for show with no substance behind it, all the vague and cryptic dialogue had no meaning behind it and all the characters felt like lifeless husks.

It's the fucking modern art of anime. Only pretentious airheads will pretend that there's anything more to it.

Also that random yuri bullshit that came out of left field at the end
>>
>>14151758
1/10 is way too generous. Even Valvrave had an actual plot. Lain is just pretty colors and 90s computer lingo with no actual meaning.
>>
>>14152093
I remember the first time I watched it I gave it a 9/10, when I rewatched it I could already overcome my confusion and focus on the visual direction and narrative construction. It became a 10/10.

I love the style, atmosphere and all that. Personally I feel like most of the philosphical shit in the show was just kind of thrown in and doesn't blend well with the other philosophical shit. It alludes to a bunch of famous ideas but doesn't really seem to conclude much.
That said, I would've liked it less if it didn't have the pointless namedropping of existential philosophies because that shit is very much part of the mood the show is going for. It's a nice 2deep4me experience.
