The original trilogy ( At least Alternative if you're not into the Slice of life genre ) is very much enjoyable, the same way I enjoyed Starship Troopers, which it's heavily based on. - Okay, Eurasia is overrun, but the bulk of humanity's manufacturing and research ability has been moved to Oceania and the Americas, which are pretty safe from the BETA. After all, technology has improved tremendously, and as humanity continues to advance a tactical and technological solution to the BETA is ever closer to being a reality.

Note that while the vast majority of humanity is committed to fighting against the BETA, at an individual level they still have their self-interest, their personal relationships, their history and their culture to deal with. The nations directly at the frontlines, the people that have already lost their homelands, and those that are relatively safe and hold manufacturing and research power (mainly the US and the CCCP towards the events of Alternative) all have different mindsets and concerns.

And, as the other guy mentioned, the fact is that no nation has waged war against another since the BETA arrived. Wishing for a billion humans to on top of that dissolve all cultural barriers and decades if not centuries of animosity is very unrealistic - hell, even within a single unified nation working towards the same goal you'll run into disagreements over whats the proper course of action.

You can't quash all dissension, there will always be a bunch of people who will disagree with your doctrine and bomb your HQ just because. Just within the Stasi, Ketchup Hairgel faction wants to use the Minsk divide to break off Soviet reliance and become a new force in the worldscape, thus ensuring that they have a say in ALL future matters at home and abroad (justified by future happenings such as the forcing of smaller nations into being bled dry at India in the 1990s) while Awoo Bitch faction wants to retain Soviet favor because they believe in sticking to Big Brother Commie and that the West will fuck them up. This is typical "my way is best way" and while it's easy to step back and say "can't one of you fuckers just give way" it's a lot harder to put it into action because just the road of a negotiation to a union is rife with potholes, to say nothing of fear of coming out under in the negotiations.

What's the alternative? Easy. Lop off the other group's heads and absorb their assorted resources for yourself. In fact, the environment in ML-UL/A lends itself further to this shit because when kekekes are less than a day's march from your capital and your "friends" have no intention of parley, you better believe that lopping off heads is a lot faster to deal with a festering boil than calling for negotiations or letting the other party end you first - or worse, dealing with a backstab while you're stuck dealing with the BETA up front. Imminent extinction is not exactly the most rational of moments for humans, a reactive "fight" response like internal dissent is more likely than a meetup to discuss terms of cooperation.

In TE, Belyayev, Sandek's scientist man, is reduced to a blabbering wreck when the psycho sisters system goes out of control and lets slip a line that he could have been sipping drinks on the tropical beaches in-between leisurely sessions of research, if he hadn't fucked up somewhere and ended up helping out at Evensk instead. Cuba should be somewhere out there; and South America getting somewhat taken in by Soviets diplomacy would also explain why the US has B-1B bomber flights clustered around the Mexico border.

Most socialist nations in a position to help would have been those around Europe (all defeated by 1983), since the need for TSFs ensured a supply demand of machines to the European Front first before anywhere else. No doubt some of them could have pledged material, but it's really all the extent of which they can do, considering that they've never been in a total war situation, probably haven't even gotten a sizable enough unit of TSFs to be able to afford an expeditionary unit, and I doubt that they have any pilot cadres that they could have sent that could have contributed in the same manner expected of NVA pilots.

Also the whole Ketchup/Awoo shitflinging at the end of SM. Even fellow Red nations would be split on whether to send help and charge it to Awoo, and get trapped by by Ketchup when he wins, or decide to support Ketchup, and wake up to a sudden infestation of Soviet "allied dispatch troops" swarming all over your tropical house of parliament irregardless of whether Awoo won or not.

They'd just get laughed off if they send troops to help the NVA; "I'm sorry, but the masters of the house are currently having a tussle over ownership, and the house dog is not a valid responder to your service call".

It doesn't do shit for Beatrix, Lise, or really anyone. Jurgen and Beatrix are literally the true love pairing of Schwarzesmarken. You know, just like Takeru/Sumika, Yuuya/Cryska, or Hibiki/Yuuzu. Jurgen was willing to topple the DDR to get Beatrix, just like Beatrix was willing to destroy herself in his memory. Jurgen was to be her knight in shining armor and whisk her away from her abusive father, the stasi, and Axmann. Unfortunately, he couldn't save her in the name of true love despite sacrificing everything.

They also oddly cut out her charisma. In the LNs, her men were willing to die for her and each other. Because the antagonist are so laughably evil that they treat even each other badly, it makes a couple of major plot points and character motivations nonsensical, like why Lise would stay loyal to the stasi (in the LN, she actually loved Beatrix like a sister).

More broadly speaking, it was Sumika's obsessive, desperate love for Takeru that gave the world a chance, as that's what caused the loop that over N iterations eventually gave the world a chance.

