The shoujo was pretty good.

Anyway I feel like they're the kind of thing it's pretty hard to appreciate without nostalgia. Some of the Ramune shows had some great music though

Ryu Knight slowly goes to shit by ep 26-27, and it's awful by ep 40.

-NG is great, animation at first isn't all that good, but the characters end up being very entertaining through out.

Granzort- Haven't seen yet.

Wataru-The HK subs were awful, so I haven't seen it yet.

NG is great and probably one of my all-time favorite anime series. The sequels for the most part go progressively downhill unfortunately, though even then they still have their moments.

We still don't have the original show with English subs, so I don't expect that manga to be translated soon.

Fire and Fresh (localized named = "Knights of Ramune) are the ones that are fully subbed, not 40 (which is the original) but at least that has 15 episodes.

Generally, once the dragons show up it goes in a completely different direction and gets a lot less entertaining, and then there's a certain late-show arc that goes full retard. I think SOMETHING happened in production (there's four recap episodes, there shouldn't be that many if everything was going well, that's about as many as Destiny) but what exactly, no clue.

It's not completely terrible, but a bunch of problems start cropping up at that point, and they just keep building up until the end of the show.

You can still watch it, and I won't even say what those problem are because you'll start noticing them immediately.

Doesn't help that the head writer couldn't commit himself to fully killing off certain characters (as the final Vifam OVA showed). Still better than the second part of the OVA series, though. That got too weird, too fast.

What really nearly killed the show for me was a throwaway-scene later on that rendered pretty much the entire second half moot.
They keep hammering in how only the upgraded Ryus can defeat the Doomz but in that certain scene a bunch of no-name ninjas on foot are perfectly capable to destroy them - who the fuck needs Ryus? Just throw more ninjas at them!.

From what I've seen of fantasy mecha it seems like as if Wataru is the only one that doesn't shit itself in the second half but actually becomes better and better with each series and Chou managed to become one of my favorite mecha anime in general.

That's because Toyoo Ashida started out as a key animator on Dr. Slump, incidentally. As you said, he eventually developed his own style as years went by (mostly seen in F-Zero Falcon Densetsu and the very slowly subbed Gulliver Boy). It's a shame that most of the stuff he was involved in isn't subbed, otherwise it'd be easier to witness this evolution's progression.

I still think Shuuji Iuchi really stuck to his strengths/enjoyed working on the show, thus having the opportunity to refine his skills thanks to its popularity. Although it doesn't hurt that the other fantasy mech shows he worked on went downhill themselves (Yamato Takeru and Granzort) through no fault of his own, so that quota was met already (and luckily spared Wataru).

Plus just look at his resume: https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=3622. One of the earliest things he did was direct Shin Ace Wo Nerae episodes, to boot.

Anyway, speaking of fantasy mecha shows, isn't Hepoi apparently good all the way through as well? It's the only one to not have any subs to speak of so far.
