Gunpla / Plamo General

***READ THE GUIDE***

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1Tr8UyF2Xg5Ojqw0sxcO7oIG7IIsJPes3lMO5pHZKu5o

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, dont make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

What do you all use when applying putty to a part? Newfag to seam welding here, using a toothpick seemed to not be precise enough and made sanding down the thickly placed putty a pain. Should I just pick up an applicator?
>>
Why is it that we need a thread so early?

If snapshit does make a thread, just a simple sage in that thread and in the previous one saying its a cancerous troll would be sufficient.

There is really no need for this.
>>
>>14118395
nigga the last thread is at page 8. We were due for a new thread anyway.
>>
>>14118417
8, wait til 10, there is potentially hours worth of time before this thread falls off the board.

It's not like the other thread was anything near image limit either.
>>
>>14118429
It's not like we have to wait till we near the image limit either.

I'd agree with you if we were on page 4, 5, or 6 but it doesn't really matter whether or not we're on page 8 or page 10. If someone wants to make a new thread then so be it.
>>
>>14118441

So, if snapfag made a post on page 8, you'd use that thread?

So I did some tests for the fab geese. The left pic is just straight paint, the right pic is a coat of primer then paint, then gloss finish. When I put a coat over the primer (grey) it turned the pink into a plum...ish..type color. Would using white or black primer give me a brighter color?

It doesn't make it shiny or anything. If anything it kinda dulls the shine. Gloss coat helps a little, but not really.

I'm actually about to break my Catehdral down so I can paint it here in the next few days. I'm going to use Rustoleum's American Accents Gold as it's the only one I've found to give a truly shiny gold finish. Everything else has a sort of dull gold to it. However the trade off is that it's on the thicker side. So it's not great for things with fine details.

Gonna be building my first FG kit soon. As in, I will be building one of the worst grades possible.

The challenge here is to make sure it doesn't look like complete dogshit.

Anyone have experience with FGs? One thing I've heard is that they typically require a lot of painting because they're not as segmented as an HG, so a single part could require numerous colors (whereas a standard HG or MG would use numerous pieces in different colors to minimize painting).
>>
>>14119722
The whole conversation was posted in the thread, you can check yourself why type of info they're looking for.

FGs are junk, they're the most underwelming 1/144 kits you'll ever build and wont look as good as a basic HG no matter how much effort you put into them. this is the only good looking FG kit ive seen, and he never even took the parts off the runners.

Yeah, I would normally never build FGs myself, but I just had to get a certain one because it's one of my most favorite Gundams.

I'm aware that an MG kit exists, but they're hard to find, and when you do find them, they're ridiculously overpriced. I also have very mild OCD where everything I build has to be 1/144.
>>
>>14119751
Given the quality of FGs you'd be better off finding a bootleg.
>>
>>14119761

Hmm, I'll have to check to see if that actually exists. As far as I'm concerned, the only series that anyone gives a shit about are UC, and whatever timeline that has prettyboys (Wing, SEED, etc.).

I can't imagine there being too many unofficial Future Century kits.

This is why the mods don't take the problem with snapshit seriously. They just see a tripfag baiting for replies and idiots feeding him.
>>
>>14119932
What makes you think it's not snapshit replying to his own posts?
>>
>>14119932
They don't take it seriously because mods have been here and banned him only for him to ban evade and continue shitposting. /m/ is a forgotten board. Seriously, you people keep saying to ignore him, and yet even in threads where he isn't even mentioned by anyone other than himself he still continues to do the same shit, over and over again.
>>
>>14119953
It's not like mods don't have a way to get ban evaders.

The fact he ban evades alone should be grounds to ban him whenever he posts.

Here's a thought.

Filter his tripcode.

You can do it in 4chan's vanilla extension. You don't need to download anything. Here, I'll even tell you how.

Click on [Settings] at the very top or very bottom right corner of the page.

Click on the plus symbol next to "Filters and Post Hiding." Check the box next to "Filter and Highlight Specific Thread/Post" then click [Edit].

Click "Add" in the new subwindow. Put his tripcode in the pattern field, then check the box under Hide.

Click Save.

There. Done. Now everytime he posts he'll get filtered and you can enjoy a better thread.

