Macross Zero is a prequel about a test pilot being shot down on an island, and then weird things happen while the natives get mad at him.

Macross Frontier mostly focuses on a highschool student who becomes a pilot since he's sick of being pretty, and centers around a love triangle between the pretty pilot, a sentient pile of green goo trying to become an idol, and Space Britney Spears. During all this humanity fights bugs. Misunderstood bugs.

I was just thinking about this friend anon--you could probably trace Japan's social history, at least to a small extent, through the Macross series.

1st series: It was the 80s, so while we have the classic Macross elements of love triangles and pop songs, Minmei's music is pretty par for the course for what you'd hear on Japanese airwaves at the time, and in terms of the relationships, getting married and having kids is the ideal--Max doesn't knock Millia up until after the wedding, Hayase marries Misa, etc.

By the time Macross 7 comes out, divorce rates have begun to rise in Japan, IIRC (for reasons such as the economic problems we saw in the 90s). So we had stuff like Max and Millia's separation--as painful as it was to watch, a lot of Japanese kids watching the show at the time probably could have identified with Mylene.

And then in the 2000s, we had Frontier, which displayed the continuing loosening of mores concerning sex and marriage. We see couples knocking boots before marriage, and a gay character (the guy with the fro) is portrayed positively, even if he is camp.

It's very interesting, IMO. Some student of Japanese history or sociology could find a lot of material in mecha anime, if you ask me.

It being an SDF class would also make sense if there was no cannon seeing as how the spires on the back would be the cannon, and wouldn't work in cruiser mode. Also the SDF's were crazy modular, which would accommodate for the detachable arms.

Yeah, there was the PC Engine Komilia but thats about it I think. The funniest thing about "Dana Sterling" in Robotech, IMO, was that her hair was obviously a completely different color from Komilia's light green, but they still expected us to believe she was Max and Millia's daughter anyways.

In any case, it's only two episodes but I'm still loving Delta so far. The character designs aren't my favorite, but they're alright, IMO--not much better or worse than the designs for most shows in the 2010s/late 2000s. What's really winning me over is just how plain fun the series seems to be. Dumb anglerfish girl, goofy "aerial knights!" and fucking breakdancing mechs. Say what you will about the CG and animation, but every last frame of this show could have the same quality as the knife fight and I'd still have a big smile on my face.

Alien tech gives VF's super armor and stupidly powerful engines. Not anti gravity. Laws of nature haven't been changed - you need point of rotation, wing, and force working on a plane, usually tail stabilizers, to turn a plane. Leg nozzles allow for that under thrust, lots of it but aren't very efficient way of doing it at lower speeds. Modern fighter planes that use thrust vectoring still have enormous stabilizers on them - valks, especially VF-1, do not. Overtech or not, it's just plane wrong.
Thou one wonders why boomerang drones do have antigrav and Valks in Delta don't. Reactionless drive is usually the best drive..

As for what protoculture overtech meant for VF-, that's pretty much it - engines, some avionics, fold radar, Energy conversion armor so whole transformation and batroid form could actually work. VF-1 was very conservative design considering what came after Supernova program. Note please that even super prototypes of Plus come with both 3d thrust nozzles and lots of control surfaces.