And even then, it was all because of Yuuko's genius and throwing away her feelings in favor of hard logic that enabled the miracle. She's never portrayed as being wrong in the heartless choices she makes, in the grand scheme. And in the end, Ouka turns out the way it does by everyone deceiving him, because the girls were all stronger than he was and didn't hesitate to do what had to be done.

That is true. I would say, though, that even though the girls deceived him, it was fundamentally a deception of self-sacrifice, and one borne out of love. Lying to someone because you have to do what's best for them, even if they're too bratty and obstinate to realize it, is different from lying to them in order to eventually betray them at the state's behest, which was what Beato and the Stasi did.

This is contrasted against Iris, who's way more German-centic, to the point where she calls the UN and the West her enemies when Katia brings them up. Not a bad stance to take (they were secretly backing Beatrix after all), but nationalism usually isn't portrayed as a good thing in ML.

The whole we must "create a state where inequality is enforced" is anime original. What is canonical is her perfect police state, but even then, it was just a means, not an ends. Beatrix was just playing a delaying game with the BETA anyways, and at the end of the day, the BETA are what matters to her. If she has to fuck over millions to put the rest in a better position to attack the BETA, than so be it. This was probably reinforced by her hatred of the DDR and her abusive father, Abel, (who was also a state official, go figure) that had been fucking her over since she was a baby and took away the only thing that made her happy, Jurgen (childhood friend romance and all, they even dated for over FIVE years). So setting off the powder keg that was the DDR was probably as much about a belief that this would help humanity in the long run as getting revenge on East Germany for destroying her life. You also need understand that Beatrix had suicidal tendencies from an early age (before she met Jurgen and Iris) so crashing everything (herself included) into the BETA was even more appealing.

The LN version is both better and worse. It's kinda weird. The anime version starts off doing a bunch of heinous shit that the LN version never did, but the LN version does shit later on like using heavily populated areas as cover to prevent Heim from bombing or artillery striking her men when she's outgunned or shooting 36mm shells at crowds of protesters to discourage them from attacking her base/the Berlin Wall.

Despite this, LN Beatrix is still more sympathetic (along with the Werewolves) just because she admits to feeling guilty about things with statements like calling herself dirty or stating her hands are drenched in blood. You get a sense of tragedy about her from the LNs despite all the terrible things she does. In fact, her intro in the prequel has this bit of foreshadowing:

I think it's more because she can't stand how oblivious and willing to betray their loved ones the East Germans are. There's a scene where she gets pissed off as fuck seeing some East Berliners carrying on and even daring to have a good time despite all the death and destruction going on. Jurgen was the love of Beatrix's life. An all around cool guy that was helping unfuck her head after an entire life being the daughter of her father, and an ace TSF pilot that helped define the proper way to utilize the machines.

He wasn't a rebel, but he butted heads with Axmann and, well, it ended with Iris having to kill him to save herself. That obviously did not go well with Beatrix, and also because Irisdina's method of carrying on Jurgen's ideals that working together was the only way to defeat the BETA was narrowminded as fuck.

(And eventually led to Master Theodor, who almost crushed a certain very important brain).

What was the issue with Irisdina though? Uniting Germany seems like it would be a good idea since the two nations would be able to pool their resources.

Beatrix's plan to establish an even crueler authoritarian hellhole where inequality between people is enforced (I'd assume by a caste system of sorts) is horrifying and doesn't really seem to address the problem of the BETA at all.

It literally falls less than two months after the epilogue with Katia and Theo on a train (the epilogue takes place three months after Iris's and Beatrix's deaths on the 28th of March). Some guy on /a/ did an analyses of SM's ending using TSFiA 39, Bake the Enemy, that showed that the BETA had already crushed East Germany and was attacking West Germany by the beginning of September 83.

Of course, a lot of Katiafags get upset at the above and thus try to state things like Beatrix's plans would never work or was pointlessly evil because the majority of Europe made it to England and Africa before the fall, but that's unlikely as even Hamburg hadn't been evacuated according to BtE.

From many of the comments I read over on anicobin and 2ch, they agree with Beatrix, and some even say that she was doing a much better of following Jurgen's philosophy than Iris was. It's notable that a poll conducted over on anicobin with 830 votes cast favor Beatrix 55 to 45 over Iris/Katia. Also notable is SM's author stating that Beatrix ideals or plans weren't wrong (he didn't say right though) when asked about her, but when asked about Katia, he stated something along the lines of SM being about what happens when adolescent ideals are thrust upon reality.

Alternative Takeru is a combination of all prior iterations - as such, the events that most commonly happen in then loop are fresher in his mind (ie training with the 207B, the cancellation of Alternative IV), while everything that happens during and after Operation Babylon is fuzzy as things diverge further from the initial starting point. You can probably strike being the only survivor of the Sadogashima operation and joining the IRG as a rare event, in this context.

But the one thing we know is that he almost always ends each loop by being killed while fighting BETA, hence his PTSD.