I know this is a wasted effort as there are people who won't filter him cause they love replying to him/complaining about him.
>>
>>14119568
Its pretty good for its age. Legs have enough bend for some ground poses (its a Dom after all) and it looks really good IMO. It has a single jointed elbows, like almost all Zeek HGs till the Origin line and some bad nubs on the purple parts. But you get a lot for the money and as i said, it looks really good even compared to alot of more recent HGs. I would say go for it.
>>
>>14120022
or he does the image spamming without the trip in the first place, you cuck. I don't care about him posting his snapbuilds, but when you don't give him the tiniest bit of attention he starts throwing a tantrum and flooding the thread.
>>
>>14120022
He also loves to reply to himself, which is why people need to not reply to people who reply to him either
>>
>>14119568

It's pretty great.

The few seamlines are easily fixed, the nubs are mostly in easy to reach spots and the articulation is really good for such an old kit.

It's pretty much a scaled-down, simplified MG Dom.

Its been a while since I posted, Ive only been snapfitting the MKII Titans Revive. But I decided to gloss coat this HGGF Gundam I got from Japan.

I gloss coated the Gundam, but then decided to experiment with putting on matte, then gloss coat for the weapon and shield. I accidently sprayed too close like a fool when I coated the shield in matte, thats why it looks a bit white. After that I resumed in Gloss. It looks a bit shittu but ah well, my bad.

Same for the beam rifle, except I managed to drop it somehow.

I like how the silver stands out however, i feel a little proud.

Also I totally didnt put all the stickers on either lel

My bad anon, should have specified that they were just RE:0096 variants.

Has anyone here built the ver.Ka kits? I'm looking to pick up either the Nu, Hi-Nu, Unicorn, or Stein as a housewarming present to myself. The Nu looks the best, but the Hi-Nu is cheaper for some reason, I'm curious as to why that is.

Having built the Hi Nu first, I am lacking in motivation to build the Nu because it's basically the same kit sans armor right?
>>
>>14121151

not really, but why don't you wait anyway

I don't get people who build these kits first unless you are sure you're not going to get into the hobby more. Once you build them, you've kind of seen the best of what a kit can do for you.

I've had the Nu, Hi-Nu and PG unicorn for quite some time but they will be major projects and I don't have time for them yet. I don't really have a problem that some people just want to snap or whatever, I just personally don't get why you would build the "ultimate snap kit" early on.
>>

I received the Nu and Hi Nu as a Christmas gift. I just happened to build the Hi Nu first because I really liked its design.

The Nu isn't really my favorite design, but I'll probably keep it in my backlog for 10 or so years.

I've built a lot of kits before hand, most of them HGs. I've built three MGs, and was always looking at the Ka. Nu in the model shop but could never afford it, so I've been wanting it for a while.
>>
>>14121280
the Nu does have some issues:
- the rifle is a bit too heavy for the wrist, so it will sag down
- the funnels when attached to the back are very flimsy, not to mention they do not align perfectly and like to curve inwards
- the sliding panels make some section a bit touchy when handling the kit, such as the chest vents
- no LED, buy that shit separately

despite that, its fucking size is more than enough to make up for those minor faults

also, a look at the MG Hi Nu ver Ka review at dalong shows that it and the Nu are not really the same, they have lots of differences, but the funnel shit decals fest may burn you out if you attempt to build them in a row

So how do kits do awhile after the series ends? Usually in the dead space between season one and two. Does it grow less and less restocked or is it solely based on sales?

Best way to describe it is how the hell do the rare kits happen like noble?
>>
>>14121928
Directly after a series they're usually pretty high on reprints, like the BF series was reprinted monthly for quite awhile.
"Rare" kits happen when demand goes up after a lull in reprints. For example, you'll only find GN Archer for rape prices right now, but she's getting a reprint in ten days so it's gonna take another couple of months to reinflate, if at all.
This is why it's almost never worth the scalper price for "Rare" kits unless they're PBandai (reprinted rarely) or just generally unobtainable (The upcoming Gbouncer reprint is the first I've seen in the last year or so?)

It's only artificial rarity for normal kits though, a shortage of supply and an excess of demand- expect a Noble reprint within the next year- as she's generally pretty well sought after, just not so much that Bandai feels the need to flood the market with a neverending supply of them.

