SDF had no solid tone either. It wobbled between a serious military story including the genocide of Earth and a silly story snout alien invaders who don't know what kissing is. Oh, and a melodramatic one about a pilot caught between two love interests.

And it was better for it, cause it was by far the best of the bunch. The others are good, but SDF is the best.

I don't get how people don't just watch all the Macross works anyways. It's not a long-winding franchise with dozens of works like Gundam, it's literally three series (only one of which actually approaches 50 episodes), 1-3 movies and 2-4 OVAs' worth of material. There's not nearly enough material to warrant accusations of nostalgia pandering, that would be like accusing CCA of nostalgia pandering just because Amuro and Char are in it.

A running tone?

The impression I had was that the tone of the show changes according to what happens in the plot.
It starts off all nice and cheerful, then as the show goes on, people die, the colony gets more damaged, and the tone followed that, it becomes grim, less cheerful, the lighting of the places become darker than they were, etc.

The references are fanservice for the fans, you don't really need to get them to know the plot or anything.
Its like Australia missing a chunk of itself on maps in non-UC Gundam, its fanservice that doesn't actually affect the plot or anything.

You nostalgia pander based on the age of a work, which is 34 years in the case of SDF. Not on how many entries it has. Even then, while Macross may not be Gundam, 3 tv shows, a movie and 2 OVAs is more than most things get.

No, for obvious reasons.

I find that one of the distinctive properties of Macross shows is that Kawamori puts a lot of work into make the world and technology feel real with all its quirks and flaws (like the alien technology not working right in the SDF1, or the door to the bridge being built too small for the captain, and the civilian uses of advanced technology like the vending machine robots or the super advanced cell phones in the more recent shows).

It helps the setting feel like more than an excuse for robot fights, like a place that people actually live. It also builds up a kind of 'realism' credit with the viewer, so that later on when Kawamori wants to do something cool like having a spaceship surf its way into a planets atmosphere, it somehow isn't is immersion breaking as it should be.
