Yeah, but it's subtle and doesn't wash out other sounds. You can barely hear Alpha's over the background music during the two scenes he's transformed so far and you can easily mistake Omega's for the soundtrack itself. It's not like they're shouting corny rhymes or singing.

The problem was he was wrong about Tsukasa Kadoya. A good few of the belts since Agito haven't had any jingles or singing. Like Kabuto for instance. Agito itself didn't either, so I've no idea why you're saying since then. Also, Heisei has always been toyetic. It started with Kuuga, and has gotten worse over time. Agito didn't start that. Kuuga had more forms, more weapons and more toys than Agito himself, which split those things between multiple characters. The show still still had lots of forms, weapons and potential toys though.

I liked how collectible-focused Riders from Decade to Drive handled the collectibles. It reminded me of Kabuto. Just the collectible name and the associated short music riff. None of the annoying phrase or rhyme Ghost does.

Just started Blade and damn I'm missing Drive already. Why did we have to have nonstop shaky camera crap like we don't know what a track and dolly is? That's not fair to either. Hobbit was filmed in 48, the double of a normal movie framerate, while Riders until Kabuto were filmed in 60 fields, so there's 60 half-frames. Yeah, Kabuto starts giving big signature characteristics to each Rider's style, like their designs had come out of a manga.

Making most Riders look very "standard" was probably one of the early Heisei's attempts to distance themselves from Showa, since the Showa Riders (aside from maybe Skyrider-ZX and the 90s movie ones) had signature dress styles, some of them designed by Ishinomori himself. Although they generally returned with more generic outfits in returning appearances.

Early video cameras had a very narrow dynamic range. That means dark areas will show up as black, and bright areas will be completely blown out. Film cameras have a wider range, but film is much more expensive to work with. The only cheap way around the problem is to make the lighting as flat as possible, which is what creates the signature "soap opera effect".

Modern Rider shows are shot on cameras with much better dynamic range, which means they can get away with more natural lighting.

I finally bothered to watch the Kabuto movie, decent for a KR movie I suppose. Something bothered me about it though.

I know that during Kabuto's production, a bunch of the actors/actresses couldn't be on-set for various reasons, which was why so many characters just disappeared for ages within the story. Hiyori's actress in particular was sick for most of production (dunno if that's why she quit acting altogether right after Kabuto or if it was some other reason)
with that in mind, the role they gave her in the movie feels like it was in really bad taste. All she does in the movie is show up and then die of illness. Did no one find that weird?

That does make me happy with how Ghost have been treating them. Either the Ganma just gets killed and it's a standalone episode or the plot continues despite its death like the Knife Ganma, or it comes back because they're all throwaway from the Ganma World or due to abilities like the Insect Ganma.

Gaim also did it well by never having the Inves be a prolonged threat that kept them around long enough since the antagonist role could be shared onto a Rider.

Those two have had their two parters be a lot more fluid like we often had it be ten years ago and that's refreshing.

Drive had some better action at this point, but I find the whole Ganma politics and conflicts genuinely interesting and I'm enjoying them much more than the cycle of Chase fights that were happening around this time period in Drive. Not that I think what Drive was doing was bad, just that I like Ghost's story in the second quarter more. Drive really picked up steam with the Freeze and Nira arcs in the middle of the show, so we'll see which story I like more in the end, but Ghost is definitely much more of a match for Drive than it used to be.

Honestly we're comparing 7/10, 8/10 shows nowadays. Everything we've gotten post-Decade except Wizard has been so much better than almost everything pre-Decade that it's unbelievable.

Nitou was an archaeologist (already more interesting than Haruto's lack of a background) researching ancient ruins when he found the belt. Presumably, these ruins were connected to the ancient magic-using society that the early narration mentions. Unlike Haruto's magic, his power was derived from the Chimera in the belt who required that Nitou feed him the mana of phantoms he defeated, else Beast becomes Chimera chow. I may be misremembering but I believe there was some mention of the belt's previous owner going down that path? In the Magic Land movie Nitou is still an archaeologist in an alternate magic-rich universe where everyone is wizards, who successfully recreates his driver by studying designs of ancient wizards. Apparently he figured out, in that universe, how to control Chimera fully and lived off the mana-grid in his mayo-shack, completely unaffected when all the regular wizards exploded. After the series he continues his work as an archaeologist, eventually capturing Chimera before the Gaim crossover. He does, however, end up back in the contract, and we'll never get to see him go on to master his belt and uncover the mysteries of ancient wizards.