G Gundam kits do get reprints, they're just not ideal. I have a Spiegel kit that I bought last summer, but it's not HG. For that matter, the vast majority of G Gundam kits don't have a designated grade at all, but the quality is equivalent to that of FG (First Grade). That is if we're talking about the kits from the 90s and very early 2000s (since we're talking about reprints)

If you're talking about the more recent HG revisions from 2011, I can find Shining, God, and Master/Fuunsaiki just fine. The real challenge is trying to find a standard Nobel kit (Berserker Mode is easier to find)
>>
>>14122190
Spiegel's the only G Gundam kit to get a reprint in years, man. I'm talking the nograde kits from the 90s. There's no other shuffle alliance kits. With a little work they can look alright.
>>
>>14122196
>>14122190
Can confirm g kits rarely get reprinted. I've had rose and shining on my list for YEARS without a restock, I gave up hope of devil every getting reprinted so I bought it for 25$ somewhere. I luckily got the extra option g gundam pieces long ago, good luck having that reprinted.
>>
>>14122227
The extra option pieces come up on mandarake a lot, but the kits themselves get bought up almost instantly. I'm surprised to this day I snagged a nobel for 1400 yen, too. I'm missing hyper dragon and then the regular shuffle alliance kits, but I also got lucky and snagged a rising and SD devil gundam in the same way. Most recently, an SD maxter.
>>
>>14122196

Wasn't the G Gundam anime intentionally designed as a big "fuck you" to the toy industry?

I heard that they came up with a very stupid plot and crazy mecha designs on purpose so that kids wouldn't want them. Even I find it hard to believe, because that's what the Super Robot subgenre basically is, and they sell toys like hotcakes all the time.
>>
>>14122245
That goes for Victory as well, I think. Almost a quarter of the Zanscare suits probably just weren't feasible to make with the technology of that time and look good, and I bet they'd have a hard time looking good nowadays outside of MG format. They'd probably not sell either because they're most likely too "alien" looking or not Early UC.

I wouldnt put it past them, they havent really shown any of the summers major kits only up to june I think? They still have yet to announce thunderbolts mg or mgs. Dalong usually will show if runners have any spaces or gate cuts that hint at possible reuse in the future. its how I decided to wait on the original kimaris after impulse buying graze custom only to have the superior one come out next.

I have so many projects right now that differ in completion from piece to piece with a bulk being snap builts and the the ones I really dont wanna touch until im sure im able to build them with no issue mostly out of how rare they are being event or p bandai. Yet Im still planning kitbashes, buying impulsively on a select few or god forbid a damn good sale. Also theres nothing wrong with the graze custom I have a standard, custom, the shark eyed custom and a high mobility all good kits fun to kitbash but I would have waited on first custom if I had known the other would have come out haha.

Which reminds me, does anyone else here get a idea, start to work on it until they hit a road block or get a fresh idea that they dont want to forget or really want to get working on?
>>
>>14122188
Yep. Repeat ad nauseum until it no longer shows.
>>
>>14122245
>Wasn't the G Gundam anime intentionally designed as a big "fuck you" to the toy industry?

actually it was quite the opposite. some execs were sitting at a table and the conversation pretty much went like this:

>Sunrise-san, gundams always sell better than the other MS
>what if we made them ALL gundams? then they will ALL sell well
>fucking genius

then they went full retard and only made gunpla of the main 5-6 lead gundams and left all the rest of them in the dustbin. ironically the most complete lineup of G Gundam figures was the American MSIA line almost 10 years later.
>>
>>14122427
The G-Gundam MSIA line caused some problems as well.
>>
>>14122367
How do I deal with the rest of the piece shrinking? Just gotta angle the sandpaper/sanding stick? Like I've got pieces that are even because the putty filled the seam, and you can see the seam because it's filled by putty, but there's no overpourage. The surface is even.
>>
>>14122812
Yes.
>>
>>14122812

why is the piece shrinking, show a pic or be more descriptive
>>
>>14122868
Because I'm sanding it.
>>
>>14122873

this is why you're sanding is shit, because you're not detail oriented
>>
>>14122873
Oh, now I get what you're trying to say. If the piece is rounded, you can try a sanding pad instead of a sanding stick. Sponge + sandpaper works there. Otherwise you just have to pay attention to where you're sanding, and apply more putty.

name one tool you hope is perfected or created perfectly for model use in the future youd want to see.

Laser knife/cutter either in the sense of a hobby knife that outlines where it will cut and then shaves/cuts that projected area, or the same but with a ban saw. I would have said something that scansa 3d model of the part in and you have the choice to automatically and perfectly trim, sand or cut a piece you want through a program but that seem to easy and boring.

Also am I the only one who misses weapon system sets?

I wont lie anon Ive spent a pretty penny for most gms I have and Im attempting to make some variants both in universe and some of my own design. But buying ebay priced wagtail parts and gm cannon parts is one of my most expensive moves outside of pbandai.

