My first instinct is to say that TFs are Super. But really, it varies.

For me, the only definite way to distinguish between Real and Super is if attack names and such are shouted out. Under that interpretation, American TFs are Real, Japanese TFs are Super. This even goes for the G1 Cartoon -- Real in English, Super in Japanese.

The live-action movies TFs are as Real as TFs get. TF Galaxy Force is as Super as TFs get.

Honestly, though, I'd put living robots in their own category.

This distinction is arbitrary as shit.

Real/Super is a largely useless distinction when you look at all but the most extreme cases.

If the real question is "are they more military or more superheroes?", well, that depends on the show, and even on the episode. G1 and Prime are more military on average even with G1's ludicrous schemes of the week, Beast Wars trends more towards superheroes as it goes on, and in Animated they're outright saving the city from supervillains most of the time. Every Transformers show is a little different in what it considers acceptable.

Western TF writers seem to be fond of turning Star Saber into a not-so-nice guy. The Transmasters UK crew, in their stories, make Star Saber a Decepticon who has infiltrated the Autobots, taken over leadership, and corrupted them from within.