But so many damn good ones they could have made with existing molds or during a ova or anime release. Hell even new games. We go gm trainer, light armor, land combat, assault armor, desert, ground type, sniper ground type, sniper custom or ver ka custom along with its variants. Aqua gm, slope or something odd like that, cannon, cannon space type, juggler, night seeker, purged striker armor would be awesome or a re 1/100 with slots for each armor piece so you can purge, etc etc. Same with zakus and I'm not talking about just 1 2 3 and the close variants that origin is giving us but desert, cannon, tank, flipper, minelayer etc.

Holy shit anon, 100% exactly what I've always wanted and what I hoped Unicorn would give us but I waited in vain. GM Spartan and Aqua GM are tied for my two favorite variants. MSVs are almost completely ignored if it doesn't have a V-fin.

On one hand, an All MSV Project would be a dream come true. On the other hand, it's reusing moulds so shamelessly that even Bandai would be embarrassed. And then nobody would have a reason to scratch build.

Well the thing is it be like build fighters kits that are now getting reused for revives. You have a inner frame like the one striker shares with gm kai, and a few others. They could have used it for a few kits allot in fact. Ez8 is a definite improvement in articulation but it also takes away proportions making it feel slightly odd in some ways next to ground gundam which again could have been used for ground gm, ground gm sniper type but those were back when it was merely joints that shared similarities and extended to a few parts.

With revive and other recent kits the shared frame makes sense especially with a lot of suits. If they made a revive gm, they could revive gm trainer, light armor, sniper custom and a few others that share a ton of parts. If for god knows what reason they revived gm type c or striker, theres a few they could do as well like ver ka sniper, official wag tail, original spartan design back when it used type c frame and not gm sniper 2. Then theres some what recent kits that can get a few new parts slapped on or use their inner frame and not be p bandai.

The down side with the graze was the whole frame is shared, but so was 65% if not more of the body on most of its variants. But with the zaku 2 desert type or ground type you would have inner vents or altered leg and arm frames, along with the outter armor but still use some of the original kit. They also need more kits like balden/bolden arm arms with limbs, ball joints and things like the campaign parts had to extend pegs, thicken pegs, ball to peg, peg to ball, etc.

it does the gm sniper custom some good, but my head canon still has it so when the type c frame finally rolled out into a limited production newer gm snipers or older ones were refitted to keep its edge far above the base line models. This would also give a good reason for why the sniper 2 was rolled out to try to cut down on price if the wiki is correct. I mean youd think the newer improved frame alone be more then a standard let alone supped up standard gm sniper custom.

Someone even redesigned the ver ka in blazing shadow style.

I have xuron 2175ET, Tamiya Side Points and Mr. Hobby nippers and I like the tamiya and xurons a ton. I could do with either as a full time cutter. I like the tamiya slightly more for actual kit pieces and the xurons more for styrene work, but again both are great. I like the low profile of the xuron cutting heads, you can get them into really tight areas, and the overlapping blades does a good slice rather than pinch.

that was due to the grenade nature of the rg inner frames complexity though.

Could it be a Leo? I mean its got the torso and heads shape, the shoulders seem like balls with armor or boxy armor with guns. The simple small skirts, curvy arms. as for the legs it looks like inner frame or using the light to really mess with how wide they really would be. Hell even the foot looks close.

As I said its deliberately set like this to mess with the figure. You cant hide all the proportions but with light and other gimmicks you can easily make the illusion that it has thin thighs. Shit they dont always tease all the accessories either so removing the thigh armor is another viable way to trick people or cameras.

Its like a magic trick, only can see it from the front, blinding light behind it etc.

Just finished topcoating RG 00 Raiser. It just looks plain wrong, so here's my opinion on where it loses to its MG, which I feel is the best 00R to date.
However, anyone who cares most likely already has their own, so I'll keep my opinions to this one post.

My gripes with the RG version :

1. Arms are fat and stumpy.
2. Shoulders are too wide, which gets in the way when the drive binders are in the down position.
3. GN Drive cones are too small. The defining feature of 00 is that it has twin drives, but they don't stand out enough on the RG.
4. Binder lock only closes in two positions, so in any other angle, there's an very visible ugly gap in the blue holder part.
5. Face vents too far apart. Although personally, I think having no face vents at all would have been the best.
6. Gray and red parts of mid-to-lower torso are too blocky. They're almost the same width too, meaning there's no definition in the waistline.
7. MG's legs are slim and curvy, RG's are stubby and blocky (seems to be an overall theme with RG 00R). Especially evident in the ankle guards; where the MG's gently curve outward and give the calf a smooth tapering silhouette, the RG's are about the same width as the calf themselves and just go straight down.

There are places, however, where I feel the RG is absolutely superior, which is why I don't regret getting it.

1. More attractive decals.
2. GN Sword 3 can attach to 0 Raiser directly without any additional part needed.
3. 0 Raiser can connect to an action base without having the GN Sword 3 beneath it.
4. Much more vibrant clear green parts and the awesome shiny green stickers underneath really make them eye-catching.

Maybe I'm being too harsh, since the RG is supposed to be its own unique thing, not a downscaled MG. But the 00 Raiser is my favorite MS, so there.

good god man did you even read? its not about the guns construction. Its the holes around the barrel or the heat guard. First off your not drilling into a flat surface let alone two meaning your bit can wonder or slide about. The dead space in the hollow part of the tube makes it so staying aligned isnt as easy as drilling a solid block of plastic. Now add to that aligning each hole so that they dont wonder and are equal distance from each other while remaining on a straight path. If you drill wrong your holes will elongate, be wider or even ruin the distance between holes. Add to that if your holes must be oval like the leo, trying to get two holes side by side then removing the center plastic so that it makes a perfect straight oval outer wall.

It ruins the aesthetic if your not accurate and aligned properly. if holes dont match up perfectly, etc.

Just found out the kit I broke can be worth nearly $80, I got this thing as a gift on Easter.

I want to kill myself right now.

What was it? Why tacky glue?
>>

Relax, anon. It's probably repairable. What broke?
>>
>>14126177
The Unicorn Gundam with a green psycho frame, maybe I just looked at an expensive listing. Tacky glue is the only glue I have, and I already put it on. I tested panel lining on this thing, I really should have waited before building this. Words cannot describe how disappointed I feel.

>>14126184
The part that goes into the hole broke off into the hole, I glued it on but I don't even know if it'll dry transparent.

You mean a peg? Relax, it's fixable.
>>
>>14126231
It was one of the smaller ones and it got stuck inside the plastic part. The glue worked, I just need to clean it up a bit.

Just extremely disappointed that I built this kit when I've only ever built 2 kits before, it's nub ridden, shitty panel lines, and looks like shit.

Mask it to hell and back, or try a reverse wash.

No no its not that their to small its that the light and how the camera picks it up is portraying it.

Im not even the best man, I still havent gotten it down and ive tried things outside of the box to make it work. Ive done some more advanced things when it comes to customizing but for me accuracy is still the worst thing. straight enough, round enough. is it aligned or even... I have two pipes Im gonna try priming and pray they work for mine but I went through a bit of plastic to get close.

If I wanted to hypothetically tighten up a loose plastic-plastic hinge joint would applying a dab of plastic cement on the inner hinge work?

Today I decided to try something new.

I'm trying to get a feel for this dry brushing thing.

I just wanted to give the shield a sort of worn look. Is it too much?
>>
>>14126529
Only the center seems like it's been over done, the sides look fine.

Just need to think what part of the shield is going to receive abuse outside of being completely destroyed

Dude, Relax.
Rome wasn't built in a day. If you're new to the hobby in general you're prolly gonna be shit at it to begin with. Just take your time and maybe start with just snap fitting and cleaning then move on to panel lining and see where it goes.

Dalong?

I don't really have a good reason, i just like thick lines?

also, i'm thinking of painting the sword blade the same red that i used for the details on the knees, chest, etc..
>>
>>14126992
Dalong is the model review resource the whole community uses. He's known for thick lines in order to show where there are lining opportunities on the model.
>>
>>14126992
dalong.net is a kit review site. Sample kits, when panel lined, are done so very strongly so as to better depict the detail - but for actual 'realism', you are meant to do panel lining subtly. as they aren't meant to be actual black division, but small indentations in the chassis plates (highlighted to add a sense of depth) and spots where dust/wear gathers.

Is sanding/wet sanding after painting a viable thing for polishing?

My coat came out a tad rough with speckle/grainy fuzzies. I'm assuming I'm fucked, but is there any way to salvage this?

where do people get their alligator clips for painting? are small metal clips ok on plastic parts? I thought there might be plastic clips, but I can't seem to find any locally.
>>
>>14127185
Tamiya cement should fix it. It basically melts the plastic to form a bond.
Maybe also put something, like this inside the hammer and the handle parts.

>>14127264
Everyone should have Tamiya cement, it's really helpful for getting rid of seam lines. Although most newer kits are pretty good about hiding them.

In the meantime, righteous indignation.

Other than the hammer shaft, the Gusion is built like a brick shithouse. I love it.
